When you’ve got arthritis, you may be willing to try just about anything to ease your joint pain.
For centuries, people have been traveling to famous mineral spas like Bath (in England) or Vichy (in France) to "take the waters" for their health.
Green-lipped mussels are found off the coast of New Zealand, and some believe that this type of shellfish may have anti-inflammatory properties that can help fight arthritis (based on the low incidence of this health condition among the coastal-dwelling native Maori population). Gin- or vodka-soaked raisins are a popular folk remedy for arthritis relief — they were even mentioned on the campaign trail by Teresa Heinz Kerry in 2004 while her husband, John, was running for president (she stipulated that the raisins must be white). Though cod liver oil is mentioned as an arthritis cure, it is no more effective than other fish oils that contain omega-3 fatty acids, which have been found to have anti-inflammatory effects. Several popular diets claim they can help arthritis sufferers, including the raw food diet, which focuses on uncooked, unprocessed foods like vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds. What this diet will do is help prevent illnesses such as heart disease, Alzheimer's and possibly cancer, and significantly ease the pain of chronic conditions such as arthritis.
In a review published recently in the British Journal Of Nutrition, Professor Philip Calder and his team at the University of Southampton looked at all the existing evidence for anti-inflammatory eating and suggested the approach might help a range of conditions.
Meanwhile, antioxidants in fruit and vegetables help curb the action of free radicals, which destroy healthy cells, exacerbating the damage at inflamed sites.

At the same time, you're meant to limit or cut out foods thought to cause inflammation, such as trans fats (artificially created fats) and saturated fats (found in red meat and dairy foods), processed foods and refined carbohydrates such as white bread and sugars.
Meanwhile, neurologists at the University of California are investigating whether a combination of omega-3 fatty acids and curcumin, an antioxidant found in turmeric, can be used to prevent Alzheimer's.
Diets too high in omega-6 fatty acids, found in fast foods, and low in omega-3 can cause the release of proteins that trigger inflammation.
The Arthritis Research Campaign says changes in diet cannot cure the condition, but there is 'strong evidence that eating more oily fish and fresh fruit and vegetables is likely to help if you have an inflammatory type of arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis. For most people, switching to these more healthy foods will result in weight loss, and this has benefits in itself because fat causes inflammatory chemicals to be released.
And when it comes to food cures for arthritis, the more outlandish, the better it seems, says Patience White, MD, chief public health officer of the Arthritis Foundation. But although one study published in the journal General Practice found lower levels of inflammation in patients with rheumatoid arthritis who drank a particular type of Scottish mineral water, there's really not much evidence that mineral water is any better for you than tap water.
Advocates of the vinegar cure usually point to the beta-carotene it contains as the wonder ingredient. Proponents of this arthritis treatment say that both raisins and the juniper berries used to flavor gin are thought to have anti-inflammatory properties.

It's touted as beneficial for a number of ills, including arthritis, but there is no scientific evidence to back this up. The Arthritis Foundation touts green tea for its inflammation-reducing powers, particularly for people with rheumatoid arthritis, citing a study showing that human cells treated with green tea were able to fight off changes from an inflammation-causing chemical. In a study, 60 percent of 125 people with back and neck pain who took 1,200 or 2,400 milligrams of the type of fatty acids in fish oil supplements cited improvement in arthritis pain, with 59 percent able to discontinue their prescription pain-relief medication. But while beta-carotene is indeed is an antioxidant, which helps protect the body from the byproducts of metabolism, there’s no scientific evidence that the beta-carotene in apple cider vinegar can target arthritis. But nutritional remedies for arthritis remain popular, with an estimated one in every five patients with osteoarthritis trying some form of alternative dietary treatment.
The raw food diet isn't right for everyone, though, and you may need to take supplements to avoid nutritional deficiencies, so check with your doctor before trying it.
If you're curious about food-based arthritis cures, here are some of the most popular and what the evidence says about them.
