In the USA the number of prescriptions to treat ADHD have increased by 46% in the last 10 years.
In my experience, complete beginners can learn how to teach their children meditation whether they are yoga teachers, school teachers, grandparents or parents.
This is just one of many indicators that our children are experiencing a world that is becoming more stressful, more hurried, more complex and more competitive. Breath is the anchor a€“ All people who practice and teach meditation know that the breath is the starting and finishing point for all types of meditation. Now more than ever, teaching children how to relax and enjoy the pleasure of a quiet, happy mind is so important. We carry our breath with us in every moment, therefore it becomes our anchor, helps us to focus on the moment rather than be distracted by our thoughts.


Meditation is a natural way to manage stress and ita€™s a skill that every child (and adult) would do well to develop.Now I should point out that when I talk about teaching meditation to children, Ia€™m not suggesting that we shave their heads, dress them in saffron robes and send them off to a monastery in the middle of no-where (though that is the normal practice in some cultures who prize meditation very highly). Meditation for children should not be a rigid, formal practice, but rather a form of quiet gameplay that incorporates simple relaxation exercises and positive visualizations.

We can guide them on how to sit, close their eyes and so on, but if they do not want to close their eyes, then do not force them. Like most people I learned a lot of facts and figures, but very little in the way of practical, life enhancing skills like meditation. Prepare and be patient a€“ There are many ways or approaches to mindfulness and meditation, but there should be no end a€?goal.a€? Set an intention for you and your children, but try not to become attached to it.
Neither my school nor my parents ever thought to sit me down and teach me how to calm my mind.
If your children are restless, notice this and perhaps guide them to have more contact with the ground, but sometimes we have to let go and just allow their energy to find their own balance.
