Please tell us a little about yourself, and a Baha'i in your area will get in touch with you. My new friend Mary (whose name I changed here to protect her privacy) feels deeply connected to her family’s Catholic traditions, and experiences the strong pull of those traditions when she contemplates becoming a Baha’i. Western cultures teach their children about Santa Claus, who historians say came originally from the Dutch mythical figure Sinterklaas, and even earlier from the historical Greek bishop Saint Nicholas, the 4th century bishop known for his gift-giving–and as the patron saint of sailors, merchants, pawnbrokers and repentant thieves. In many of the world’s societies, the white wedding dress has long been thought of as not only the traditional symbol of the bride’s purity, but of the new, fresh beginning every wedding celebrates.
Because we learn our own cultural and familial traditions from our parents and grandparents, we may think of them as ancient and everlasting—but that usually isn’t true.
Common religious superstitions, traditions and imitations, Baha’is believe, have done tremendous damage to the human race. The greatest cause of bereavement and disheartening in the world of humanity is ignorance based upon blind imitation.
This revolutionary Baha’i teaching—that every human being should endeavor to avoid blind imitation of the past—doesn’t reject the ancient Faiths.
Baha’is believe that blind imitation of the past closes off the vast potential of the future. This episode came about as a result of a listener requesting some information about how hypnotherapy can address PTSD. Even though symptoms of PTSD may be different, the pattern that causes it in the mind is fairly similar.
So, in this podcast episode, I detail how this sensitization process happens and what makes it turn into PTSD. During the episode, I mentioned that this particular episode came about as a result of a request from a listener. I just wanted to take a minute and tell you how much I appreciate the help you gave me in dealing with my divorce. My journey to a happier, healthy life started at the end of October.  I have dealt with depression and self-esteem issues for most of my life. My sister and I would watch the clock every afternoon because we knew what time he got off work, and, we knew how long it would take him to get home.
Little by little, the pettiness grew into tirades, and those tirades spilled into nearly every area of our lives. Instead of owning up to the fact that our dad was out of control and embarrassing, we tweaked our environment in attempt to bring it closer to what we dreamed it should be. Last year, we made the decision to move our son to another state to participate in a disciplined program that would help with his extreme behavior. Our lives were consumed by trying to tweak the world to keep our son on the straight and narrow. One of our daughters has an addiction, she steals all the time, is in trouble with the police, and lies about everything….tweak.

We made the choice to be foster or adoptive parents to children from difficult places, who make choices, out of their trauma, that shines a spotlight on our family….tweak.
The light may sting at first, it may cause you to squint, but it’s healing and life-giving in the long run.

Many people who take a journey of spiritual discovery feel the same way, finding it hard to contemplate such a transition.
It anchors us to our ancestors, to the past, to the things we think of as deeply important.
People tend to think of white wedding dresses as an ancient tradition, but do you know when they got their start? That “traditional” holiday started in 1908, when a West Virginia woman named Anna Jarvis decided to hold a memorial for her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis—who had been a peace activist during and after the American Civil War, and who created women’s “work clubs” to promote public health and fight the spread of disease.
In fact, many so-called traditions are invented on purpose and come from the recent and not the distant past. Religious traditions primarily originate from the activities of the faithful themselves, from the clergy, or from ceremonial practices that have little or no basis in the original message of the Faith. Ideas and beliefs left by his fathers and ancestors as a heritage will not suffice, for adherence to these are but imitations and imitations have ever been a cause of disappointment and misguidance. It is due to this that wars and battles prevail; from this cause hatred and animosity arise continually among mankind.
Some people speak about having constant nightmares as they sleep, that they cannot control their thoughts, or that they have these traumatic scenes that just keep flashing through their mind that they cannot turn off.
Because medical opinions on PTSD vary greatly and there are many different opinions about it. I feel ready and capable of taking on the world now and know that I have what it takes to walk through the hurdles that this life throws at me.
I look at everything and everyone in a whole new light and because of that I no longer feel like a victim. Being the one that did not want the divorce left me feeling rejected, unloved, ugly, of low self-esteem, and assuming copious amounts of guilt. A couple of years after this incident, I had severe health problems that I now have been dealing with for 18 years.
I have lost over 50 pounds in the last 4 months and this was also over the holiday season when most people gain weight.
We wouldn’t let friends stay too long after a sleep over, because it was embarrassing to be yelled at for petty things in front of them. You may think this is ridiculous but this is actually one of the biggest human defaults in traumatic events. He suffers from Alcohol-Related-Nuerodevelopmental Disorder (ARND), and the results are often tirades that hold everyone in our home hostage.

We used to duck and cover when our child threw tantrums in our neighborhood, or got in trouble at school.
Perhaps you’re stuck in the rut of constantly tweaking your world in attempt to create the world you wish you had. It all began when Queen Victoria wore white to her wedding to Prince Albert in 1840, and her Victorian fashion choice created an industry. These traditions can gradually overwhelm or even contradict the Faith’s teachings, leading to a tradition-bound, ritualistic brand of religion that loses its spiritual foundation.
The religious differences and divisions which exist in the world are due to blind imitations of forms without knowledge or investigation of the fundamental divine reality which underlies all the religions.
I have also had clients tell me about recurring physical pains that occur due to the result of the PTSD. I also explain how to turn off the sensitization so that it no longer has any power over your mind.
So, everything that I talk about in this episode has to do with the behaviors that I help people with. When we decided to catch up, she had recently had her own hypnotherapy breakthrough, and insisted I have mine.
When they did linger, we made excuses for his behavior, explaining that work stressed him out, or we should’ve known better. The decision to move him was difficult, because our son is a very compassionate and loving kid who wants to make good choices. We kept one of our other child’s legal trouble in the dark, for fear of judgment, even though her choices had led her down that path. Facing the truth helped us make decisions for our children that were not popular with them, or even the general public, but were the healthiest for their lives. Here are a few tips that will help you make the transition without feeling "The Fear."Produced by Graham Flanagan.
The requirement in this day is that man must independently and impartially investigate every form of reality.
We even began to form our own buffers, laughing things off, or quickly moving out the door with our friends, so as not to subject them to more yelling. We’re not out of the woods, and we still have a long road to travel with them, but we do so in complete honesty.
One time, after a homecoming dance, I brought my date home to watch movies, and moved her quickly and quietly from room to room, only turning on lights in each room as we went, so I wouldn’t wake him up.
I’ll never forget reading an excerpt from a letter a parent wrote about her decision to move her son to the same facility ….
We had spent so much time tweaking, in attempts to create the son, and family life, that we dreamed of having, that our whole world was in chaos. I used a hammer and left it on the picnic table out back instead of putting it back in the garage.
Just as we had baby-proofed the house when he started to crawl, our time was spent “Sam proofing” our lives.
