It’s no secret that meditation has a lot of benefits and can help you with many aspects of your life. One of the things you’re going to want to do when you’re first starting out with meditation is to pace yourself. A lot of people believe that they need to have a special room, incense and other meditation equipment to have a successful meditation session, but this is untrue. About two months into Sobriety, I took a Compassion workshop for a day, and this also included a bit of guided Meditation. BUT then I started hearing about Meditating on something, a particular topic for example.  What??  I thought you meditated to have a clear mind?? In my regular Thursday meditation classes I have been taking since about Week 8 of sobriety, I learnt that you can choose a topic, and think about just that topic, while you breathe in and out.  To be more specific for example, you could Meditate on JUST thinking about a sick loved one becoming Well while breathing IN, and on your OUT breath, focus on the negative energy of the illness being puffed out as thick black smoke. I quickly learnt to improve my technique, it was like anything, it just took practice. At home when I practice, I set the timer on my phone and  meditate for about 12-15 minutes, this is a manageable amount for me right now and just enough to start to settle and relax (and dribble).- then I KNOW I am relaxed!
Then, this morning, 112 Days into Sobriety and coping pretty well so far, I felt very tired and edgy and felt like I should sleep.
So for the first time, I chose to meditate because I felt I NEEDED TO, not just because I was practicing how to do it out of class.
I have to honestly say I came out of that meditation feeling like I had had about two hours sleep.  No bull!
Initially I did it because I had an incredibly busy day ahead and I needed to be able to cope.  The meditation set me up nicely and put me into a nice calm space, ready to forge ahead. I am a regular chick and would not describe myself as alternative or particularly spiritual. Part of my journey has been about finding my own truth, not just accepting everyone else’s.
Meditation is a personal choice that needs to be left to self-determination no matter what stage of your recovery process. One of the first types of meditation people usually try is a breathing meditation, where the main goal is to focus all of our awareness on the sensations of our breathing.
The problem is that whenever people find themselves being distracted away from their breathing (our focus and thoughts drifting to other things), then they feel like they fail at meditation or they aren’t good at it. However, the whole point of beginning meditation is to first become more aware of just how distracted our minds can be. That’s why you are practicing meditation, so that you are able to better direct your awareness toward your object of focus.
Whenever you find yourself distracted during a meditation, just make a mental note of your distraction. Another common problem when people first start meditating is that they find themselves quickly becoming bored and tired, and sometimes even falling asleep.
Try meditating with your eyes open (you can still focus on your breathing with your eyes closed). Different things will work differently for different people, be willing to try out new things in your meditation practice to discover what works best for you. To overcome this problem, try to consider all of your experience a part of your meditation. This also means that every meditation is likely to be a little different from the last, so don’t get too attached to any single experience you have.
