BKS Iyengar’s first visit to Britain was in the early 1960s, at the invitation of his student, the internationally renowned violinist and conductor Yehudi Menuhin.
There are hundreds of different types of yoga practised, how do you choose the best one for you? Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja Iyengar, known to all as Yogacharya or Guruji – terms of respect for Yoga teachers – presented the world with his own yogic format for achieving the original Eight Limbs of Yoga described by legendary Indian sage Patanjali in his compilation of the Yoga Sutras, 150 BCE. According to Yogacharya Iyengar, his form of Iyengar Yoga arises from eight aspects (astanga) of yoga documented by Patanjali thousands of years ago in his ancient text, Yoga Darshana. The unique twist that Iyengar Yoga brings to the practice of spiritual illumination teaches all eight limbs of ancient times through a defined precision in asanas (poses) and pranayama (breathing). Iyengar Yoga further instructs on the specific ways in which the form of proper posture requires an obedience to the study of moral codes (yama) and self-purification (niyama).
All asana groups – sitting, standing, forward bending, back bending, twisting, inversions, and the supine – are practiced by Iyengar Yoga students. In many of the other types of Yoga classes, a student is left to find his or her own way of performing Yoga simply by observing the instructor.
Iyengar Yoga instructors are required to successfully finish a minimum of 2 years of demanding training before they are awarded with the introductory certificate. Iyengar Yoga is also prescribed for stress and tension relief, which is extremely important in combating the negative physical manifestations of stress on the body. Yogacharya Iyengar provides specific programs of Yoga for the relief of specific symptoms or disorders.
The immediate benefits of Yoga are greater flexibility and strength , and better physical health. The Iyengar Yoga Certification Mark is a guarantee of excellence, clarity and depth of understanding. Iyengar’s style and message began to create a stir in India and word of his teaching spread.
Practice and Benefits: Iyengar yoga’s focus is on alignment and adjustment to allow the body to open and go deeper into each pose. Practitioners are encouraged to bring awareness to precise muscular and skeletal areas of the body. It is said that the essence of Vinyasa yoga began with a sacred Yogi who lived in the Himalayas.
Traditionally Vinyasa sequences are split into three series consisting of primary, intermediate, and advanced asanas (physical poses). Practice: Vinyasa yoga is thoughtfully constructed practice sequences, a step-by-step progression that can bring us to balance in body, breath and mind. Benefits: In a Vinyasa class you can experience the balance of strength and flexibility, movement and stillness where each action encourages the next.

John Norris is a certified Iyengar teacher well-known for his clear verbal instructions, and his ability to bring students deeper in yoga postures. He went on to evolve a complete system of yoga, based on the 1700 year old philosophy advocated by Patanjali. He made annual visits for many years after that, giving demonstrations and workshops and gaining a large number of enthusiastic students. He was still teaching alongside his son Prashant and daughter Geeta at their Ramamani Memorial Iyengar Yoga Institute in Pune, India until a few months before his death.
Iyengar Yoga helps a body to function synergistically; all biological systems in the human body work as they were designed. Anyone suffering from the above disorders may find a whole Iyengar routine set up for them. Iyengar – throughout his 75+ years of practice, teaching and study – has written 14 books, according to his official website.  He is perhaps most well-known for his works entitled Light on Yoga, Light on Pranayama, and Light on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. The classes can be hard work,  as the poses involve intense stretching; however, you will leave the class feeling lighter and calmer. In 1952, Iyengar went to live in Switzerland with violinist Yehudi Menuhin, who was suffering from debilitating pain, depression, and anxiety, which threatened to end his career. In 2004, he was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time Magazine.
The practitioner generally holds poses longer in Iyengar yoga compared to other disciplines of yoga, which allows the muscles of the body to both strengthen and to extend and release.
Also specific to Iyengar, is the use of props, including belts, chairs, blocks, and blankets, to help accommodate structural imbalances that naturally occur in our lives, as well as any special needs such as acute or chronic pain or injury.
Patabhi Jois, a student of Brahmachari’s, was an integral part in establishing the Western Ashtanga sequences of poses.
Many refer to Vinyasa as the “marriage of breath and movement” the linking of one asana to the next in a dynamic flow. Flow classes combine standing and seated asanas (poses), pranayama (breathing), vinyasa (sun salutations), balancing poses and inversions.
Because of its more energetic style of practice, this form of Yoga is ideal for student interested in increasing mental and physical energy as well as mental clarity.
It is also a rich resource for yoga teacher to expand their teaching technique and class plans. So important has his impact been that in 2004 he was named in Time Magazine as one of the top 100 most influential people in the world. His legacy lives on and his enthusiasm and vitality continues to set standards for his teachers and students worldwide. Iyengar Yoga studios and classes – both teacher training and student courses – are situated across the globe.

Born in 1918 into a poor family in the small village of Bellur, India, Iyengar was the 11th of 13 children. A new world opened up for him and he describes in his autobiography, “Light on Life,” feeling free for the first time. Soon a devotee, Menuhin was so impressed by the results that he arranged for Iyengar to teach throughout Europe.
Enjoying a long life and still doing headstands, Iyengar runs his own institute in India and continues to be an influence in the field of heath worldwide.
An end in itself, Iyengar also is often used as a springboard for safe practice of all other types of yoga, as it gives the practitioner a strong sense of body placement and a better understanding of anatomy to avoid injury.
Brahmachari was one of a handful of true Hatha Yogis that existed at the turn of the 19th century. Hopefully you will walk way with a greater sense of inner calmness, breath awareness and overall strength. Iyengar’s steady long-time research and his commitment to sharing the wisdom of Yoga with the world, he makes it possible for people to drastically reduce their suffering. Classes generally start with simple poses and gradually move towards more advanced poses , ending with a period of relaxation .Props, such as blocks and belts, are sometimes used in class. Iyengar moved to Pune in 1937 to dedicate his life to teaching and spreading the discipline that liberated him.
It was around this time in the United States that a woman named Mary Palmer began taking yoga classes at her local YMCA in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 1960. His students were mostly young energetic boys and this practice became very aerobic and athletic. He was sickly and weak at birth and he continued to suffer from a variety of illnesses as a child, including malaria, tuberculosis, typhoid fever, and malnutrition. His years of suffering throughout a difficult childhood left an indelible mark on his philosophy and his teaching and he soon embarked on his own style; one sensitive to the limitations of the student. It found a home in the West because of its emphasis on cardiovascular and muscular strength, as well as the traditional benefits of flexibility and mental focus. Yogacharya Iyengar inaugurated his institute, the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Institute (RIMYI) on January 19, 1975; he has been using “research-based experience” and “experience-based research” to evolve his unique techniques into what is known today as Iyengar Yoga.
In keeping with the medical philosophy at that time, Iyengar faced a life relegated to inactivity and bed rest. It is through his own transformation that Iyengar came to believe in the therapeutic powers of yoga and he developed the use of props to allow all people, no matter their physical condition, to enjoy its benefits.
Hatha classes can incorporate different lineages or styles of instruction, including Iyengar, Vinyasa (Flow), Ashtanga, and meditation.) Another great yogi, Sri Tirumala Krishnamacharya, decided to seek him out to learn about Hatha yoga.
Krishnamacharya spent years studying the therapeutic aspects of yoga from Brahmachari where he mastered many skills in Hatha Yoga. Iyengar continues to teach and run his foundation; at the time of this writing he is approximately 92 years old and has been teaching Yoga for more than 75 years.
