Numerous scientists over many years have studied the role of consciousness and how it can directly influence our physical material world.
We’ve written about it numerous times, it’s called the quantum double slit experiment, and it’s a great example of how consciousness can affect our physical material world. In this experiment, a double-slit optical system was used to test the possible role of consciousness  in the collapse of the quantum wave-function. The second experiment was conducted at a Zen Buddhist temple, which was a great place to recruit meditators for the experiment.
This experiment provided more evidence, and in the IONS laboratory the meditators showed “superior performance” as compared to the non-meditators. A third experiment was then conducted, using 33 sessions where six meditators contributed to 22 sessions and seven non-meditators contributed to 11 sessions. In the fourth experiment, thirty one people contributed 51 sessions, and the experimental effect size observed in this study was 3 times greater than that observed in the first four experiments. The study goes on, and consistently outlines a number of factors associated with consciousness (I focused on the ones using meditation, but there are more in the study) to collapse the quantum wave function, or interfere with its pattern.
This experiment is one out of many that prove consciousness and our physical material world are intertwined. A fundamental conclusion of new physics also acknowledges that the observer creates the reality. While overall life expectancy has been increasing, the human brain still begins deteriorating after age 20, and continues degrading further with age.
Another study using similar MRI technology from the experienced neuroscientists at Harvard University revealed that meditation literally rebuilds the brain’s gray matter in 8 Weeks.  The research team’s MRI scans documented for the very first time in medical history how meditation produced massive changes inside the brain’s gray matter. Another group of neuroscientists from Seoul National University in Korea also applied MRI technology to examine the brain structure differences between a well-matched sample of long-term meditators and non-meditation controls.   With whole-brain cortical thickness analysis based on MRI imaging, and diffusion tensor imaging to quantify white matter integrity in the brains, compared with 46 matched non-meditation volunteers, they found that the 46 long-term meditators showed significantly greater cortical thickness in the anterior regions of the brain, located in frontal and temporal areas, including the medial prefrontal cortex, superior frontal cortex, temporal pole and the middle and interior temporal cortices. Leung and her colleagues from University of Hong Kong also reported increased gray matter volume in the right angular and posterior parahippocampal gyri among 10 long-term meditators, in comparison with novices (Leung et al.
After reviewing all these scientific evidences, I now believe that meditation is not just quiet the mind and stimulate relaxation response, but also generate significant changes in the brain, and produce prolonged effects on our brain and physical health. Far from the proverbial mountain top or a quiet shrine, one group of meditators is attempting the ancient practice inside a brain-scanning machine.
This is the unnatural setting in which Zoran Josipovic and David Heeger at New York University have been scanning monks and secular meditators with functional magnetic resonance imaging — or fMRI. What they find could help illuminate poorly understood brain disorders such as stress, depression and even Alzheimer’s and autism. Average people are conscious of either the external world or their personal world, and they alternate their attention between the two. While neuroscientists have made strides toward understanding the brain activity associated with external tasks, the areas that control self-related thoughts remain shrouded in mystery. To learn about this mysterious network, they are probing the brains of people who practice a type of meditation called nondualism.
Experiments in the laboratory of Rafael Malach, a neurobiologist at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, first raised the suspicion that the default network did more than oppose the external network, that it might control self-related thoughts.
FMRI-based experiments usually monitor the brain activity of subjects as they respond to stimuli, whereas the default network tends to activate in the absence of external stimuli.

The Yale team conducted functional magnetic resonance imaging scans on both experienced and novice meditators as they practiced three different meditation techniques.

They found that experienced meditators had decreased activity in areas of the brain called the default mode network, which has been implicated in lapses of attention and disorders such as anxiety, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, and even the buildup of beta amyloid plaques in Alzheimer’s disease. The scans also showed that when the default mode network was active, brain regions associated with self-monitoring and cognitive control were co-activated in experienced meditators but not novices.
The meditators did this both during meditation, and also when just resting — not being told to do anything in particular.
Experienced meditators seem to switch off areas of the brain associated with wandering thoughts, anxiety and some psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia. Large amounts of research have been published which clearly demonstrate that yes, consciousness and what we perceive to be our physical material world are directly intertwined.
