The best meal planning that works for me is having something ready to go in the fridge for the work week. I like to cook up a bunch of plain boneless skinless chicken at the beginning of the week to have on hand in case i need a quick protein snack or need to add something to a quick meal – just need to heat it up for 30 sec in the microwave. One of the ways that I have been able to improve has been by stocking up on healthy food when it is on sale and making large meals and freezing extras for when I don’t have the time to cook or shop.
I’ve found to be more successful in my meal planning when I plan my meals before going shopping and only buying the foods for that week. My favorite meal planning tip is to get all the ingredients for the recipes a week ahead of time so you stick to your plan. One of my favorite ministries is serving as the Meal Planning Contributor for The Better Mom, where I share my bi-weekly real food meal plans as a way to help inspire and encourage others. I thought it would be nice to give you the heads-up about what’s on the menu for the week ahead. Whether your goal is financial, a hobby or physique change; having a solid map placed out in front of you makes it much easier to see through some of the challenges you may face.
For my meal planning I will sit down and create three lists, a list of meals and snacks I want to cook, a shopping list and a prep list.
Simply enter the date in the second row and it will fill out the days and dates of the week. My favorite clean meal with left overs is: I make a big batch of clean chili (basically ground turkey, broth and beans, tomatoes, and seasoning) then with leftover chili I drain off most of the juice and put it on a salad for a taco salad.
Every single time my clean eating goals fall apart it is because I haven’t planned ahead. I used to be one of those that bought in bulk, but things would always go bad and we ended up throwing out tons of food. My breakfast gives me the energy I need for my morning workouts and keeps me fuller longer. Also, due to my health issues, eating healthy is essential and has saved us hundreds of dollars in medications and doctors’ visits, praise be to God for bringing me into remission from my illnesses. Instead, what I recommend is that each family make a plan based on their budget and then find ways to cut costs by incorporating some tried-n-true methods for cost savings. I hope these help you, as they have so many others, in creating a food budget and weekly meal plans that meet your family’s budget and health goals.
