Most of us CAN do most things.  CAN DO requires a decision and a willingness to summon the energy and commitment required to shift out of the negative, self-limiting “I can’t” mindset. If it’s your child you’re trying to teach the value of a “can do” attitude, remember that kids watch you carefully, so lead by example.  Be sure that you say, “I can’t,” only when you’re referring to your current inability to accomplish a task.
On the other hand, self-talk – your ongoing, internal dialogue – is a powerful tool you can use to your advantage. 3. Whenever the tone turns negative, swing into action and consciously choose another thought that is at least neutral, if not outright positive. You can train your brain to end negative self talk.  If you do, you’ll reduce stress and improve your mental and physical health.
We all live with Labels, Illusions, Excuses and Stories (LIES) that cover up our true authentic selves.  The first step to conquering LIES is understanding them. The next time you face a problem, instead of dwelling on the what’s wrong side of things – looking for who or what is to blame – step back and ask yourself and others this simple question.


Swapping negative talk for solution seeking on the surface addresses the issue at hand, but on a personal level, it reduces stress.  It also puts you in the right frame of mind to succeed in spite of circumstances.
When the next problem arises, and there’s no doubt it will, respond the emotionally intelligent way. The late, great Maya Angelou said, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”  The answer to whether it matters whether you make your employees feel good, is YES.
This is profound wisdom, not only for leaders who want high performing teams that produce excellent results, but it’s an important lesson for people at all levels of an organization’s hierarchy.  Although true for all generations in the workplace, it is even more so when managing millennials who want to feel like engaged, productive contributors to the team.
Here are a few ideas to put into practice that can help the people you work with feel good about themselves in your presence.
If you’re in a leadership role, involve your team in setting performance goals and solving important business problems. Share what you know about information about upcoming changes and the direction of the company.  In William Bridges’ bestseller “Managing Transitions,” he explains that people at the top forget to share what they consider insignificant details with those affected by a change until it happens. As appropriate, judiciously take people into your confidence.  It can build trust and strengthen the relationship.
Making people feel good at work might be viewed as a luxury, but it managers who use these techniques coupled with an empathetic approach to manage are better positioned to lead the emerging workforce that doesn’t prescribe to a “just suck it up” work philosophy.
Fear that makes you settle rather than giving your unique dreams your best shot.  Do you go for the comfortable because you’re too afraid of that lump in your throat?
Feeling stressed?  Your self-talk – the conversation you carry on with yourself, in your head, all day, every day, about the real and imagined – could hold the key. With a little work, a pessimist can be taught to view the world more positively.  According to the Mayo Clinic article, the benefits of positive thinking include a longer life span, less depression, greater resistance to the common cold, a healthier heart and better coping skills.
Check in with yourself periodically throughout the day to evaluate what you’re thinking.  If it’s negative, consciously choose to find the positive spin. Alisa Bowman, author of “Project Happily Ever After,” says the key to happiness is not in getting, but in giving.  Shawn Achor, a researcher and author of “Before Happiness,” says when we get what we want, we become accustomed to it and stop valuing the thing we thought was so important.


My book “LIES That Limit,” explores the ways we unintentionally sabotage our personal happiness and success.  While we can move from job to job, city to city, relationship to relationship and, feel the short-lived rush of pleasure and excitement, soon, longing for more, or new and different, is back, haunting us once again.
If you’ve been searching outside yourself for happiness, you’ve been going about this is all wrong. As Achor puts it, “Happiness is NOT the belief that everything is great, happiness is the belief that change is possible.”  In other words, if you have played or can play a role in creating positive change for someone else, you’ll learn to see yourself as someone who can create positive change in your own life. Do a reality check and test your assumption about what you fear you lack, don’t know or can’t do.  Ask someone you trust for feedback.
