Scientists have conducted a large study which suggests that taking a certain vitamin could lower the risk of developing the most common types of skin cancer. The study was done in Australia and researchers discovered that people who took a certain type of vitamin B3 for about a year were 23% less likely to develop new skin cancers, compared to the patients who were given placebo pills. This means that those who took vitamin B3 developed less than two of these types of cancers on an average, compared to 2.4 cancers developed of the ones who took the dummy pills. Although the study did not reveal anything about the effects of vitamin B3 on the deadliest type of skin cancer, melanoma, it did however show the effects of this vitamin of other, less dangerous forms of skin cancer, such as squamous and basal cell cancers. According to recent statistics, there are more than 3 million Americans diagnosed with these forms of skin cancer every year. Treating these skin conditions are often expensive and can be removed only through surgery, radiation of freezing off the spots.
Schilsky and his team of scientists said that this type of vitamin B3, called nicotinamide, could be an affordable way to lower the risk of some forms of skin cancers. However, because of the fact that Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer, higher than the US or any other parts of the world, researchers said that they need to run further tests to determine if they could recommend vitamin B3 as a treatment against skin cancer. According to the experts, vitamins have proved to be elusive in cancer prevention, and there are studies that some vitamins can actually do more harm than good.
Scientists are also stressing the fact that people who have not yet had any of the skin cancers they should not use these vitamins.

Mario Fabri, who currently works in the Department of Dermatology at the University of Cologne in Germany, examined the effects of vitamin D on immunity during his time at the University of California, Los Angeles. Fabri’s previous studies also found that vitamin D is necessary for the immune system to produce cathelicidin, an antimicrobial peptide that, like interferons, provides humans and other mammals with protection against bacterial infections.
Richard Schilsky, a cancer specialist at the American Society of Clinical Oncology and one of the researcher involved in the new study, explained that these are the most common skin cancers that people develop. Schilsky said that although rarely fatal, these types of cancers can be very persisting and recurring.
Diona Damian, a dermatology expert at Dermatology University of Sydney in Australia and one of the lead authors of the study, said that for the time being, this is not something for the general population to try. Researchers found that, in the presence of even minimally adequate levels of vitamin D, the body’s own immune system will naturally trigger an immune response against the disease and many others without the need for drug or chemical interventions.
He discovered that the vitamin D hormone is crucial for T-cells, which are the first responders to immune invaders, producing a protein called interferon. In other words, vitamin D equips the body with the tools it needs to prevent infection without the need for drug-based antibiotics.
