There is compelling evidence that dietary patterns that include processed foods and animal products, even in moderation, are the leading cause of modern diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer. A whole foods plant based (WFPB) diet is based on whole or minimally processed whole grains, legumes, vegetables and fruits. We share the views and follow the research of WFPB experts such as Dr Caldwell Esselstyn, Dr John McDougall, Dr Neal Barnard, Prof. The whole foods plant based community, mainly based in USA, has now reached a size and activity level that clearly demonstrates that a WFPB diet is both satisfying and sustainable.
The environmental impact of world livestock production makes it imperative that we urgently downsize this industry. The original Plantastic Life Introductory Class on Whole Food Plant-Based (WFPB) diets is now available free as a three-part video series. Our mission is listed here.  As this site evolves, we hope to be able to provide information, resources and services to help people who agree with this mission. We believe that achieving long term health and vitality is under the control of the individual, NOT the individual’s doctor.
Do You Need to Supplement With EPA and DHA If You Follow a Whole Food Plant-Based Lifestyle? A whole food plant based diet (WFPBD) is based on whole or minimally processed plants, primarily fruits, vegetables, whole grains, tubers, and legumes. The WFPBD (better if considered a lifestyle) has been found to have the best health outcomes based on observational studies such as those presented in “The China Study” by Dr.
To highlight this diet it will be helpful to discuss the common dietary types – Vegetarian, Vegan, Herbivore, and Carnivore – and contrast. ELIMINATE DAIRY: The production of milk is a marvelous biological event that is designed to allow the mammalian infant to survive and grow. While a plant-based meal would qualify as vegan, a person who follows a whole food plant-based diet (WFPBD) is not necessarily following a vegan lifestyle. You could live on French fries, white bread, Twizzlers, Oreos and soda and still be vegan, but you wouldn’t be plant-based or following a plant-based diet. Vegetarianism is the practice of abstaining from the consumption of meat – red meat, poultry, seafood and the flesh of any other animal; it may also include abstention from by-products of animal slaughter.

Like Vegans, Vegetarians choose eating restrictions for different reasons – not all nutritional.
Various mammals are omnivorous in the wild, including humans, chimpanzees, orangutans, and gorillas, pigs, badgers, bears, opossums, skunks, sloths, squirrels, raccoons, chipmunks, mice, and rats.
A carnivore is an organism that derives its energy and nutrient requirements from a diet consisting mainly or exclusively of animal tissue, whether through predation or scavenging. Again, the diet that helps homo sapien (humans) stay healthy and limit chronic disease is the whole food plant based diet with minimal to no animal protein (including chicken, turkey, fish, eggs, milk, beef, pork, fish) and even less – i.e. Vitamin D is not really a vitamin; a vitamin is a nutrient we have to consume because we don’t make it.
For anyone skeptical about moving to a whole-food, plant-based diet, keep in mind that everything our bodies need for optimal health and nutrition can be better obtained from plants than from animals. Add your email address and get amazing recipes, nutritional tips, and other goodies delivered right to your inbox! The evidence that plant based diets are health supporting is consistent across all types of research, particularly in regard to whole plant foods. It excludes animal-based foods, including fish and dairy, and also highly processed foods such as oils (that means no olive oil or coconut oil). Interest in WFPB is growing in Australia, with a strong support community and an increasing number of health professionals incorporating it into their practice. Adopting a WFPB diet is the most significant contribution individuals can make towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Learn what is really normal for blood cholesterol and understand the real-time effects of food on artery function. A whole foods plant-based diet, high in carbohydrate, can reduce the need for medications within weeks.
An emerging understanding of the importance of gut bacteria in maintaining good health leads us to consider that food intolerances may be the symptom rather than the disease. This approach also supports long term health, is free of side effects and boosts wellbeing. We provide links to evidence based information and practical advice for those wanting to follow a plant-based diet. Any diet program or fad diet (no matter how loony) works in the short term, but it is estimated that 95% of all people who attempt to lose weight fail to keep the weight off in the long term (5 years or longer).
By transitioning to a WFPB lifestyle, you will lose weight if you need to, and you’ll lose weight as you regain your health.
Natural, plant-based foods provide all the essential nutrients needed for a well-balanced and healthy diet, as there are no nutrients found in animal-based foods that are not abundantly available in plant foods (with the exception of vitamin B12). Once that individual can eat the food adults of that species eats the mother stops feeding and lactation (production of milk) ceases. You can be a plant-based vegan or a vegan who follows a plant-based diet (I know many people who do) — but not every person who is plant-based is a vegan and not every vegan follows a plant-based diet. Examples are cows, deer, elk, buffalo, horse, zebra, beaver, giraffe, rhinoceros, rabbit, etc. Omnivores often are opportunistic, general feeders which lack carnivore or herbivore specializations for acquiring or processing food, but which nevertheless consume both animal protein and vegetation.  Omnivores can also eat parts of plants, but generally only the fruits and vegetables produced by fruit-bearing plants. We simply don’t ever need to consume animal-based foods to get any of the good nutrition we need. It’s important to note that we need small amounts of cholesterol to help support our cell membranes and some of the tissues surrounding our nerves, but our bodies can manufacture all the cholesterol we need. Their belief is that we cannot possibly get all the protein we need from a plant-based diet. People on plant-based diets can sometimes have lower levels of these vitamins, but there are ways to increase these nutrients, and supplements are always an option.

I’ve also tested it widely on non-vegan peeps and they love it too so it makes a perfect side dish to bring to parties. The whole foods plant-based diet has a wide breadth of benefit, in that the same dietary approach that will prevent or even reverse one disease is beneficial to the management of others.
We use the term WFPB rather than vegan because a vegan diet can include processed foods and those choosing to eat a WFPB diet do not necessarily embrace the full vegan lifestyle. Although we share the environmental, ethical and world food supply concerns of others, the focus of this website is health and wellbeing through improved nutrition.
We hope that the videos, in addition to the blog articles and other resources on this site, will help to persuade you to consider transitioning to a WFPB lifestyle.
You should not use this information to diagnose or treat any health problems or illnesses without consulting your pediatrician or family doctor. American’s protein consumption is approximately 30-35% (of total calories consumed) and only need 6-8%.
Even products that come from insects such as honey and beeswax are generally not considered vegan or suitable for vegans.  This is a politics and personal belief and not based on nutrition measures alone.
Such ethical motivations have been codified under various religious beliefs, along with animal rights.
Omnivores also consume both animal and non-animal food, and apart from the more general definition, there is no clearly defined ratio of plant to animal material that would distinguish a facultative carnivore from an omnivore.
Plant-based foods also contain dietary fiber and beta-carotene, where animal products do not. The truth is I get all the protein I need from beans, nuts, seeds, legumes, and whole grains like oats and quinoa. For those of us living in northern climates, especially in the winter months, a supplement will do the trick.
In animals, the microorganisms producing the B12 reside in the large intestine, or in the case of ruminants (cows, sheep, goats), the rumen (first stomach chamber). You have a much greater chance to maintain weight loss if you feel great once the weight comes off.
Once convinced, we hope this site will inspire you to begin a WFPB journey that will lead you to abundant and exuberant health!
Other motivations for vegetarianism are health-related, political, environmental, cultural, aesthetic or economic.
The protein level of nuts and seeds is actually quite high compared to animal-based proteins. Plants can be a good source of B12; they must be grown in organic soil where there are lots of microorganisms to produce the B12.
When it comes to food, “Plant-based” refers to whole foods — beans, grains, fruits and vegetables, not processed foods that were once whole foods. There are varieties of the diet as well: an ovo-vegetarian diet includes eggs but not dairy products, a lacto-vegetarian diet includes dairy products but not eggs, and an ovo-lacto vegetarian diet includes both eggs and dairy products.
Nuts and seeds do contain high levels of fat as well, but the fat in nuts and seeds is distinctly different and more healthful than animal-based sources.
In the days before the wide-spread use of pesticides, when we didn’t have to be so meticulous about cleaning our food, having a little soil attached to the plants grown in organic soil always gave us enough B12. As the profits for the powerful American food companies rise there is a direct correlation to the medical expenses our country is spending on disease (not to mention the loss of the local farmers).
