In San Francisco you could eat at a different vegan restaurant every night for weeks before exhausting them all. Greens is not only our favourite vegetarian restaurant in San Francisco, it’s our favourite vegetarian restaurant anywhere in the world. Then there’s the food—the dishes are fairly simple, allowing the quality of the seasonal ingredients to shine through. Greens is an expensive, special occasion place (mains are around $23) but it’s worth every penny. Another special occasion place is gourmet vegan restaurant Millennium, by far the best vegan restaurant we’ve ever been to. The wilted spinach and frisee salad with smoked tofu, roasted new potatoes, spring onions, olives, almonds, and sangiovese vinaigrette was amazing—substantial and very flavourful. Millennium are famous for their desserts, which leave you amazed that they’ve been made without dairy. Like Greens, Millennium is pricey (mains are around $24) but they have a Sunday to Wednesday Frugal Foodie Menu which is a good deal at $42 for three courses with wine pairing for an extra $13. What did tempt us back to Mexican was Gracias Madre, an entirely vegan, organic Mexican restaurant that gave us the opportunity to try dishes we couldn’t find meat-free south of the border.
Gracias Madre is pricey for a Mexican restaurant (starters $7-9, mains $13-16) but the portions are huge. We had the vegetable tofu curry soup with soba noodles ($11), agadashi tofu, and some sushi rolls. There are also plenty of cheap Indian restaurants in the Tenderloin which all have vegetarian options (we liked Lahore Karahi and heard good things about Chutney). Thai Idea is a small vegetarian Thai restaurant that is surprisingly stylish considering its location in the sketchy Tenderloin neighbourhood. At around $10 a dish it’s not the cheapest cafe type place but the quality is high and it’s cheaper than eating in a restaurant.
There are lots of Ethiopian restaurants in the Bay Area and they are all vegetarian friendly.
Like most Ethiopian restaurants this informal modern cafe offers a veggie sampler—at $15 it was more than enough for the two of us.
We tried three veggie burgers in San Francisco including Plant and Umami Burger, and we enjoyed them all but Roam was our favourite.
Roam Artisan Burgers is located at 1785 Union Street in the Marina and they have another branch at 1923 Fillmore Street in Lower Pacific Heights. Saigon Sandwiches is a tiny hole in the wall takeaway joint in the Tenderloin with a small menu of banh mi, Vietnamese sandwiches, including a tofu option. Another cheap Vietnamese place in the Tenderloin, Pho 2000 is as you’d expect is a great place to go for rice noodle soup.
We also ate a Mexican Indian fusion burrito from Curry Up Now, a hearty combo of rice, chickpeas, vegan samosa, chutneys and pico de gallo. Ferry Building – Go on Tuesdays, Thursdays or Saturday mornings for the farmer’s market or any day to visit the gourmet shops like Cowgirl Creamery cheeses. Betelnut – This Asian fusion restaurant in the Marina is based on Asian side street beer houses, or pejiu wu that serve fresh “street food”.
Split Pea Seduction – This popular takeaway lunch place downtown has a daily changing menu which always features at least one vegetarian soup, salad, sandwich and crostata (pastry). The rest of the Bay Area is just as vegetarian friendly as San Francisco and we found some good options just a short BART ride away. Encuentro, Oakland – A vegetarian wine bar that offers a creative selection of small plates from local, organic ingredients.
Cheeseboard Pizza Collective, Berkeley – A popular, casual pizza place that offers one pizza that’s always vegetarian and changes each day. Cinnaholic, Berkeley – For a decadent vegan treat head here for cinnamon rolls like you’ve never tasted before. As you can see there are a huge amount of vegetarian and vegan tasty eats in San Francisco and the Bay Area. El Ameyal RestaurantThe onsite restaurant at El Ameyal Hotel and Wellness Center is a mecca for visiting vegetarians. Cabo San Lucas chefs have increasingly emphasized fresh, local and organic ingredients in recent years, and this trend towards healthy and sustainable food has translated to an increase in vegan, vegetarian and gluten free dishes at area restaurants.
El Ameyal Hotel & Wellness Center's onsite restaurant, also called El Ameyal, is the shining light for visiting vegetarians, so much so that it even customizes menu offerings to suit specific diets. Located on the boardwalk with views over Santa Eularia beach, this has been voted the best veggie cafe in town on numerous occasions. A favourite with the arty-types and musicians on the island, Out of Time People – situated in Ibiza Town – serves up some of the best vegetarian and vegan fare.
A few blocks away from San Antonio’s picturesque harbour lies middle-eastern-inspired Menjabe. TweetFor such a small town San Pancho has a surprising number of excellent restaurants, many of which are vegetarian friendly, ranging from simple taco stands to gourmet bistros.
Although we didn’t try every restaurant in town we did make it to most of them and the ones listed here are our favourites, ordered roughly from cheapest to most expensive with some sweet treats at the end. Eva’s is similar to Delfines but I prefer it as there is an option of a mushroom, onion and cheese quesadilla, they serve them with grilled onions on the side, and the salad bar is just as diverse. It’s really hard to find a vegetarian taco in Mexico but Baja Taqueria has a delicious veggie taco stuffed with grilled vegetables sauteed in garlic with melted cheese and topped with cabbage, tomato and their tasty salsas. The only 100% vegetarian (actually vegan) restaurant is inside the Entre Amigos community centre. Darjeeling is a cool laid-back place with friendly staff and an interesting mix of gourmet teas, delicious wood oven pizzas, and the best live music in town (go on Friday nights to see Dos Bertos y Las Musas). We went here occasionally for lunch to satisfy our sandwich craving with the vegetarian baguette with fries, or the pretty decent nachos. Our favourite restaurant in town is a gourmet organic restaurant inside the boutique hotel Cielo Rojo.
Everything we ate here was wonderful including the freshly made rosemary bread with olive oil that came before our meal, the unusual hibiscus flower sopes, the goats cheese and spinach salad, and the amazing berry cake.
La Patrona is the fancy polo club where you can enjoy a meal while watching the action on the field.
Cafe Paraiso is the only coffee shop in town but luckily it’s a good one with an extensive menu including Simon’s favourite mocha frappuccino and some delicious homemade cupcakes (try the coconut), banana bread, and brownies.
The “French place” only opened in April 2013 and doesn’t have a sign so we can’t remember the name. There are a few places that Victoria at Bridges and Balloons writes about in her reasons to love San Pancho post that we didn’t manage to make it to before they closed for the low season including Casa Emilia for breakfast and Cafe Manana for cakes and coffee.

I love your food recommendations, and we’ve used several of them in South America, but reading them when I can’t get that kind of food is just torture!

This farm-to-table pioneer almost singlehandedly exploded the alfalfa sprouts-and-tofu stereotype of vegetarian cooking more than 30 years ago. Many of the complaints about vegan cooking revolve around limited options or dishes that try to mimic (often unsuccessfully) chicken or beef. Hefty portions of spicy, flavorful and inexpensive South Indian food make this Mission District staple one of the most popular vegetarian restaurants in the city. White tablecloths, fishnet chandeliers made from recycled paper bags, faux-lizard leather booths, and a zinc-topped bar set the tone for the city’s most elegant fine-dining vegan restaurant, located in the heart of the theater district.
Mexican and vegan seem like an unlikely pairing, but Gracias Madre has not only married these ideas, it’s done so with spectacular success.
I’ve said that previously about Chiang Mai in Thailand which certainly is an excellent budget option, but on our third visit to San Francisco in July we were reminded what a gourmet heaven it is. You can find vegetarian restaurants that specialise in Thai, Mexican, and Japanese, as well as some of the best gourmet vegetarian restaurants in the world.
First, there’s the location—a large, bright space overlooking the boats and seals in the Marina and the Golden Gate Bridge just beyond. The salads in San Francisco are the best we’ve had in the world, and Greens is no exception—on our latest visit we started with a wilted spinach salad with creamy goats cheese, beets and walnuts, along with moist yellow finn potato griddle cakes. The staff are unpretentious but know their stuff, and are happy to help you navigate the menu and wine list. You don’t find this level of quality in many vegetarian restaurants around the world so we always take advantage when we can.
We had their signature Chocolate Almond Midnight, a decadent triple layer of almond cashew crust, mocha chocolate filling, and white chocolate mousse, served with raspberry sauce.
In the past we’ve enjoyed the not very authentic but delicious giant burritos at places like Papalote. It’s a small, simple place with an extensive menu, and it’s great not having to worry about fish broth or any other hidden ingredients.
It was all good and healthy, but as portions are huge we couldn’t order as much variety as we would have liked. The rice and lentil pancakes were huge and tasty with lots of different fillings on offer but I still think the classic masala dosa (with spiced potato, $8.50) can’t be beaten. We had pad thai and massaman curry, and both were packed full of vegetables and tofu, and beautifully presented.
Their menu is not entirely vegetarian but there are plenty of vegetarian and vegan options, and everything is organic and uses fresh, local produce.
They have a number of other locations including Terminal 2 at the airport (it’s the only time we have ever enjoyed a meal at an airport). We heard the best were in Oakland but we ran out of time and went to Moya in SOMA instead, and were really happy with our first Ethiopian restaurant experience. Four stews and two salads are served family style on a large injera, the spongy, slightly sour Ethiopian flatbread. They use sustainable meats for their burgers and also offer an organic house made veggie burger. Fries are $2.99, and they have artisan house made sodas in interesting flavours like seasonal blackberry and caramelised pineapple. The tofu is fried in a tasty sauce and served with shredded carrot, onion, coriander, and chiles on crispy French bread—delicious!
30 trucks offer a huge variety of gourmet eats including Japanese, Vietnamese, Filipino, Malay, Nepali, Mexican, Korean, and more. Old World Food Truck makes European Jewish soul food and we enjoyed their cheese and potato pierogi, small soft dumplings topped with caraway sour cream, pepper relish, and fried onion. It has a small vegan menu (ask for it) and they are also happy to adapt other items on the menu for you. They only have one vegetarian burger but the Earth burger made from mushrooms and edamame and topped with truffled ricotta, cipollini onions and slow roasted tomatoes was really good.
We had the delicious fresh corn, onion, zucchini, feta, and mozzarella with garlic olive oil, cilantro, and a wedge of lime. It’s a pleasure to spend time in a city where vegetarian food is both easily found and taken to the next level, and where local, organic, sustainable and artisanal are words used to describe almost everything we ate. The cliffside El Farallon is well-regarded for its stunning views and market-style seafood, while the resort's signature restaurant Don Manuel's boasts old-world hacienda style atmosphere, and a large open kitchen that dishes out superb Mexican accented cuisine.
Penny Lane specializes in healthy, hearty and delicious organic fare, from fresh squeezed juices (try the hangover healer, with parsley, watercress, broccoli, and pineapple) and coffee to freshly baked breads and pastries, and country style omelets. Formerly called Tutto Bene, this is the premier local stop for vegetarians and health-conscious visitors to Los Cabos, and, with plenty of wines in stock, it's also a popular stop for oenophiles. The restaurant is set next to a 10-acre organic field at Flora Farm, and you can almost reach out and touch the food you'll soon be eating.
Baja Med style fusion dishes are the keystones of Chef Fabrice Guisset's menu, which is designed to show off the region's unique culinary style.
Menu standouts at the organic farm's restaurant include a ceviche trilogy, roasted tomato soup and baked eggplant rolls, as well as entree highlights like free range Cornish hen and pork shank with green mole.
Not only is it a meat and fish free environment, but the restaurant will tailor offerings to specific dietary needs, including special diets for those dealing with hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, and diabetes, and special dishes for lacto vegetarians, lacto ovo vegetarians, vegans,and raw food adepts. Although there are still relatively few completely vegetarian eateries in Los Cabos, virtually all the restaurants at major resorts showcase some vegetarian options, and many offer separate vegetarian menus. Vegans and raw foodies, for example, will feel welcome at El Ameyal, as will lacto and lacto ovo vegetarians.
Organic markets are open each week in both Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, and local organic farms like Huerta Los Tamarindos and Flora Farms are home to excellent onsite restaurants.
By day, it has a boho-cafe vibe, with a menu based on organic ingredients and innovative flavour combinations – with a slight lean towards North African and Asian cuisine. With a slightly more upmarket feel, it serves fresh, healthy organic food, with many raw food options for those wanting to detox. Their gazpacho is a must-try, perfect on a hot summer’s day, as are their homemade quiches and quinoa salads. As well as freshly-squeezed juices and smoothies, they make a great veggie burger, lasagne, pita wraps and samosas.
The range of veggie street food isn’t as diverse as in big cities like Mexico City and is usually limited to cheese quesadillas, so to avoid boredom vegetarians need to spend a bit more on some of the other restaurants in town, or cook for themselves.
Many restaurants close in San Pancho during the May to October low season, or keep sporadic hours—we had to be flexible and not have our hearts set on eating at a particular place as chances are it could be closed. There are a few things on the menu like breakfasts, juices, burgers, and a tasty vegan Spanish tortilla but they also have a 50 pesos ($3.70) set lunch that changes each day.
The portions come in huge bowls, enough to serve two so at around 100 pesos ($7.40) a dish it is pretty good value when shared. There are lots of veggie pizzas but our favourite was the San Pancho with four cheeses and rocket (arugala). Portions are massive so although 60-80 pesos ($4.50-6) a dish seems a bit expensive they are big enough to share.
The fresh pastas are delicious and we loved the caprese panini, although it is inconsistent—it was made and presented differently the second time we went there but we still liked it. There are only two mains for vegetarians (pasta and lasagna) but the salads are half the price and was enough for me with dessert. It’s down near the beach which is the perfect location to pick up one of their excellent gelatos (the coconut is so good). This business might not have an official storefront, or it might move to multiple locations throughout the day. This fusion restaurant of mostly Chinese food along with Indian and Malay food has become a convenience to a lot of people. The growing ranks of superb vegetarian restaurants across the country means you need never settle for a steamed-vegetable platter again. If you widen the net to vegetarian-friendly restaurants it’d take you years to sample all the excellent meat-free food that the city has to offer. We always book a window seat at sunset and although this July it was too foggy, on a clear day the sunset is spectacular.


For mains we had fire roasted poblano chill stuffed with quinoa, white corn, grilled onions, goats cheese and fresh tomato salsa, and farro risotto oozing with vegetables and grana padano cheese. When they heard it was our anniversary they even brought us a complimentary glass of sparkling rose.
Our favourite main was the arborio and pistachio crusted eggplant napoleon—a tomato and leek tagine with roasted eggplant, zucchini, butter beans, artichoke, and tofu-sage cheese, Israeli couscous, cardamom-chile zhug, and radiccio and frisee salad. On this visit, after seven months in Mexico we didn’t really feel like eating more Mexican food. We loved the pozole, a traditional hominy stew with a nicely spicy red ancho chile broth, tortilla strips and avocado, which we’d never been able to try in Mexico. I wish they offered set meals like they did at vegetarian restaurants in Japan for a fully balanced shojin ryori meal. Their choice of unusual toppings sets them apart and there are plenty of vegetarian combos or you can create your own. It’s very popular so get there early (it starts at 5pm) as queues are often long and it can get chilly down by the waterfront. We had a steamed gua bao with crispy miso cured tofu, baby choy sum (a leafy green), and garlic-tofu mayo served on a soft fluffy bun.
The service was great and everything we ate was tasty and creative, not your usual Chinese. It was expensive though at $12 without fries or salad and we found the sweet potato fries too sweet. We had a grilled aubergine and goats cheese sandwich with salsa verde, mint, and capers, and a squash bread pudding panzanella salad. If you are a vegetarian we’d definitely recommend you visit, but take a fat wallet as although you can find cheap eats some of the best places are worth the splurge.
Not 100% vegetarian but the chef there Sean Baker is obsessed with veggies and veritable cookery. Rico Suave is open for breakfast and lunch, and offer a full menu of healthy, non-alcoholic pick-me-ups, which like the tortas, boast colorful or regionally distinctive names. Fresh breads, egg-based dishes, salads and paninis highlight the breakfast and lunch menu, while dinner delights include antipasti, gourmet pizzas, mix and match croquettes, soups, pastas, custom cutting board options and decadent desserts. Many specialties are made tableside, including handmade tortillas, guacamoles, ceviches and moles.
Don Manuel's is a fine dining establishment of deserved repute, yet they favor a more comfortable and relaxed approach than most restaurants of the same quality, with a gracious and welcoming staff adding to the charming, old-fashioned ambiance.
For late risers, lunchtime offerings include salads, pastas, wraps, traditional Mexican dishes, and a signature hamburger grilled with blue cheese. There are an array of gourmet cheeses, deli items, cereals, pastas, organic snacks, mineral waters, and the best selection of Mexican vanilla anywhere in Los Cabos. Ingredients are primarily sourced from local organic farms and the resort's own herb garden, and The Restaurant's extensive wine list shows off top producers from the peninsula's premier wine growing region, Valle de Guadalupe.
El Ameyal also offers courses in cooking healthy, and nutritional treatments offered in conjunction with spa therapies, including foods intended to detoxify, energize and nourish. The hotel also offers vegetarian cooking classes, as well as special nutritional treatments in conjunction with some of the spa’s holistic healing treatments.
They make all their pasta by hand, and their falafels are said to be the best on the island. Tucked away slightly off the beaten track, around the corner from the bustling Plaza del Parque, it can be hard to find, but is well-worth seeking out. Their menu is a welcome change from the heavy food served at many restaurants in San Antonio, and they are particularly well-known for their homemade hummus and falafels.
Most restaurants are on the main street Avenida Tercer Mundo, or just off it—everywhere in San Pancho is easily walkable.
At 27 pesos ($2) per taco it’s more expensive than the first two options but the quality is higher and the restaurant is a bit more upmarket (i.e the chairs aren’t plastic!).
We had pasta with pesto and although I enjoyed it and it satisfied my pesto craving it tasted like jarred pesto and wasn’t anything special.
Full meals here are expensive—we spent about $50 on a blow out three course meal with cocktails—but breakfasts are more affordable (around 80 pesos ($6) a dish) and just as delicious.
Meals aren’t very veggie friendly and although they do have crepes they had always run out when we went there. The most amazing pina colada ever can be found at the end of main street on the beach *place with blue shirts and blue stand alone washroom) (their food is not so great though) And Sam, the Canadian owner of the Santa Madre Surf Shop is an awesome guy and can book you some great tours for cheap.
Whether you’re a lifelong veggie devotee, or adopting a healthy diet is among your resolutions, peruse our top picks for places that dedicate most or all of their menus to plant-based cooking. With the Golden Gate Bridge as a backdrop, Greens is a popular special-occasion destination, but if you can’t get a dinner reservation, go for brunch, when the kitchen dreams up some of its most imaginative offerings, such as spiced carrot-cake pancakes and Merguez poached eggs with vegetable ragout.
The vegan Japanese restaurant offers more than 40 original items—none of which feels like it would benefit from the addition of meat. We gave it our best shot but we still have many more restaurants we want to try (we’re happy for the excuse to return). Dessert was a rich flourless chocolate torte, perfectly paired with salted caramel ice cream and crunchy cocoa nibs. There was so much going on in this dish that every mouthful was a flavour sensation, and it somehow all worked harmoniously. The sweet potato and caramelised onion quesadillas were also excellent and we were impressed by the chipotle “nacho cheese” sauce made from cashews on our papas al horno, roast potatoes. The dino kale salad is healthy and satisfying with dino kale, red quinoa, cherry tomatoes, avocado, carrots, cucumbers, toasted almonds, and arugula, all tossed in a lemon cumin vinaigrette. The rainbow salad is a tasty mix of different noodles and vegetables, and the mixed fried plate included delicious light Burmese fried tofu, samosas, and Burmese falafel with spicy tamarind sauce. The sampler included misir wot (red lentils), kik alicha (yellow peas), gomen (collard greens), and atkilti wot (mixed vegetables). Our favourite was the Tejano with pepper jack, jalapeno relish, avocado, tomato, crunchy white corn strips and herb ranch.
It was packed full of tofu, vegetables and noodles, and was especially good once we’d added chile sauce and herbs.
