Natural, plant-based foods provide all the essential nutrients needed for a well-balanced and healthy diet, as there are no nutrients found in animal-based foods that are not abundantly available in plant foods (with the exception of vitamin B12). Once that individual can eat the food adults of that species eats the mother stops feeding and lactation (production of milk) ceases. You can be a plant-based vegan or a vegan who follows a plant-based diet (I know many people who do) — but not every person who is plant-based is a vegan and not every vegan follows a plant-based diet. Examples are cows, deer, elk, buffalo, horse, zebra, beaver, giraffe, rhinoceros, rabbit, etc. Omnivores often are opportunistic, general feeders which lack carnivore or herbivore specializations for acquiring or processing food, but which nevertheless consume both animal protein and vegetation.  Omnivores can also eat parts of plants, but generally only the fruits and vegetables produced by fruit-bearing plants. We simply don’t ever need to consume animal-based foods to get any of the good nutrition we need. It’s important to note that we need small amounts of cholesterol to help support our cell membranes and some of the tissues surrounding our nerves, but our bodies can manufacture all the cholesterol we need. Their belief is that we cannot possibly get all the protein we need from a plant-based diet. People on plant-based diets can sometimes have lower levels of these vitamins, but there are ways to increase these nutrients, and supplements are always an option.


I’ve also tested it widely on non-vegan peeps and they love it too so it makes a perfect side dish to bring to parties. The whole foods plant-based diet has a wide breadth of benefit, in that the same dietary approach that will prevent or even reverse one disease is beneficial to the management of others.
We use the term WFPB rather than vegan because a vegan diet can include processed foods and those choosing to eat a WFPB diet do not necessarily embrace the full vegan lifestyle. Although we share the environmental, ethical and world food supply concerns of others, the focus of this website is health and wellbeing through improved nutrition.

For those of us living in northern climates, especially in the winter months, a supplement will do the trick.
In animals, the microorganisms producing the B12 reside in the large intestine, or in the case of ruminants (cows, sheep, goats), the rumen (first stomach chamber). You have a much greater chance to maintain weight loss if you feel great once the weight comes off.

Other motivations for vegetarianism are health-related, political, environmental, cultural, aesthetic or economic.
The protein level of nuts and seeds is actually quite high compared to animal-based proteins. Plants can be a good source of B12; they must be grown in organic soil where there are lots of microorganisms to produce the B12.
When it comes to food, “Plant-based” refers to whole foods — beans, grains, fruits and vegetables, not processed foods that were once whole foods. There are varieties of the diet as well: an ovo-vegetarian diet includes eggs but not dairy products, a lacto-vegetarian diet includes dairy products but not eggs, and an ovo-lacto vegetarian diet includes both eggs and dairy products.
Nuts and seeds do contain high levels of fat as well, but the fat in nuts and seeds is distinctly different and more healthful than animal-based sources.
In the days before the wide-spread use of pesticides, when we didn’t have to be so meticulous about cleaning our food, having a little soil attached to the plants grown in organic soil always gave us enough B12. As the profits for the powerful American food companies rise there is a direct correlation to the medical expenses our country is spending on disease (not to mention the loss of the local farmers).
