This is something Ryan and I do every single week, but I’ve never taken the time to snap pictures, save our receipt and make mental notes about what we do to save money while buying healthy food week after week. When we arrived home from Sanibel and our fridge was all but empty, I figured this evening was a great time to finally put this post together.

While at the grocery store, Ryan and I make sure to take advantage of buy one get one free deals that occur weekly at our local grocery store.
This evening we purchased cauliflower, celery, broccoli and a red onion because these items were on sale.
In the end, Ryan and I spent $102.17, or roughly $51 per person, for this week’s groceries.
I menu plan, and when I’m planning meals I surf the publix ads to see what I can make that will have on sale ingredients.

Although inflation and other costs might cause some grocery-store items to change in price, it is the produce section that experiences the most ups and downs. We all love snacks but look for cheaper, healthier alternatives to your favorite Oreo’s, chips, and crackers.
The cost of eating healthier can go up if you are buying pre-cut or pre-packaged fruits and veggies.


We have all see the ready to cook pre-seasoned meats in the meat department but if you notice, the cost per pound is significantly higher than without the seasoning. Planning meals for the week ahead, checking what you already have and writing a list of what you need will increase your chances of only buying what you need and preventing overspending.
It does a lot of number crunching and analysis of information that it gathers, and that raw data is turned into digestible information that customers can use each time they shop.

Plus, in many cases, fruits, vegetables and even items like coffee are cheaper and of better quality than what you’ll find at the big-box store.
That way, when you open the freezer to reach for the ice cream, all you’ll have is the bag of frozen fruit for a smoothie. Foods like black beans, nuts, wild rice and whole wheat pasta can be purchased in large quantities. Not only will you pick up foods that are often high in salt and fat, but you’ll often end up spending more money per-ounce in the snack aisle than in the produce aisle.

I jot down items we run out of through the week and try to have a rough idea about the meals we’ll create through the upcoming week so we can buy the necessary ingredients. We currently have four packages of Alternative Bagels, one back of bagel thins and two packs of sandwich thins in our freezer because we stocked up when the items were buy one get one free. We didn’t buy kale or asparagus though we initially thought we would because they were not discounted. Berries are more of a “special treat” since the price of blueberries, strawberries and raspberries vary so much. I love seeing how other people shop (for healthy foods, too) to get more ideas for my own shopping trips.
I know this is an old post but I am just now reading it I have another tip that I have discovered and would like to share. You can find great deals tucked away in magazines, newspapers and even on product packaging.
This is simply because fruits and vegetables are more available at certain times of the year. You see a gorgeous girl talking about how great she feels after eating such-and-such and chances are you're going to feel a connection with that product. Sometimes we may buy something because it seems cheap, but when we check the cost per ounce or size, what we thought was cheaper, was really more expensive. Yes, it tastes great and it can be a treat, but to save money on your grocery bill, cutting soda can save you hundreds of dollars a year or more. But look for other ways to get your filtered water instead of buying it in 1 liter to 1 gallon bottles. Make your own popcorn with the bagged loose kernels or bake your own tortilla chips for that salty craving.
Cashback then tracks in members accounts within 30 days. A bonus with cashback discounts is that they apply even when the products are already discounted or on offer, so shoppers can double up on savings. By using a cashback credit card on supermarket shopping throughout the year, shoppers could accrue savings that could go towards the Christmas food shop at the end of the year or a treat etc. For example, Nestle Cereals are a great option for breakfast or even snacks in between meals at a cost of just 24p per bowl – including the milk.
After a few days of eating healthy, you won’t miss the ice cream — or at least not as much.


By buying in large amounts, you’ll make sure you don’t run out of healthy food at home and turn to that refrigerator magnet for pizza delivery. If you love hunting for bargains, you’ll miss rummaging through the end caps in the store, and purchasing food online could be more expensive. You should also avoid visiting the store for one or two items, as you will often buy more than you intended. However, don’t buy in bulk just for the sake of saving a few cents here and there, and don’t buy huge cartons if the contents will be wasted. You can top up the list with items wherever you are, without worrying about losing it or leaving it at home.
Consider making a vertical garden against a wall in the yard, or grow tall plants like beans in a sunny spot.
A bag of beans or seeds will provide healthy, raw sprouts for sandwiches and salads, and rotating your crops will keep you in constant supply. How else will you have a great lunch to take to work the next day if you’re always  having takeaways? Drinks have to be the most expensive item on the shopping list, as well as being a chief cause of frittering away money without you noticing. For example, through MyBlogSpark, I learned about more than $9 worth of savings available at Publix, my grocery store of choice in the southeast, available on the Great Meals Great Deals site. I also came home with eight packs of whole wheat tortillas one time because I knew I’d use them and wanted to take advantage of the amazing savings. Today I purchased a pint of blueberries because they were on sale, but when they’re not marked down, I will opt for frozen fruit instead. Of course we’ll go out to eat on the weekends on occasion (typically no more than once or twice a week), so this is obviously a rough estimate.

I’ve learned a lot about saving money at the grocery store, while still buying healthy items for my boyfriend and I to eat (including a lot of fresh produce)! I have found that if you go to the products website they will frequently have printable coupons.
Instead of shopping at whichever store happens to be closest, take a look around your neighbourhood and compare prices. Rather than going immediately for the kind you've heard of, consider scouring the racks to see if there's a better deal.
Alternatively, whole house water filters or even ones for the kitchen faucet end up cheaper. Consider purchasing a French Press for your desk at work if you can’t bear to be without fresh coffee. Often a no-name brand can be half the price of one of the big names, and the taste is virtually the same. I love this post, and I think it is important for people to realize that you can definitely eat healthy on a budget!
If one store has better produce but the other charges less for boxed items, make purchases at both locations.
