How To Decode a VIN  Prior to understanding how VIN decoding works, it is important to know what it is all about. The Vehicle Identification (VIN) Plate is located at the right hand side of the underbonnet area (opposite side to the battery), it contains a series of number and codes that define each individual vehicle.
The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) comprises a series of letters and numbers representing, in code, the World Make Identifier, Marque, Model, Class, Body, Engine, Transmission, Steering, Model Change, Assembly Plant and Serial Number applicable to each individual vehicle (effective from November 1998). The number is stamped into the front face of the cylinder block, on the gearbox side (left side), below the top hose water outlet. The engine number comprises a series of letters and numbers presenting in code the cubic capacity, engine series and the ancillaries fitted. The transmission number comprises a series of letters and numbers presenting in code the number of gearbox speeds, gearbox ratio type, final drive ratio, speedo ratio. The VIN Plate (see Vehicle Identification Plate page) includes codes to accurately identify body paint colours. The VIN Plate (see Vehicle Identification Plate page) includes the Interior Trim Feature Code to accurately identify the colour ways used for the vehicle trim.
The Interior Trim Code governs the colour of seats, door casing inserts, steering wheel (leather only), handbrake and gear lever gaiter. The following information details the policy for replacement of Supplementary Restraint System (SRS) components; either as a result of a vehicle accident or as a result of vehicle age. Check for structural damage in the area of impact, paying particular attention to bumper armatures, longitudinals, crash cans and bracketry.
The replacement and inspection policy is dependent on the type and severity of the crash condition. The performance of the propellants within airbags and pre-tensioners will deteriorate over a period of time.
When a new vehicle is supplied the key number can be found stamped onto a tag attached to the key ring.

The primary VIN tag which includes the complete Vehicle Identification Number and two hidden VIN locations which include a partial VIN stamped into the bodies sheet metal. Here you will find a rectangular metal tag attached to the body by two rivets from underneath the dash panel. Both of these numbers are partial VIN numbers and should be an exact match with the VIN tag mounted to the door pillar.
The following VIN decoder was specially created for the Taurus Car Club of America and will only work for the Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable. It will be under the "TR" section on the lower right hand corner (1986-1997) or near the middle (1998-2006). The VIN number can be found on the VIN plate, stamped into the bodywork of the underbonnet area to the rear of the VIN plate and on a plate visible through the bottom left hand corner of the windscreen. The codes and colour names shown are related to those in the vehicle colour charts and the Rover Paint Refinishing Manual. When ordering replacement parts the interior trim colours should be specified using the codes and colour names given below.

Dampers can be identified by a colour code - painted on the damper body, they are not handed. The rivets themselves are generally not visible as they are covered by the dash pad when laying flat in place but if you examine (strongly recommended) the rivets from the bottom where the head is you will see that they are rosette rivets.
1986-1995 models will have a 5 letter code while 1996-2006 models will have a single letter code. The formal VIN started in 1981 since before that there were different formats used by different manufacturers.
MG Rover use the following suffixes to identify to identify specific and non-specific locks.
A rosette rivet is like a standard rivet but has six slots cut into the sides giving it more of a star or asterisk shape to it. To access these two VINs will require a little work first by removing the upper cowl panel and windshield wipers to clearly access the upper hidden VIN and for the second hidden VIN the heater blower motor needs to be removed which is very labor intensive requiring removal of the passenger side fender in most cases. The standardization of the numbers was done to get rid of chances of similar VIN’s appearing.
If your car or a car you are considering purchasing has two round top rivets holding the VIN tag in place installed from the top or the rivets when inspected from the bottom are round edged and not the rosette type you will want to exercise a little caution and check a few other aspects of the car prior to purchase. The digits that are found on car VIN indicate the year the vehicle was manufactured, assembly point, country of origin, model as well as other important details that will prove helpful in its identification.
This does not guarantee that there is any type of problem with your vehicles Vehicle Identification Number tag but it does indicate that at some point it may have been removed form the car for one reason or another. In this case you will want to make sure to inspect and verify the two hidden VINs stamped into the cars body to verify they match the last 8 digits of the metal VIN tag at the door pillar. The most worrisome of the reasons that people remove a tag for is what is known as a rebody where a car with a poor condition body but high value options such as a big block or Z28 has its VIN removed and attached to a lower value body that is in far better condition.
