There are a lot of things that happen in this world that are terrible, awful, unexplainable things: the death of a loved one, the diagnosis of an incurable disease, the incomprehensible evil that rears its ugly head at times. What if we took a step back and looked at the bigger picture in order to see each situation for exactly what it really is? The only reason we have an opportunity to get angry about someone cutting us off in traffic is because we’re privileged enough to have a car, have a license, and know how to drive (well… most of us…). Earlier this week, I was spending so much time focusing negative energy on things that, in reality, I was privileged to even have in my life. I got off work, and I went to my parents house to change and get ready to nail my MAF test.
It made my post-run bath feel better. Because I am grateful that I can afford and have access to hot, clean water.
It’s easy to get wrapped up in the little bubble of our lives and blow little things out of proportion.
I’m making a conscious effort moving forward to try and take a step back to look at the bigger picture.


Do you find yourself already making your Christmas list and checking it off?  I have to admit I have already been doing my shopping and making my plans.  Then once and a while I stop and remember the purpose of Thanksgiving and my need to give it my full attention and celebrate all that is good in my world instead of rushing to try and get ahead of the game. And when I say little peek, I mean this very honestly may be the most of my office you will ever see. Our photographs have all been released into the public domain, which means you can use them for any purpose. When these things happen, it’s understandable for us to focus our negative energy on them – we may feel overwhelmingly worried, angry, sad, lost, etc. Our hearts become heavy with sadness or disappointment because we did not get the promotion or raise we were working so hard to get.
All of the things that I’ve been annoyed with, angry over, stressed out about this week are all things that are symptoms of privileges I have in my life. What I find, though, with myself and others around me, is that we expend a lot of our negative energy on things that are not worth it. I GET to spend my weekends rolling around on two wheels exploring beautiful areas in Virginia, Maryland and DC. It allows me to have enough free time to train, while also financially supporting me in a way that allows me to participate in my hobbies.


The truth is, the discomfort, the pain of the biting cold wind on my cheeks – it makes me feel alive. But, like most things, the first step to changing is accepting that there is a problem and acknowledging that there is room for improvement. The most important thing is that I use this opportunity to enjoy myself, experience a new city, and grow as an individual. Even if I’m tired after working all day, that beats not having a job and being well-rested. Rosy cheeks, numb fingers, and frozen toes that are a result of riding outside for 3 or 4 hours – those are all good problems to have. It means I am healthy enough to go out and ride for 4 hours without having a heart attack or collapsing from exhaustion.
I want to see my mistakes as lessons and use them as building blocks to achieve a better more fulfilling life. I’ll take running around a high school track 30+ times over not being able to run at all.
