Soy is always a hot topic of debate, especially amongst health enthusiasts, vegans, and vegetarians. The best way to understand why there is such a divided and opposing opinion about soy, it’s best to first look at the soy foods and products people are eating.
Over the last few decades, there have been studies and research revealing the benefits of soy. In addition to all the processed food containing soy byproducts, many people in the West who are eating soy foods, aren’t necessarily eating whole soy bean food items like tempeh, edamame, and natto, but instead are eating processed soy products like tofu hot dogs, soy cheese, soy protein powder, and commercial soy milk. Well, I think foods made out of whole soy beans like tempeh, tofu, edamame, natto, miso, etc. A Super Food is a term used to describe food with high phytonutrients, which have been discovered to be helpful in preventing numerous diseases.
Soy scored a coveted health claim approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1999. Regularly eating soy appears to reduce the risk of diabetes, especially in people who are overweight.  Soy offers complete protein, but without the saturated fat and cholesterol that many people with diabetes want to avoid. People with diabetes are at increased risk of heart and kidney disease, and soy scores big points in these areas too. Two-thirds of Americans are overweight or obese, so it’s no surprise that weight concerns top the list of health issues we care about.
Researchers studying the traditional diets of Japan and China first noticed the soy-bone health connection. Many people mistakenly believe that soy isn’t safe for women concerned about breast cancer. For postmenopausal women concerned about osteoporosis – excessive thinning of the bones – soy can be a valuable dietary addition.
Soy is also important for heart health.  Soy is high in protein, contains no saturated fat or cholesterol, and provides heart healthy nutrients such as calcium, potassium, and isoflavones. Alright let’s talk about soy protein because it’s becoming a big part of our comments, emails and Facebook page. For this article, men are going to feel left out because we’re not going to talk much about the effects that soy have on men. I can link to several studies (in fact, I will) that show that Soy Protein is really good at lowering your blood cholesterol as opposed to other supplemental proteins. For women specifically, soy has shown to have huge benefits, one of them includes to a link with lowered chance of breast cancer. Consuming soy will have an effect on menstruation cycle, that’s true.  This is because it increases the length of the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle.

One such condition people typically turn to soy to help control are the hot flashes that occur during menopause. Most of the studies that have been done have been on animals, the American Cancer Society has stated that consuming soy products may actually reduce the risk of ovarian, uterine, breast, and prostate cancer.
That being said, soy supplements have not been evaluated for safety nor to see if they interact negatively with other medications.

For years, there’s been confusing debate over whether breast cancer survivors should eat soy.
Since soy foods contain large amounts of isoflavones, survivors had been advised against consuming them.
Estrogen (a female sex hormone) has been linked to cancer growth, especially breast cancer, whereby breast cancer patients are often treated with a chemotherapy drug  that blocks estrogen (tamoxifen). Researchers concluded consuming a cup of soy milk or two ounces of tofu per day would provide the levels of isoflavones needed to get the beneficial effects. Soy had been my main source of protien prior to being diagnosed and I have been conflicted about using soy.

Me either – I very rarely eat any specific soy products, but I am always shocked when I read labels and see just how much stuff has soy in it. There are lots of recipes out there for quinoa burgers and the like, so perhaps that might be a good option for you. I’m not commenting on the merit of the whole article, just want to point out one piece of information that is not accurate.

Throughout Asia, soy is part of many traditional diets, and these populations certainly aren’t suffering from the health issues that some claim soy is connected to. Cultures that eat a lot of soy beans are eating cooked, whole soy beans like edamame, and foods made out soybeans (that could also be fermented) like tempeh, tofu, miso, natto, traditional soy sauce, etc. These byproducts are used as thickening agents, fillers, cheap oils, stabilizers, etc., and none of them are healthy.
You will have the same chance of becoming pregnant during that time, it just happens less frequently.
It’s like being lactose intolerant, your stomach just struggles with soy, that doesn’t mean it’s bad for everybody. There have been studies in Asian populations, where they eat plenty of soy, that show they have lower rates of breast cancer. With that in mind, it is a healthier source of protein than some meats and most soy products are low in calories, which may help with weight loss and cholesterol monitoring or lowering.
The remaining 9 percent of soybeans are grown conventionally, but not genetically modified. Is it because accepting that a large population have been eating it as a reasonably substantial part of their diet without a problem for a LONG LONG time would directly contradict the central tenet of your article?
If you can tolerate soy and believe it to be healthy, then by all means, enjoy it as part of your diet! Just because a culture was eating something thousands of years ago, does not necessarily mean that we should be eating it in common times.

Any stinky tofu that you would find in the store has not been truly fermented – factories usually only let it sit in brine for a day or two before packaging. The other thing to take into consideration is that various cultures will have foods that are unique to that culture. If you go back hundreds and hundreds of years, Asian cultures were not eating tofu, soy milk, soy ice cream, etc. I personally think that different people are designed to eat different ways, so what one culture eats may not be right for another. I also get excited about the Shakeology for their nutrition and taste but almost choked when I saw how much it was. I have personally seen and read too much information for me to believe that consumption of much soy is at all healthy.
