The longer I go in, the crazier and more powerful the state is, and the subsequent effects. One of the biggest health benefits of meditation is increasing the relaxation response, or activating the parasympathetic nervous system, the branch of the nervous system that allows us to "rest and digest." There's a whole host of good things associated with the relaxation response, including boosting the immune system, improving sleep, even increasing cognitive function -- when I meditate more, my thinking is clearer.
It's helpful to understand your intention for wanting to offer them meditation --i s it for them because they're really interested, or is it for you because you want them to be interested?
From the Ayurvedic perspective, the most fruitful time of day to meditate or do any spiritual practice is the vata time of day, when the ether and air elements are most dominant. From the Buddhist perspective, it isn't so much the time of day that matters as much as making the time, incorporating meditation into your daily routine, even if it's just for five minutes each day.
Also, although there's something powerful about sitting meditation, there are other ways to bring meditative moments into your day -- for example, use the time when you're walking to your car after work or sitting at a stoplight to check in with yourself and mindfully observe what's happening around you.

Cast aside all of your previous conceptions about meditation, and start on your own personal journey to define a unique method. This may sound ridiculous, but my meditation position places me right on the floor of my bedroom, with my legs crossed, facing my bedroom wall. If you live in a home with other people, let them know you will be meditating and that fifteen minutes of silence would be greatly appreciated. There is a stereotypical meditation posture that involves your index fingers and thumbs touching, but this is not a requisite.
Tim Ferris, author of the 4 Hour series books, among other things, said recently in an interview that the effects of meditation are understood not necessarily immediately, but throughout the day in how your brain functions, which I agree with. Sometimes, for me, a solid meditation session allows me to undergo extremely stressful, super demanding and sometimes non stop situations throughout my day (which is mainly in building and running my iOS device repair company), without breaking down from stress, while maintaining a pretty optimal brain functionality throughout. First, the integration of the many systems of the brain, which is what happens during meditation, can be achieved faster in some than in others, which could explain a shorter induction period in meditation or shorter meditation times. I mean, the lights turn on, my calm prevails, verbal fluency kicks on full blast and cognitive speed and regulation throughout the day sticks around. I think a lot of the elements of whether or not you have a good meditation session are extremely important here, and should be considered in formulating expectations about any meditation session.

When you meditate, you balance the nervous system so that the "fight or flight" response is activated less frequently. I have a hard time slowing down, but when I'm swimming, running, or cross-country skiing, I feel as though I'm in a meditative state. I have a friend whose meditation is biking in a mindful way, being aware of body and breath.
It refers to the experience of silent, inner wake-fullness – not wake-fullness of what’s going on in the outside world, but awareness of the silent reservoir of intelligence that resides within ones own Self. The reason for meditating are two-fold: the first reason is the experience itself, and the second is the results that experience produces after meditation. After meditating, most people go into activity with far greater energy, creativity and efficiency.
You can read more about this research on the American National Institute of Health website. I decided that a natural environment would probably be the most conducive to mental rejuvenation, so I set out to my backyard and plopped myself down on the grass.

I’ve been able to, particularly with self directed internal programming (aka self hypnosis), get into really deep meditative and regenerative states within 5 minutes. It’s amazing that so many results can come out of just that simple experience of deep inner rest! It can be very beneficial to animate your breath in the initial stages of your meditation, by imagining during your inhales that you are breathing in tranquility, strength, or any other disposition that you feel you want to embody. Anytime you sit with the intention and willingness to be mindful, transformation will naturally happen. Meditation can lead to a quiet mind or a sense of selflessness or unity with the whole, but you can't go into it grasping for that. You want to first bring stability to the mind, perhaps by focusing on one thing, such as the breath, and then eventually expand the field of awareness to encompass bodily sensations and thoughts. I think all the time!" Through practice, you start to observe the way your thoughts move and change, and develop a more subtle awareness of your experience.
