My purpose in this article is to extract one of the slides from the video and expand on it from the point of view of a meditation practitioner rather than a cognitive neuroscientist.
I think that there is a lot of value in doing this because the extracts present the concepts in very interesting ways.
In this slide, we see three classes of meditation practices: concentration, analytic, and emptiness. The most basic practice, as taught by the Buddha and Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh, is mindfulness of breathing.
The part of the story that I did not tell at that time is that before I met Father Eli, I had taken the Silva Mind Control course. As it turns out, I was given a very powerful mantra by Swami Rama of the Himalayas and continued to practice meditation with the mantra during the summer I trained in the Ozark mountains with Father Eli! There, in the mountains, sitting in my yellow submarine (van), I had one of the most remarkable meditation experiences I’ve ever had. Contemplation is the process of using reasoning and analysis to look deeply into matters of importance in life. This one is especially nice to contemplate, starting from the big bang, to the origin of the galaxy, to the supernova that exploded in our neighborhood, to the forming of the solar system, to the cooling of planet earth to the point where it supports life, and down to the evolution of the human species. Remember, we are all nothing but star dust, and in 5 billion years or more, even the sun will die. Practicing the five remembrances, involves acknowledging that you will become ill, grow old, and eventually die, and realizing that there is no escape from any of these conditions. Loving-kindness meditation is practiced quite widely in meditation circles and I’ve written about it in other posts on this blog. It is one of the most important meditations that we can do to develop compassion for ourselves, or dear ones, and people all over who are suffering.
I have incorporated loving-kindness meditation into my daily practice for over twenty years now.
After you have practiced showing loving-kindness blessings on yourself, and feel comfortable with doing so, the next step would be to substitute your loved ones for yourself in the above verses. You could follow that with people in your extended family, people you know who are suffering, people you don’t even know, and finally, all sentient beings. I have talked about emptiness in many places on this blog, so it is not necessary to deal with it at length in this post. There are various sub-types of Mindfulness, and it may seem like another type which doesn’t take much practice to figure out, but really is one of the more difficult to use effectively and really gain control over your actions, emotions, and even thoughts.
It is very common for most people to lose their sense of belonging and connectivity, or lose sight of the wonder of something so simply accepted as living. In order for one to strengthen memory and concentration, as well as clear their mind of negativity and concerns brought by over-thinking, this common type of meditation can be done. Breathe in deeply through your nose, and out through your mouth – do this rhythmically, in a pattern, slowly, and with great patience. Then, they should sit cross-legged with their hands folded immediately in front of their stomach, which is where they will be breathing from as the center of gravity and an important chakra location.
But, if you really think about it, Prayer is essentially the same thing as many other types of meditation and other practices with insignificant cultural differences. Sufis travel deep into the secrets of their heart in order to merge with their divine nature. The name Sufi is recent, only having been used as a collective reference for about 150 years. While Islam may provide the doorway, once passed there is nothing that need be held on to in terms of practice or function. The ultimate aim of TM can be associated with many of the meditation techniques and philosophies, as such it is a very good example of how any meditation doorway can lead to profound realisation.
The benefits are that if the method is adhered to completely, the rational mind will eventually surrender to the indefinable. While it may seem simple to be able to just give you instructions on how to meditate, I feel that if you really want to incorporate meditation into your life, then there are some important aspects you may want to consider.
With all that meditation can do for you mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually, it is my belief that meditation should be a part of everyone's daily routine. The ancient energy medicine system of Qigong has many aspects of mindfulness meditation, although not traditionally looked at in this way.
This is beneficial because it allows for the "disconnect" between the "true you" and your thoughts. A clear goal is an instruction for your mind to attract the situations, people and resources that align with your highest vision. Some people can easily recognize when they are releasing and shifting, while others need more guidance in how to deal with these situations. Quite simply, there is no right or wrong type of meditation – if it feels good, do it. This type of meditation can be practiced anytime and is particularly wonderful while you’re engaged in your daily tasks. The koans are riddles that challenge our perception of “what is” and are often used as the basis for contemplation.
Each practice may differ in some ways, culturally or otherwise, but they all share a common goal – to calm you and help lighten up your mind. A lot of meditation styles require concentration, patience, and a significant amount of time, sometimes exceeding an hour a day. The practitioner should focus on the sound or repetition for the duration of time, and allow their mind to clear of other concerns. So, on a higher level, grounding can be used to redefine a person’s perspective and help rid them of unnecessary thoughts and negativity. While doing this, whenever a thought enters your mind, calmly push it aside and continue to focus on your breathing alone.

Zazen is very similar to the aforementioned Mindfulness meditation, but with far more strict regulations and specified practice requirements.
When a person prays, they assume a posture, typically lowering their heads and pressing their palms together, either balled or with fingers extended.
Even the idea of group-praying being more effectual lines up with some of the taught beliefs of Zazen in the strength of multiple sources of similar intention. I enjoy expressing myself, whether it's through writing, story telling, singing or playing guitar; I love to teach others, as well as myself. Then there are questions as to whether busy type A personalities can slow down enough to meditate.In order to be successful, meditation needs to be simple, comfortable, and have results that make you want to keep showing up every day. For example a practitioner is as likely to be silently repeating a zikr or prayer under the breath as he or she is to be making a basket or making efforts to be a good and fair teacher of mathematics. A realised Sufi mystic, like a realised being, is a pure representation of the divine and there is no need for creed or regulation. The aim of Kundalini meditation is to become aware of that rising stream, and to ride the stream to infinity. Attention is also focused on the three major centers used in Taoist meditation: a point about two inches below the navel, the center of the chest, and the center of the forehead. The TM technique has been enormously popular especially in the USA where many high profile celebrities and well known personages have publicised their adherence to the method. What is questionable is whether this indefinable is a definitive source or an approximation of the fundamental essence of all mind and phenomena.
If everyone were to meditate on a regular basis, the world would be a much more peaceful place. It can be correlated to mindfulness because as you exercise, you become consciously aware of the interplay of your movement, breath and your thoughts.
It removes ambiguity from your awareness and makes sure that what you get is what you really want.
In my program, we explore these topics and you are guided on the tools to use to help you in dealing with old emotional energies that are resurfacing. Transcendental Meditation, however, only takes 15 minutes twice a day and doesn’t take as much practice to do effectively. This is because the meditation’s effectiveness is more prominent when considering energy flow, requiring specific breathing, posture, and comfort level. Prayers can be said internally or voiced and shared with others, much like other mantra-based practices. The same principal applies as what can be found in theories of thought-forms or Tulpa, which I’ve discussed in a previous article. My strongest drive is the interest in learning everything I can know, and speculating on topics that I can't. As far as the details go, whatever works for you is the right approach, and you have plenty of varieties to choose from. Zazen is the ‘anti-method’ approach to meditation, but it is often done in conjunction with a concentration on a certain aspect of Buddhist scripture, or a paradoxical sentence, story or question, called a koan. The practitioner concentrates on their breath flowing through each of the energy centers of the body, always moving upward, toward the energy center just above the top of the head. Qi gong uses the breath to direct energy, and circulate energy in the body and spirit, but it is not heart-based.
There is sometimes a focus on the breath, but generally no attempt to use or control the breath, and because the sensation is imaginary, and the impetus for it comes from outside, the practice tends to be rather passive. The results of meditation will be different for everyone, depending on your goals, but it will change everyone for the better. When you do the moving meditations, you can feel the energy within you and the energy of the universe.
Even if you choose not to join the program, at least you get a chance to explore and consider some serious questions you should ask before beginning a serious meditation practice.
I know many people will react with the question, "an engineer with an open mind!?" Yes, I find it hard to disbelieve the things which we can see - since I am able to see energy, I am able to consider other potentials which are also deemed "non-scientific".
The key is making time every day to sit, breathe, and connect with the self.Primordial Sound MeditationPrimordial Sound Meditation (PSM) is a silent practice that uses a mantra.
Zazen is very difficult to learn, and it is very difficult to make progress with this method, because of the lack of guidance on how to do the practice. At the more advanced levels, TM focuses on the breath and changes the breath to change one’s state of being. There is little sense of how the heart changes and develops, and no connection between the circulation of energy and emotional states, and no core set of teachings on how to work with emotion. This kind of meditation does not come from an established meditative tradition like the others listed above, and so it is untested as a method of spiritual development.
If the indefinable to which we surrender is still tangible and subject to investigation it does not provide the same level of complete efficiency. Placing your attention on a specific target allows you to affirm and visualize your success, and block out unnecessary interference.
So, prescripted prayers which have been culturally inherited have the same influence as these other mantra based meditations. The mantra you receive is the vibrational sound the universe was creating at the time and place of your birth. Also, it was developed for a monastic setting, making it difficult to adapt to an active life in the world. Like TM, Kundalini is not heart-based in either its method or philosophy, and it can have unpleasant side-effects, which happen often enough to have been given a name: Kundalini syndrome. Not every recorded meditation is an example of guided visualization; the key is whether it contains elements of hypnotic suggestion or the creation of fantasies under the guidance of someone else. When you incorporate the mind and breath, you bring your awareness inward and you learn to do it in a mindful way. It’s calculated following Vedic mathematic formulas and is very personal and specific to you.Repeating your personal mantra silently helps you to enter deeper levels of awareness by taking you away from the intellectual side of the brain. If you are listening to a recording where the guide lays out a method for you to do yourself, or calls attention to sensation and energy already occurring within you, that is not guided visualization, but rather meditation instruction. Again, while not traditionally defined as a mindfulness meditation, Qigong practice has many mindfulness aspects to it. Also, the practice is not focused on your life and your purpose, and indeed the philosophy that goes with it is harmful to the heart, considering desires to be ‘egoic’ and materialistic.
The key is whether you are practicing a method that will enable you to do a practice by yourself or not. Breath awareness is as simple as it sounds—you focus your attention on the inhalation and exhalation. Body scan is a process of focused attention on the physical body starting at the toes and working your way up with heightened awareness and the potential for release or relaxation of tension.
You acquire insight through observing the breath and the mind, and through interaction with a teacher.Zen emphasizes the attainment of enlightenment and the personal expression of insight in the Buddhist teachings. These Sutras (scriptures or teachings) and doctrine are taught through interaction with an accomplished teacher. The teacher will have been given a list of mantas to use and this list varies depending on which year they received their instruction.
The range and variety of meditation techniques in the Kundalini Yoga tradition is very large.Yogi Bhajan, the founder, passed on hundreds of meditations tailored to specific applications.
There are meditations that reduce stress, work on addictions, increase vitality, and clear chakras, to name a few.
