This is a 12V battery checker circuit that uses 3 LEDs that light up at their respective voltages.
Here is a Simple LED Voltmeter to Monitor the charge level in Lead Acid Battery or Tubular battery.
Can anyone advise if it's possible to use these readings to manage my battery charging, i.e. Buy and fit a Smartgauge this is a little black box that translates dark art into numbers on a display. I am happy to install guages etc, but I'm pretty tied up for the next month or so, and therefore looking for an interim solution for the next couple of months. I'm off grid, cruising one day a week, so 6 days stationary, followed by a full day cruise.
A fair approximation to a charging regime is to run the engine for about an hour every day plus a six hour session at the weekend. If you have say 250w of solar then this will save you fuel and engine time in the summer, more will be needed to satisfy your needs in the winter.
But in the meantime, is there a way to use the 12V socket to inform my rev count, and charging time?
Using a 12 ciggy lighter socket somewhere on the boat will be fine, provided other loads are off. Looking at the 12V batt column, as long as the batt voltage recovers above 12.2V (aka 'resting voltage') you're doing OK. For batts in daily off grid use, a full charge at least weekly is best, which can take 6-8 hrs, sounds like you'll be doing that anyway. As NN says, a clamp meter is the easiest way to get a current reading without installing things. Worth getting at least a basic understanding of what's going on, can be very handy if problems arise in future. Indeed, many thanks for this thread - even though it has indeed been covered many times before - i just had one of those "lightbulb" moments as i never really GOT it before! You can certainly use a simple volt-meter plugged in wherever is convenient to optimise engine RPM for maximum charge rate even if the circuit is shared with active devices. Likely, your alternator will mostly charge your batteries at < its rated capacity but absorb all other loads up to its maximum current capacity.
If your voltmeter reads 14V+ by 8pm you are doing well but still need a long charge from your engine or better from shore power or PV to optimise the relative costs.

The main supply 230V or 110V is stepped down using a step down transformer, and then it is rectifiered and filtered out. That DC voltage is then fed to the voltage regulator IC 7815; the output will be regulated 15V.
12 volt rechargeable battery is connected at the output of voltage regulator and it charges when main power is available.
This circuit also indicates the charging status, that is the LED1 is glows when the battery is charged (Above 10.5V). When battery voltage goes below a particular value, LED1 stops glowing and the buzzer produces sound indicating that the battery has been discharged and it needs recharge.
Provide heat sink for regulator IC 7815 and it’s pin out is the same as that of IC 7805.
Am pretty new here and need some help on how to integrate a battery charging circuit to an inverter. Can you please tell me the exact value of pot so that Led glows at the level of >10Volts. For extra protection use a 10 ohm 20 watt resistor in series with the regulator output to limit the charging current. I am planning to use this circuit in monitoring a 48 VDC battery, can you kindly provide circuit modification. Infact 230-15 or simply 0-15 transformer will not work as the ic lm7815 works above 18 volt so u need 2 supply above 18 volt.
I am trying to find information on formulas used to calculate capacitance required for a given circuit.
The calculator give you the value of Time Constant, which is the time it takes for a capacitor to acquire 63% of the voltage beeing supplied to it, if its starts with zero volts. So with these in mind you can roughly calibrate the capacitance required by the loads in the circuit and knowing the time gap you would come across by the help of the capacitor. Anyhow, for simply analog circuits it is rarely needed to calculate the exact value of capacitance.
However, a 200Ah depleted lead acid battery or battery bank is about at 70% of its capacity. Anyhow, if your battery is not so depleted then charging it with 20A will make it bubbling and boiling. Anyway, the circuit is impressively clear and simplified, can be built with a few components anf for cheap. This IC takes input analog voltage and drives 10 LEDa€™s linearly according to the input analog voltage.
Connect D1 to D3 red LEDa€™s which indicates shut down stage of your battery and use D8-D10 green color LEDa€™s which indicates 80 to 100 percentage of the battery and use yellow color for remaining. Packaging should be the same as what is found in a retail store, unless the item is handmade or was packaged by the manufacturer in non-retail packaging, such as an unprinted box or plastic bag.
Contact the seller- opens in a new window or tab and request a shipping method to your location. Would this setup work: 3 zener diodes (at different breakdown voltages 10, 11 and 12 volts for example) with cathodes connected to positive so that when the battery was above their breakdown voltage an led could light up. When doing the long weekly charge, once the charge current tails off to a steady low level (aka 'tail current') the batts are fully charged.
Yes, you have to learn to interpret the readings when things are running but you'll soon get to grips with that. You can use this best battery charger circuit as car battery chargers, Inverter battery charger, Emergency light battery charger etc.

Please i want you to help me with a 24VDC to 230AVC inverter circuit schema integrated with battery charging circuit.
Than use more of the above circuit in parallel (probably without the LED and buzzer, as one low voltage warning circuit will be enough). So you will need 20 (!) pieces of this LM7815 based circuit to charge your battery as fast as it can be charged. So in reality you really don’t want to charge it constantly with 10% of its rated capacity.
With a 15V output transformer it probably produces some 13.5 Volts, which is hardly sufficient to effectively charge your 12V battery. 1 Amp is enough for a conditional charge of large (more than 30 Ah) capacity batteries, but will be way too low current for a depleted solar battery bank. So after you make DC from your 12V AC transformer, you would measure just about 10.8V DC output. In this circuit there is no need of resistors in series with leda€™s because current is regulated by the IC. If you reside in an EU member state besides UK, import VAT on this purchase is not recoverable. Approx 5% may suffer customs and postal delays at destination country and may take up to 3-4 weeks.
The 'rest voltage' with all loads disconnected for many (24) hours after charging or, maybe, twenty minutes after a major discharge may indicate the state of charge (SOC).
Plug a voltmeter in wherever you can see it from the the engine throttle position, increase revs, note maximum Voltage, reduce RPM to barely maintain that Voltage.
Same AC produced by the battery will be used to charge it up for a continious supply of Ac power. Also, data sheets gives you recommended values of capacitors to use with for example the LM78xx series. That is the voltage level of a very depleted 12V battery, so it is totally inappropriate as a charger. Measuring the battery voltage with a DVM anywhere on a circuit that has no other load will be the same as measuring at the battery terminals. If you have a tachometer note the reading, in future that rpm will be your optimal charge rate.
The main advantage of this indicator is that a buzzer informs us when the battery needs recharge. Connect a high value variable resistor in the place of resistor R2 and vary it till the D1 LED glows. But once the batteries are in absorption charge, their voltage will remain constant, determined by the alternator's regulator. Now disconnect the pot, measure the resistance across it and connect resistor of same value in place of R2. But at this stage they are far from fully charged and the only way to know when the are fully charge or nearly so, is to monitor the current going into them.
You cannot do this with a conventional meter but you can with a DC clamp meter such as the UNIT UT-203 available on ebay for around £30.
