If you are a business owner, you are frequently confronted with the issues of time management. Upfitting can be an involved process, but it can be broken down into seven factors to maximize productivity and benefit the company’s bottom line.
Shelving and drawer systems, partitions, ladder racks, spot mirrors, conduit carriers — these are just a few examples of upfits for cargo vans that can directly impact worker productivity. With a typical load, what equipment, tools, parts, and product is the van expected to haul daily? When working out of the van, what does the technician do most often at each stop throughout the day? Repetitive tasks also increase risk of muscle strain, injury, and lost productivity if the van isn’t upfitted with ergonomics in mind, Rose said. Ergonomics is also an important factor to consider when selecting ladder racks, said Jenn Voelker, marketing manager for Leggett & Platt Commercial Vehicle Products, an Atlanta-based firm that designs, manufactures, and installs commercial vehicle interior systems, truck equipment, and accessories.
This is especially a concern as new vans come to market with taller roof heights, such as the Nissan NV, Ford Transit, and Ram ProMaster, Rose said.
Will the van carry any delicate or fragile cargo that will need to be protected from damage? In terms of enhancing visibility, LED lighting systems are useful for technicians that work at night, Rose said. Steel, aluminum, or composite — what material is best for van shelving, drawers, and other upfits? In addition to weight-saving components, some fleets are turning to composite storage systems because of the material’s noise-reduction capabilities, said Voelker. Considering the maximum protection & make the van more user friendly van interiors shelving play an important role.
October 9, 2011 By Claire Leave a Comment Last week we featured a Winning Workspaces article on our Facebook page that shared tips for organizing your desk and office space. Two of the most common questions that potential and existing clients ask me are: ‘How do I organize my desk at work?’ and ‘How do I keep my desk organized?’.
In my recent piece in DesignIntelligence, BIM Beyond Boundaries, I argue for widening our outlook and reach as we deepen our skills. So often these thought pieces remain just that – saved in our hard drives or on our nightstands – but seldom put into use. And make some suggested next steps that you can take based on the prescriptions made in the article. What follows are some suggested resources, activities and links to use as action items as you build your breadth as well as depth. Consider joining  and participating in discussions on what it means to be an expert, among others, at the KA Connect LinkedIn group.
Give copies of the book to key colleagues and meet to discuss concepts and ideas with the intention of applying them to your organization.
Apply what you’ve learned via ideas from the book The New Social Learning: A Guide to Transforming Organizations Through Social Media. Many firms that have adopted and implemented BIM software solutions have not used the technology or process to their greatest advantage. If you – or your organization – have not already done so, make the commitment to take-on BIM’s higher uses in the next 6-12 months. Invite local experts who have used BIM for analysis, for sustainability, for fabrication to come to your office to give a demonstration. Follow-up by discussing how you can go about implementing this higher use of BIM on your next project. If you know of other sources – or have other suggestions or ideas of your own – please let us know by leaving a comment. Through an integrated project delivery method, owners, designers, and builders can move toward unified models and improved design, construction, and operations processes.

Organization comes right behind purging and it allows you to start your year off with a clean slate for your home and your mind. But, with a wide range of products and configurations to choose from, what should fleet managers consider when upfitting cargo vans? We really loved what this piece had to say and felt it was only fair to follow up with our perspective on office organization, so read on for a few WOW-approved tips and tricks.
At the Well-Organized Woman, we believe that an organized work space encourages a productive work day, so my answer to these queries is almost always the same — take the time to establish and stick to organizational routines and layouts for yourself and your space. When you arrive to the office the next day, you can sit right down and start the day’s tasks. Some productivity experts suggest waiting at least an hour after waking up to check emails. Everything returns to its place when you are done using it or at the end of the day when completing your office re-set. By exploring play, innovation, and the cultivation of the imagination as cornerstones of learning, the authors create a vision of learning for the future that is achievable, scalable and one that grows along with the technology that fosters it and the people who engage with it. What implications might this have in terms of how you focus your attention and time in the future?
To do so not only requires familiarizing yourself with these higher uses – but working more collaboratively with others on the team. Or better yet, request and invite and make a visit to their operations to see how they are utilizing the tools and work processes. When you’re working you like everything to be organized properly and everything to be in its designated place.
In 2011 let’s try and use organization as a tool to make our lives more productive, and easier to get around our homes. After accounting for all of the fleet’s needs for storage, a clearer insight will be gained into how to best organize those items for technicians to do their jobs more efficiently. If they’re carrying a fairly heavy ladder, we recommend a slide-down style ladder rack, which brings the ladder down the side of the van. In those cases, you want to be able to bring the ladder rack closer to the ground so that the person who is using the ladder doesn’t have to reach as high to load it back on the van. Spending a few extra minutes to organize your tasks and your desk before your day begins and as your day ends ensures that your time out of the office is spent on your personal life — the good stuff! It is focused on researching, analyzing, and reviewing technology products and services for the building industry. If you organize only for it to look pretty, or because it’s what everyone else is doing, you will not keep it throughout the year. Some drivers carried the tool belt inside the cab, some carried the belt along the side doors, and others by the back door. A mini re-set in your day can help you get your efforts back on track.Lastly, if these tips and tricks have your head spinning, start small and slow by adding one or two new behaviors every few days. For larger laundry rooms consider open shelving adjacent to the washer and dryer or cabinets.
