The exact meaning and usage of the term varies among the Indian religious traditions (such as Hinduism and Buddhism) but its meaning is from 'sam', with (into), together + 'a' towards + 'dha' to bring (to get, to hold). Aware and fully conscious oneness with soul is then achieved in a most loving way and all cells of physical body are flooded with the Ocean of Divine Love and Divine Bliss for any period of duration - hours, days, weeks until the individual shifts his awareness from the soul back to the physical body. For being full functional in this word, he awareness stay in Connection with the Divine, but stay (back) in the body, which is than normally functional. Nirvikalpa Samadhi is a preparatory step to Maha Samadhi and serves as extreme uplifting of all body vibration (see above) and leads to complete healing of karmic wounds to the open doors to God and divine love for further progress on your way to God. Maha Samadhi (literally great samadhi) is the Hindi word for a realized yogi's conscious departure from the physical body at death. Turiya the transcendental state, somehow serene and unruffled, this state is achievable only to the one who has entirely distilled the mind and left it clear as the sky devoid of clouds and haze. Patanjali portrays five widely divergent positions of the mind: Mudha, Ksipta, Viksipta, Ekagra and Nirodha. LAYAThe explanation of ‘laya’ in Upadesa Saram in Verses 11 and 13 says: “The mind becomes quiescent by regulation of breath, like a bird caught in a net. Evidently, self-consciousness is related to the individual himself and therefore has to be experienced in his being, with a centre in the body as the center of experience. We could simplify all samadhi stages and say that Samadhi’s are only of two kinds, Samprajnata or sabija (with seed) and Asamprajnata or nirbija (seedless). In this Samadhi the unpleasant gross matter and its elements are eradicated from the field of individual consciousness. Ramana Maharshi describes his sahaja Samadhi experience in the following words: “It was in 1896, about 6 weeks before I left Madurai for good (to go to Tiruvannamalai – Arunachala) that this great change in my life took place. It is said that sophisticated yogis, intentionally can leave their bodies as an ultimate accomplishment.
Samadhi is the result of meditation or that state of mind when there is an absence of all idea of individuality.

But some "strange" conditions will be there - better health (near invulnerable), better feelings (even for other person who touches the body with soul atached to the Divine) and "miracles" only by presence, speech (wishes!) and gestures (doings) of the Divine person (also called the Enlighted). Every infinitesimal piece of attachment or karma is completely surrendered unto God and dissolved into the Divine Ocean of Love. Rather than thinking of 'nothing', true samadhi is said to be achieved only when one has pure, unmotivated love of God. Upon development of samadhi, one's mind becomes purified of defilement, calm, tranquil, and luminous.
The Buddhist suttas mention that samadhi practitioners may develop supernormal powers (called 'siddhis'), and list several that the Buddha developed, but warn that these should not be allowed to distract the practitioner from the larger goal of complete freedom from suffering. It confers the comprehension of the perceiver of all incidents in the field of life, while in the world of appearances. In this Samadhi all the karmas and impressions are scorched by the blazing flames of knowledge, it brings about unlimited sovereignty.
Just as a cloud fills the heavens and with its rain quenches all thirst and soothes all dryness, this Samadhi expands as a mist through consciousness in an enlightening way.
It is at this moment in time, that the essence of being knows himself to be the whole, and by being liberated from all body restrictions, he merges perfectly into the awe-inspiring and luminous eternity. The word Samadhi is derived from 'sam' meaning together or integrated, 'a' means towards, and 'dha' means to get or to hold. The five burdens of life, Avidya (ignorance), Asmita (egoism), Raga-dvesha (love and hatred) and Abhinivesha (clinging to life) are shattered.
He says that Samadhi is: “That state in which the mind progressively discards the concept of mediator and meditation” The gap linking dharma-megha-samadhi with kaivalya is basically indiscernible, it can be assumed that they are one and identical, or just one is a prolongation of the other as a same indissoluble spring. So SAvikalpa SAMADHI means "Samadhi (upper meditation) with (tendency to) against or better AMONG imaginations. Relying on the abilities developed in his long quest to become a Buddha, he focused on his breathing and was able to enter the first jh?na, the meditative state with initial and sustained application of mind (vitakka and vic?ra), bliss (p?ti), happiness (sukha) and one pointed unity (ekaggat?). Nirodha: When erratic thoughts are not present any longer and when the mind is in every aspect alert, aware and in the present moment, we can  say that we have achieved Nirodha. In the Asamprajnata Samadhi, the alterations of the mind are absolutely self-possessed and all the remaining mental impressions are annihilated; there are no ideas or opinions at all. Patanjali states that the vital objective of meditation, is the obliteration of the primitive lack of knowledge (avidya) and the comprehension of the fundamental nature of the Self.

The significant issue here, is that Laya is an aggressive imprisonment of the thought process. Nirvakalpa lingers from a few hours to many days, and it is said that if you are engaged in nirvikalpa Samadhi for more than 21 days the soul will depart the physical frame to enter the last state, Maha Samadhi and never return, but usually everybody comes down from it, to share their energy and experiences with everyone else.

Thus, the peripheral nerves of the skin do not perceive any sensation of separation from environment.
The breathing then became progressively more subtle until, in letting go of focusing attention on the breath, his heart became still, bright, aware, awake and radiant. They did not pass away, however they sustained their high climax samadhi and found it unfeasible to cross the threshold to the material universe and act like ordinary human beings. I held my breath and kept my lips tightly closed so that no sound could escape, and that neither the word ‘I’ nor any word could be uttered. No matter how long laya Samadhi lasts one would always come back to normal consciousness with the last thought process that occurred preceding laya. It is impossible to function in the physical world, while in that condition of heightened awareness. The result is that your nervous system will slowly stop the signal transmission to the brain. When the heart calmed to an even more peaceful state, p?ti—the lightness and deep peace of both body and mind—disappeared from the Bodhisatta’s perception. Ramana Maharshi says that by comprehending the nature of ‘laya’ one should endeavor to transcend it, and to not let oneself to be overtaken by such enchantments of serenity.  “As soon as one experiences this, revive awareness and enquire within as to whom this experience of stillness is happening”. When one pierces through and reaches nirvikalpa samadhi, habitually one does not desire to return into normal consciousness.
Practically, the physical boundaries start to dissolve and disappear.More than that, under the effect of a complete relaxation, a pleasant reaction will occur throughout your body. Sukha was then let go of, and he entered the state with only the one-pointed unity of ekaggat? remaining. The heart unified in the state of oneness called appana samadhi, characterized by simply being able to know that during that time there was only the heart, the citta alone: absolutely still, clear, bright, aware, awake and radiant. It is silent and inert, but I feel the full force of my personality and even the voice of I within me, apart from it. That will improve the cardiovascular efficiency and the amount of nutrients and oxygen to the cells are amplified.
The body had completely vanished from the field of awareness.In this state there is just the awareness of the pure citta and nothing else. EEG analyzes show a lowering of brain frequencies from 20-25 Hz to 4-8 Hz during and after flotation sessions. I was something real, the only real thing about my present state, and all the conscious activity connected with the body was centered on that I.
This is actually the creativity, intuitive processes, autosuggestion, visualization and the area of maximum learning ability.
From that moment onwards, the “I” or “Self” focused attention on itself by a powerful fascination. In the flotation tank you can effortlessly entry in the Theta state, without meditative practices, in full awareness. The EEG measurements of those who frequently use Samadhi Tank have shown a cerebral hemispheres synchronization and balancing. Other thoughts might come and go like the various notes of music, but the “I” continued like the fundamental sruti [that which is heard] note which underlies and blends with all other notes”.
This produces a special type of consciousness as a result of activation of the right hemisphere – responsible for intuition and knowledge expansion. This state is also known as appan? citta, appan? jh?na or the fourth jh?na.This is the path walked by the heart of a meditator. In this samadhi one is in the highest state of consciousness, and simultaneously one can operate in the world in a more efficient manner.
More than that, floating does not inhibit the functioning of left hemisphere responsible for logic, analytical and linear thinking and, but simply allows the use at our command, to any hemisphere.However, the most important effect is the breakthrough in advanced stages of consciousness in a deep, deep meditation. One upholds the nirvikalpa samadhi state while concurrently socializing and working in the world. One is in this state while awake sleeping or dreaming, and is employing the body as an ideal device to work in the physical plane. If someone reaches the stage of samadhi where the body has disappeared, samadhi characterized by vitakka, vic?ra, p?ti, sukha and ekaggat?, the citta is then able to advance to the realm of vipassan?.

The Vaishnava Bhakti Schools on the other hand describe Samadhi as an absolute absorption into an object of devotion, a deity in this case.
They believe that instead of thinking of “nothing,” (nothing being nothing else that a conceptual thought) a proper samadhi is supposed to be accomplish through uncontaminated, unadulterated love of God. At this point the meditator shouldn’t hurry to get up from the place where he or she is sitting.
If there are thoughts arising, then allow the citta to think, but make sure you mindfully follow and are aware of each mind-moment as it thinks. It’s essential however, that mindfulness follows each moment with focused awareness, until the thinking ceases and the citta once again enters the peace of samadhi. Most meditators however, have the misunderstanding that once one emerges from samadhi, if thoughts arise one should try to prevent them, try to not think at all.
Whenever one attains to one of these levels, if one can do it often, honing it until proficient, until an expert, able to enter samadhi any moment one wishes, this is even better. This focusing of the heart’s awareness during every activity, in every posture, indicates that the heart is beginning to become composed. The heart with mindfulness and clear comprehension (sati-sampaja??a), aware of everything that’s happening around one, well established and composed, consequently lets go into its natural state as well.
The heart with s?la, samadhi, mindfulness and clear comprehension during every moment of standing, walking, sitting, lying down, sleeping, eating, drinking, acting, speaking and thinking, will be continually aware and keep pace with the flow of causes and conditions. At this point wisdom (pa??a) begins to arise.The heart with mindfulness and clear comprehension, with continuous, sharply focused awareness, becomes increasingly energized and firmly determined.
This heart inclines toward the path of right practice and eventually becomes permeated with the flavor of Dhamma, by the words of the Buddha. It is paying attention to oneself, comprehending oneself, and it leads to the mindful wisdom of knowing oneself.
The first is to contemplate one by one each of the traditional 32 parts of the body, beginning with the hair on one’s head. Repeat the process, backwards and forwards, over and over, until the heart is convinced that there are bones in there.
If the skeleton is still and stable, without change, this is called gaining the uggaha nimitta. This stage of the meditation is referred to as the arising of the patibhaga nimitta.When this image of a skeleton is still, stable and without change, this is samatha meditation. When the skeleton is manipulated, broken down, crushed into powder and disintegrates, the heart has then entered the realm of vipassana.
