Brain training exercises can boost your memory, but don't expect them to make you any smarter, a small new study says. Researchers from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Arizona State University, Michigan State University and Purdue University found that brain training seems to improve working memory capacity (the ability to keep or quickly recall information under distraction), but doesn't seem to have any effect on general fluid intelligence (the ability to practice complex reasoning skills and solve new problems). Past research had suggested that there was a correlation between the two, with some hypothesizing that boosting one would then boost the other. The study, published in the journal Psychological Science, included 55 college students who were assigned to 20 days of brain training. Before and after training, all the participants underwent tests to gauge their working memory capacity and fluid intelligence, and improvement in each. Researchers found that only the participants trained in the complex span tasks showed any improvements in working memory capacity by the end of the study. However, none of the groups had improved fluid intelligence after undergoing the brain training.

Some might say that, since working memory capacity and general fluid intelligence appear to be strongly correlated, it could happen that, by training the first, one might experience an improvement in the latter. Several years ago, a certain handheld gaming device was basking in attention from one of its highest ever selling games.
There was meant to be some genuine science behind the above game, but few would have ever thought that this would have made its way into mainstream psychological treatment. Brain training works in exactly the same way as the name sounds – it trains our brain to react to situations like we want it to. It works on the same principle as cognitive behavioral therapy; but the main difference here is that a computer does all the work for you.
Of course, we are omitting a lot of technical jargon here – but this is the basic gist of things. Unsurprisingly, common psychological issues such as depression and anxiety were mainly targeted in the initial phases of neurotherapy.
The previous section painted a hugely positive outlook on neurotherapy, and showed just how effective it can be for conditions such as depression. Mental skills cover a wide range of psychological abilities, probably too many to cover here.

Realizing that we’re constantly “writing” stories and scripts for ourselves and acknowledging that we have the power to rewrite them with a different ending. Just like you help your clients train their muscles and energy systems, you can help them build their mental skills. Focus on purposely doing certain things (many of which are new) and not doing other things (many of which you actually want to do more). Listen to your experience by letting go of what’s not working, and considering other new and different options. Negotiate for what you need with the people around you including family, friends, and colleagues. Stay resilient, flexible, and optimistic in the face of inevitable setbacks which are bound to zap your energy, and even. Change some of your beliefs about who you are, what you need, and “how things should work”. When you help your clients build mental skills, you’re helping them become more powerful, confident, and better able to handle whatever life throws at them. Along with helping your clients through the change process, brain skills help them cope with stress.
Not only have clients tried many diet or exercise plans before coming to see us (which makes them understandably frustrated, anxious, and discouraged), they’re also often trying to cope with a host of serious lifestyle stressors. 40% of women and over 20% of men say they are often on the brink of a breakdown and struggle with stress management.
Nearly two-thirds of men and women say their work is moderately stressful, and almost one-third say it’s highly stressful.
Almost three-quarters of women say taking care of others (such as children or aging parents) is moderately stressful, and 15% say it’s extremely stressful. You want to hunker down into what you know, and cope in any way you can (which often includes self-medicating with stuff like drinking or eating too much).
In fact, “self-care”  or “time for myself” to a busy parent might seem as realistic as “win a billion dollars and go live in a moon colony”.
Your thoughts and feelings can either get rigid and repetitive, go numb and blank, or swing all over the place from crying jags to stony silence to red-hot rage. Conversely, mental skills can help you navigate the challenges that life inevitably throws your way.

They can see how learning mental skills directly affects their ability to make smart choices. Because once a client starts acquiring mental skills, they see for themselves how powerful those skills are.
The more you’re aware of what you are thinking, feeling, choosing, and believing, the more able you are to change these things. The more you can consciously calm yourself or proactively plan ahead, the less likely you are to make impulsive, stressed-out choices. The more aware you are that your “life scripts” are just that—scripts—the more you’ll feel like you can change and re-write them. That’s why I always say that if you want to coach mental skills, you probably need to get some mental skills coaching yourself, first. The only way to really understand what someone else is going through is to experience it yourself.
Trying to help a client change their body without also working on their brain, guts, and soul is a recipe for failure. They either end up deeply unhappy, surprisingly dissatisfied, or regressing faster than it took to see progress in the first place. Conversely, if you help them work on their “inner game”, they achieve “deep health”, integrity, and consistent performance.
You can make change a lot easier by adding mental skills training to your exercise and nutrition programming for clients.

Many "brain-training" games may be marketed as a way to boost people's alertness and intelligence, but scientists are now warning that such claims are not based on actual science. Sixty-nine scientists from around the world issued a statement this week, saying that there's no compelling scientific evidence supporting the claims that playing brain games may actually help people enhance their mental powers or overcome the effects of aging on the brain. The scientists didn't indicate which brain-training products are making misleading claims and which aren't.
The most well-known is the website Lumosity, which has more than 60 million subscribers in 180 countries, according to the company.
Some companies take their focus a step further from working on basic mental functions — The British Cogmed says that it develops brain-training programs to help children with attention and learning problems, and the Israeli Neuronix says it aims to improve mental function in people with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease.
The scientists involved in issuing the new statement said they take issue with companies that "assure consumers that claims and promises are based on solid scientific evidence," because the scientific literature does not support these claims.
Some "brain-training" products with misleading claims may especially exploit the anxieties some older people regarding age-related cognitive decline, the scientists said.
However, "no studies have demonstrated that playing brain games cures or prevents Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia," the scientists wrote. Although some studies have found that playing brainy games seems to improve people's thinking skills, the studies have generally looked at people's scores on tests given in a lab setting. Still, it is true that the human brain can change and improve, even in old age, the scientists said. The jury is still out on the best way to sharpen mental abilities, but playing brain games is likely not as effective as learning a new language or a new instrument, or exercising, the researchers said.
