I know that this is not 100% travel-related, but for me a fair amount of my life goals are also travel goals! I am currently at my parents’ house, visiting my family for a few days before I start my new job. Anyhow, as I was looking for something the other night, I came across my book of life goals.
I am not professing to be any expert on this, but if you just happen to be someone like me, who occasionally feels a little bit lost or disillusioned, these are my tips for setting and achieving goals. Once you’ve acknowledged your dreams and bought the book, you need to actually commit your goals to paper, otherwise it is all too easy to let them slip away again and use that lovely book for shopping lists, or something. If anything, this process has made me appreciate that I am even more committed to some things in my life than I was back then. And if you forgive me this slight tangent, I  hope that some of the things I have learnt about setting and achieving goals will help you on your path in life, whatever it might be. If you leave the book somewhere highly visible, it will nag and taunt you on a daily basis.
Reading my goals, I can sense how tentative I was about travel writing – and even travelling.

I completely agree – goals can always be adapted and changed once you have them down.

There are three important steps to understand to ensure that you can achieve the life goals that you desire.
Limitation to Life Goals: It is very important in setting life goals that you have a limitation to it. If you are vague and not able to measure what you want to achieve you will keep on getting what you have always got. I remember writing it about 10 years ago and thinking that these were things that I really wanted out of life. I’ve helped my older son in his transition to a new land and getting his business off the ground and helped my daughter buy her first house. We used to watch Jeopardy with our kids in the evening and I always thought “I could do that” – however, in the big scheme of things, it really isn’t a top wish for me any longer.
Being self-employed, I didn’t immediately know my monthly income off-hand like an employee with a bi-monthly paycheck would. During the 6 months that I was preparing, planning, and working on Learn Lettering, I wrote down my goals and believed that I achieved them. But you can’t think like everyone else if you want to see different results from them. Evaluate whether what you’re doing is going to enable that goal and make it possible. I wanted to graduate with a 2:1 degree, complete a PGCE and secure a full-time teaching job. I wrote the stars quote at the front of my book, as a kind of permission to write down the big things I wanted out of life.
If you write down some of the most important things to you on a scrappy bit of paper, how much are you really valuing them? I think another important thing to consider, though, is to not be afraid to modify your goals. I’m currently coaching my own clients and there are several other products and packages in the making.
Many times people desire things but don’t have a great path and end up back where they started. When you are uncomfortable, you stretch your emotional set point to then the desire to achieve your life goals. In terms of preventing or reversing heart disease it becomes so important to set a road-map for success.
Not exactly a bucket list, because there are other activities I might add to it for that, but key things that I felt would add value to my life.
And some, I really don’t have all the control over (health) but I am an active participant in the outcome. And as to #3 – we bought our water view property a couple of years ago and are in the planning stages for the home we want to build there.
Once I’m free of those, however, I can make a career change and start my new full time writing life. Our third child will most likely go on to grad school and we’ll do our best to help him there, too.
After that, I have the retirement transition spreadsheet drafted and I’m pleased to say it is all doable. I had to run some calculations and add up revenue from various sources, but once I did, I saw that I had passed $3,000 in the last month.
It comes down to whether you believe you can achieve this—whether you believe that you already have achieved this.
People will talk you down from your goals—why let someone who shares such an infinitesimally small part of your life limit your potential and your aspirations?

If your goal is to travel and your job does not allow you the freedom to do so, then get out of that job. And with complete selflessness, my parents have allowed me to keep it like that for the last six years, rather than turning it into a minimalist guest room. You need the courage to accept the dreams you have, even if they seem fantastical and remote, otherwise they have absolutely no chance of happening. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go and research trips to Africa and PADI courses. The best part is that, by working with Stephenie, I have been able to overcome my own mental blocks so that I now feel so much more in-tune with my own creative flow. Although you can always retrace your steps, you might not have the time, opportunity, energy or resources you once had when you could have made your goals happen one by one. For example if your life goals are to eat healthy, a measurable way of knowing that would be to eat more vegetables. If you are not used to eating well you will be stretching yourself to have your essential vegetables daily.
I am making headway now in terms of what I want to take on and how I can do it – but retiring from my full time world of technology and moving toward something more literary is exciting.
I’m also actively volunteering for the PanCan organization and will continue to do so until we move to our new home in a new community. As for Master Gardener, I looked into the qualifying process for it and realized that it involved a lot of procedural and political stuff – things that for me would suck the fun right out of puttering around in the garden. I feel ready for that next phase of life and while I don’t think I’ll ever not stress about money (because that is my nature), my data shows that all should be well.
I step out of my comfort zone to motivate and inspire you to set bigger goals—goals that make your biggest dreams look small. I didn’t place a deadline on it, the important thing was that I had already accomplished the goal in my mind 2 years ago. Maybe you have a goal of what house you want, or how often you work, or when you work, or where you work. Also you can be a part of our website - just upload or browse images and share them with your friends. Once you have put your goals down on paper, your subconscious will get to work on them and you don’t need to worry too much. However, if the goal still stands true and you have not made any progress towards it, the review gives you a chance to rethink your efforts.
Quantifying the amount of vegetables would allow you to know if you are measuring up to your life health goals. If it is to avoid the emergency room that becomes your big why and how you do it is with establishing your life goals. My kids are happy and well (no grandkids yet, which is just fine by me) and my health is hanging in there. Of course, you can also adapt the original timescales you set yourself – it may be that you thought you could achieve something in two years, and now you realise it will take a bit longer. Also, I try to write down a detailed breakdown of how I’m going to achieve a goal… to make it real and more tangible from the beginning! We often have to correct our course but at the same time keep a focus on our vision or dream. I don’t want to feel like I have to put in so many hours or teach so many classes – it just isn’t that important. Write down one large goal and don’t limit it to your current reality or what you think you can accomplish. In fact, the only things I haven’t done from my list are to learn how to scuba dive and to go to Africa. The degree, PGCE, solo travel and teaching career are all taken care of.  It makes me stupidly happy to realise that I can achieve my goals.
That is why everyone must develop the habit of the daily motivational in as many forms as being effective to stay focused.
