Laurie Levine takes you through a guided meditation into each chakra and energy center for healing and harmony. If you learn how to meditate, you may be doing so due to the many meditation benefits you have been told about. The benefits start even with meditation for beginners, and the stress relief effects are well known and researched. This brief article will outline the benefits, so you can relax knowing that by learning how to meditate, you are on the right track and it should become a lifelong pursuit.
Best of all, regular meditation will help reduce negative emotions and help you achieve your goals.
Unless you start at the beginning with a good process to follow, meditation may in fact increase stress rather than reduce stress.
Health can improve dramatically once you master meditation, and mastering is easy once you follow a simple program. And these are just some of the highlights, as there are many others from sports performance to even reducing the risks of cancer.

There is no single way to meditate, in fact there are as many meditative methods as there are people who practice. It has taken time, but I have finally found a way to gain the inner peace and relaxation that accompanies proper technique. I also like to imagine, during the preparatory stages, that I am on the surface of a very choppy, rough ocean.

When Samantha Keen worked as a Financial Journalist, the intensity resulted in Chronic Fatigue, which she overcame with meditation research and practice. Her practical and effective methods have helped clients thrive in demanding environments for over 15 years. I am very enthusiastic to be part of the Wall Street Coach’s launch of meditation and executive coaching. Meditation is now a part of a broader trend that corporations across America are beginning to include in their programs, thereby giving their teams a competitive edge while improving their employee’s skillset at managing highly stressful environments. In my 15 years experience with meditation, about the same time spent working as a financial journalist, and 10+ years of working with clients in coaching and therapy formats, I find the combination of these techniques help people make the shifts they need in their lives and therefore help them achieve long lasting goals.
It is always great to find out that there is independent “proof” that this works, even though I have my own experience as proof. One of the country’s leading spokespeople on meditation, Jon Kabat-Zinn, the founding executive director of the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, published a paper in 2003 showing that if you took people in a high tech work setting under very high levels of stress and trained them in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) in a randomized clinical trial, they showed a shift in activity in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in particular locations that earlier work had shown was related to the processing of emotion while under stress.
As part of the team at The Wall Street Coach we have put together a program for executives that combines meditation with coaching techniques especially formatted to reduce stress, improve your ability to focus and find big picture goals or direction.
The coaching side of our method then allows you to find strategies to bring these experiences into life, combining both the logical or rational mind with the deeper parts of yourself. One of the most profound moments working with any client for me is when we achieve that shift into the intuitive parts of consciousness, sometimes referred to as states of Being. While this combination of coaching and meditation is a new phenomenon, the incorporation of meditation into the corporate environment is not new.
This particular project worked so well because we had the leader and the team in for three evening sessions of three hours each, and they were able to repeat the techniques in team meetings for 10 minutes a day for over six months after we worked together.

Meditation in a group is fantastic for building team work, as long as everyone in the group is on board and really wants to do it.
Still, it is good to know that it is not just our team that provides these results, there are many studies showing that people get a lot out of meditation-style techniques. The benefits of meditation combined with coaching makes this an exhilarating launch, and we are excited that it also precedes the attention that Kim’s new book, Transforming Wall Street: A Conscious Path for a New Future, will illicit.
You become more self aware, it helps you focus, helps you calm your unwanted thoughts, concentrate and even become more creative.
But you need to make sure you follow a simple program, one that helps with meditation for beginners. The most popular one is meditating by clearing your mind, but there are also focused, thoughtful meditations. Now a dedicated meditator, I have realized that incorporating this simple ritual into your schedule is one of the best ways to respect both your mind and body.
Spending simply ten to fifteen minutes a day on meditation is not much, but it will provide you with a window into your subconscious mind, which has a positive subsequent impact on your physical state and mental clarity.
Cast aside all of your previous conceptions about meditation, and start on your own personal journey to define a unique method. This may sound ridiculous, but my meditation position places me right on the floor of my bedroom, with my legs crossed, facing my bedroom wall. If you live in a home with other people, let them know you will be meditating and that fifteen minutes of silence would be greatly appreciated.
There is a stereotypical meditation posture that involves your index fingers and thumbs touching, but this is not a requisite.
The combination of meditation skills with coaching is exciting to me because it is a new and innovative way to help executives defeat stress, succeed in their pursuit of big picture life goals, while connecting them to a deeper sense of satisfaction and well-being. Studies do show that meditation-based techniques give people fundamental changes of consciousness. The MBSR group shifted from having more right-sided activation in the PFC to more left-sided activation.
There are many styles of meditation, so here we use meditation techniques to take you into the core of your own knowing, beyond the rational mind which often gets stuck with logical thinking, and into the more creative parts of your consciousness where the magic of insight happens. This unique combination of skills allows you to make changes in your life that are profound, practical and lasting because the shift comes from the inside-out. The experience is touching every time, but the reward comes when I see people use this bigger magnitude of themselves to achieve real and lasting change, whether personal or professional.
Many financial firms are introducing meditation of one kind or another for their employees, some with significant positive results. Up until 1983, only three peer-reviewed studies on meditation had ever been published, according to the article To Make a Killing on Wall Street, Start Meditating, by Katherine Burton and Anthony Effinger published on Bloomberg News May 28, 2014. Among other functions, the prefrontal cortex processes sensory information, handles rational decisions and regulates the amygdala, the structure that feeds our fight-or-flight instinct,” according to Burton and Effinger. Kim speaks about the importance of meditation and mindfulness in this book and I think you will be surprised and inspired when you read it. I’m going to give several different types a try in order to see what works best for me. I decided that a natural environment would probably be the most conducive to mental rejuvenation, so I set out to my backyard and plopped myself down on the grass. I try not to keep my eyes closed, nor wide open, with nothing in my vision to cause distraction (hence, the blank wall a foot in front of me). After a couple minutes of breath and mental vacancy, I slowly begin to submerge into the depths of the sea, where there is only complete stillness and dark. For example, you could do it for 15 minutes right after you wake up, or before you fall asleep (just as long as you’re not too tired!). Simply place your hands in a comfortable position, even together, but try to have them facing upwards.

Share below your meditative techniques, and how you feel you have benefited from incorporating this simple pleasure into your routine.
For example, in just 8 weeks of meditation the brain can be re-wired, which improves the ability to learn. Leaders have told me these techniques give them the ability to see strategy, the big picture, and work creatively with their team from a whole different level. Our whole approach is crafted to give you a new level of vision or insight into yourself and your life, and then provide perspective enabling you to take practical steps in your life or career that will create lasting change. Some traders have seen almost a 1000% increase in their performance,” said Brett Traynor, then Director Saxon Financials, Singapore. By 2013, there were more than 1,300 studies showing an almost absurd number of benefits, from alleviating anxiety, depression and insomnia to reducing heart disease and speeding recovery from psoriasis, according to Burton and Effinger. Rarely do we find the time in our schedule to simply focus on silence, breath and peace of mind. I closed my eyes and began to focus on my breath, but within three minutes I had already accumulated about seven mosquito bites. I personally do not focus on a mantra, but instead place all of my attention on my breath–how it enters and exits my body. It also improves memory skills, creates better executive decision-making and opens up new perspectives; all important functions to have yet it also helps you to run at optimal levels even when under stress, according to studies from Massachusetts General Hospital. To quote Albert Einstein, “You cannot solve a problem from the same consciousness that created it.
It can be very beneficial to animate your breath in the initial stages of your meditation, by imagining during your inhales that you are breathing in tranquility, strength, or any other disposition that you feel you want to embody. You can never expect to begin meditation and enter into the deepest state instantly; it will usually take a few minutes at least (or more, in the beginning).
On your exhales, imagine that you are unleashing any tension, anger or despair you may feel.
He further adds, “Important part of mindfulness is reestablishing the connection with our body and sensations it experiences.
This means waking up to the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of the present moment”In our daily fast paced lives, it is easy to stop noticing the world around us be detached with the way our body feels or experiences.
We end up being caught in our thoughts and not noticing how those thoughts is driving our emotions and behavior in the present moment. Most often these thoughts are of incidents that have happened in the past or anticipation about the future.
Mindfulness practice teaches awareness, to be aware of our thoughts, whatever they may be and be fully present in the moment.Mindfulness is a form of meditation, where in you are practicing to be fully aware and focused in moment. It would seem very obvious or too simple to have this awareness or being in full control of your thoughts, but it is not.
A very good analogy is standing on the curb and watching the cars pass by, where cars are your thoughts. As a simple task, try closing your eyes and just try not to think anything or focus on your breathing.
You will notice that in the span of 5 minutes, your mind would have wandered off into different thoughts before you even realized or were aware of.
Over the decades, we are trained to live our life, chasing future or pondering over the past. Ironically only thing that we have in our control is this “moment”, Past has already happened and future is unknown. Yet, we forget this and spend days, months, years clogging our mind with contemplations, analyses, worries and speculations.Mindfulness is a form of meditation where we try and live the present, with a simple goal of “being aware”. Mindfulness meditation is grounded on rational and scientific plane and now there are many studies and trials that have shown to have a significant impact on various issues like OCD, PTSD, Anxiety, Depression, etc.Whatever maybe your goal, dedicating 10 minutes of your daily life to a formal practice of mindfulness meditation can greatly bring that mental peace and awareness.
