Today we’re going to look at the self-development side of English, exploring the different ways in which the practice of MEDITATION can help you improve your English. I’m also going to provide some resources for people interested in learning more about meditation. Before we talk about more English and meditation, it’s important to give a general overview of what meditation is. Sitting down in a quiet place (for optimal energy flow, cross your legs, but that isn’t always necessary.
Focusing your attention on your normal breath, a mantra, prayer, or even a candle or some other physical object.
A psycho-technology that is scientifically proven to dramatically improve mental functioning and psychological development. If you’re interested in learning more about the specific technique, you can find more information at the bottom on what it is, how to do it, and other articles on meditation and language learning. When you first start meditating, one of your first realizations is that you have difficulty concentrating.
The first skill you develop with meditation is concentration, and this will gradually calm the many conflicting voices and help you remain present and focus on what’s happening around you.
This is extremely important for speaking and listening to people in English and for the next advantage, a strong memory. I have one student that was so spacey and fairly inconsistent with her English, sometimes speaking well, and sometimes really having difficulty. The English learners who benefit the most in this way usually have a problem with attention, and the byproduct of that is a poor memory.
This is great for every area of life, but if you apply it to English, you no longer feel constrained or scared to speak. As an English teacher, one of the biggest barriers I see (especially in women) is that people are controlled by their fears. Because you choose to sit down and look at your mind, you start to understand how it works, and over the weeks, months, and years, you will experience immense growth in your ability to understand your mental processes, and those of other people too. In the meantime, it would be really cool to see you participate with thousands of others in the Real Life English International Community. I attribute a lot of the success I’ve attained in other areas of my life to all of the meditation I did when I was younger. Meditation especially helps with your ability to stay focused while trying to understand someone speaking a foreign language. If you’d like to join the conversation, simply write a reflection on your own blog about this verse, and follow the link-up buttons at the bottom of this post. Of course whether you link up or not, we’d love to hear from you in the comments or on twitter! Out of the corner of my eye, I saw her studying me and I could tell that she was contemplating whether her thoughts warranted being spoken aloud. I wondered how she could know much of anything about me after our brief and isolated interactions, but I stored her words away and considered whether this might be true.
I smiled and probably looked over my shoulder to make sure there wasn’t some dazzling individual standing behind me. Regardless of where my personality ranks in such matters, it occurred to me while at work this week that there is at least one person who sees something different. For me, Matthew 5 is an encouragement to live in such a way that our light is undeniable; that we glow with some intangible quality that makes others raise an eyebrow.
Light-shining should be so intrinsic to our Jesus-following-DNA that it is just as much a part of us as eating our lunch; that is it just as natural as breathing deeply. Light-shining should be part-and-parcel to our very identity — not an add-on at the buffet bar of personality.

Shining your light should give others a reason to take notice and say thank you. If the recipient of your kindness is already a believer, they will thank God for you. And if the witness of your light-shining is not a believer, your behavior should open the door to them asking questions.
May God pull open any shades I draw or blinds I close; may He wipe away any haze in my windshield, so that by looking at me, they see HIM.

I believe that one of the biggest obstacles to people meditating are all of the misconceptions about what is supposed to happen when you meditate.
So today I thought I might offer some insight into all of the things that meditation is not. On top of all these misconceptions, I think many folks think that their day will be better because they gave time to the cushion.
So with all of this said, and apparently showing you how many things that meditation is not, one might wonder why even bother to meditate.

If you think of your brain as the hardware, and the mind as the software, it’s as if you’re running a super sophisticated program that actually changes the hardware. They don’t speak fluently because the program (English) is currently too heavy, and their brain just can’t work fast enough. There are many techniques, and although I’m not a meditation instructor, I’ve been practicing almost every day for 7 years. Improved Concentration: Meditation helps you develop a razor sharp concentration for whatever you’re doing.
Your mind is full of thoughts about the past and future, desires and fears, things you’re excited and worried about.
Improved Memory: With increased concentration, and other aspects of improved mental functioning that meditation brings, you will drastically improve your memory.
Her mental software was functioning so much better, and she didn’t have to think nearly as much about the words she was about to say. These are people who have a natural inclination to be “spacey” (very distracted).  They space out (think about other things, daydream), they get distracted really easily, and this does not help your English.
Improved Self-Confidence: With consistent meditation, you develop the capacity to observe your thoughts and emotions, and with time you learn to stop reacting to them. Improved Self-Awareness: A final area where meditators improve their English is their own self-awareness. He has lived and taught English in Mexico, Colombia, and currently lives and teaches in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. She has written for several local and national publications and now writes for Oakland Local.

I pondered this as well, knowing how often my attitude is sour and my mind fills with complaints while my heart is out-of-joint. Does it mean my Bible–or yours– is in full view of anyone who enters my home, gets a ride in my car, or passes my desk? And any effort to stop your mind from thinking, or discontinuing thoughts, is only an exercise in futility.
Increasing our skillfulness and acceptance of our minds and this life that we are experiencing.

But we are not being kind or loving to them or ourselves if we do not take some time to exercise our patience and develop our skills in mindfulness and understanding.
Actually, both the hardware and the software become more sophisticated, faster, stronger, and less problematic. With meditation, you’ll be able to learn more and express yourself better because you’ll be more present and your thinking more focused. With this attitude, confidence will quickly grow, and you will stop listening to the voice of fear. If you have balance problems at first, run your hand along a wall as in the very first picture. Instead, you should aim to look four to five steps ahead of you; just enough to know the immediate terrain you will walk on.
And these, my friends, are simply delusional mental formations happening in the quiet space we occupy. This is the benefit of meditation, and one that cultivates a heart of compassion toward yourself and your own BUddha nature. She is also a community organizer working on community festivals, accountability and social justice issues.
Challenges, difficulties, sickness, sadness, disagreements, financial woes, will all come and go just the same as they would without meditation.
And it is with this development, that the whole World benefits from your loving-kindness and acceptance.
There’s nothing better you could do to improve your life and improve your English at the same time. A time for the swirling and muddy waters of your mind to settle and allow a tiny bit of clarity.
So, along with our newfound relationship to machines, we must continually search for ways to, as artist Michael Franti puts it, a€?Stay human.a€? One of the biggest ways to a€?stay humana€? is care for one of the greatest human elements that we have at our disposal, our minds. And if you are sitting and feeling discomfort, then just adjust your posture or position to be comfortable.
We know that it is human to eat and to sleep and we know to pay attention when these elements are nonfunctional. It decreases the bodya€™s production of stress related chemicals like cortisol while at the same time increasing the production of mood enhancing chemicals like serotonin. Along with mental and physical health benefits, some also see meditation as a spiritual practice that aids in a deep connection to the divine. Early meditators may find that they cannot completely still their minds and might find this frustrating. Sometimes repeating a word (or a€?mantraa€?) like a€?ocean wavea€? or a€?peacea€? can help. Like cleaning a dirty pan, all the gunk comes to the surface to be cleared away first, so lots of uncomfortable emotions may come before deep feelings of peace. The benefits to the health of oneself and to the health of the community are well worth the process.Ready to give this form of relaxation a try?
