Genital herpes is a highly contagious STD caused by herpes simplex virus 2 or, in some cases, herpes simplex virus 1. In other herpes vaccine news, on November 5, 2013, Agenus, a pharmaceutical company reported positive mid-stage finds in a clinical trial for another vaccine called HerpV.
On January 15, 2014, HealthDay News announced that they have come out with an experimental drug which could offer new treatment for those with genital herpes.
While there is still no cure for genital herpes, all of this research being done in herpes news gives patient with this disease hope that one day there will be.

Saint Louis University research findings published in the December issue of Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy report a family of molecules known as nucleotidyltransferase superfamily (NTS) enzyme inhibitors are promising candidates for new herpes virus treatments. The findings could lead to new treatment options for herpes that patients can use in conjunction with or instead of currently approved anti-viral medications like Acyclovir. Herpes simplex virus (HSV)encephalitis is thought to occur from direct transmission of the virus to the brain via the nerves that transmit one's sense of sight or facial motor functions like chewing or biting.
The study's authors note that more than half of all Americans are impacted by cold sores (HSV-1) and 20 percent suffer from genital herpes (HSV-2).

The research team at Saint Louis University investigated whether inhibitors of NTS enzymes would suppress replication of HSV-1 and HSV-2. Five of six NTS inhibitors of the HSVs also blocked replication of another herpes virus pathogen, human cytomegalovirus.
Researchers will also look at the evolution of the virus as it interacts with the inhibitors identified in the study. Current treatment of herpes infections relies primarily on nucleoside analog inhibitors of the viral DNA polymerase, according to the article.
Creating a successful vaccine against two members of the family, the sexually transmitted herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) and 2 (HSV-2), has proven to be challenging. Scientists have developed a novel treatment approach for persistent viral infections such as herpes.
Researchers working with mice believe there's hope for patients with a rare genetic disorder that turns their muscle into bone, in essence immobilizing them in an extra skeleton.
Anna Wald, a professor of medicine and laboratory medicine at the University of Washington’s School of Medicine and a professor of epidemiology in the School of Public Health has made herpes news. Herpes can be passed from mother to child during childbirth posing serious health risks to both the baby and the new mother.
Several newer agents are in clinical development, but none of them have been shown to fully suppress herpes infections.

She announced that there have been positive results for a therapeutic vaccine candidate to treat patients with genital herpes. They tested how much of the virus each of the patients were releasing 45 days before they were given 3 doses of the HerpV or the placebo.
For this reason, scientists and doctors are working on vaccines that reduce the contagiousness of the virus as well as reduce the frequency of herpes outbreaks.
These findings were also reported on January 16, 2014 in the New England Journal of Medicine. This medical trial enlisted 143 volunteers who suffer from moderate to severe genital herpes. This drug works in a different way as those that are already being used to treat genital herpes.
Now, she is taking her research to the next frontier, exploring the effects of deep space radiation on the reactivation of HSV.
