During the first meeting with a new patient, I inquire about their quality of life and peace of mind. Often patients share how they don’t feel like they have an extra minute in the day to devote to a restorative practice. As an integrative health practitioner, my intention is to guide my patients as they navigate through the maze of lifestyle choices.
When they leave the office, I want to make sure they at least have some baby steps in place so they can start leaning into a more peaceful life. In those initial conversations with patients, I pay particular attention to how they answer my questions. I’ve noticed a connection between the words patients speak and their thought patterns.
As I ask my patients to consider bringing mindfulness to their language throughout the day, they have often found it helpful to consciously choose to eliminate one or two specific words for a month.

Acquiring new habits is often the result of subtle shifts, and a shift in language is no different. Let’s look at the example of Annie*, a student who was worried about an upcoming test. When Annie actually went to the classroom to take the test, she noticed she was unusually relaxed. Mindfulness is one of the most effective ways to reduce stress, prevent it from accumulating, and cope with stress when it gets to be too much. By focusing on one thing at a time and paying attention in the present moment, you learn to experience your life more fully.
