It can be overwhelming to go grocery shopping once you find out you have food sensitivities or food allergies.
Read food labels.A  You need to understand what you are eating and the best way is to read the food labels. I started off by going through my cook books and recipe binder and finding recipes I knew Husband and I both like, I mark each one.
I then handed over those books and the binder to Husband and let him choose which recipes to serve this coming month.
Next, Husband went through all the recipes and read me what ingredients were going to be needed, we assessed what we have on hand and then made a list of the items we needed to buy.
Husband and I do the majority of our grocery shopping at Aldi and then supplement with Meijer and Dollar Tree. How much money did you spend and how does that compare to a normal once a week grocery budget? Husband and I took out our normal weekly grocery budgeted amount of cash and times that by 5 for the 5 weeks of shopping we were planning (we have totally converted to cash only for expenses-it is so convenient and it saves us money everyday by cutting down unwanted and unneeded spending). I also stop at Larosa’s (a local Italian Restaurant) and buy a bag of their awesome pizza sauce. Also, we only had to buy 1 bag of chicken this week to supplement the meat portion our meals. Since this was our first attempt at Once-a-Month Grocery shopping I am sure some items will come up that I had forgotten about and we might have to make a small trip to the store-but I feel good about this and I am excited to see how the month goes.
I am hoping to be able to cut our grocery bill down to $40.00 a month (at least until our freezer is depleted) but I am going to wait for now and see how March goes. When we arrive home from the big shopping day we freeze the items we know will need or should be frozen, pack the pantry with non-perishables, onions, garlic, and potatoes (our pantry is cool and this stuff stays good FOREVER).
Next I pull out anything that might need cooked up, sliced up, or repackaged and get to work. Also, I hear lunch meat freezes well, so we froze about 4 pounds of lunch meat-I will let you guys know how that goes.
Each evening we simply look at the meals calendar on the refrigerator and see what’s coming up. Yeah, Sunday must be the big shopping day cause on the way to church we see the parking lot all full. I noticed some skepticism when I shared a picture of my grocery haul, since we only bought one gallon of milk. Now one thing I suggest to make the most of your produce is to use them in the order of their shelf life. I’m sure that figure will go up slightly once we factor in milk and produce later in the month. I have seriously been considering once a month shopping for most of the same reasons you did it. I would love to be able to shop for a whole month at once, but we do not have the kitchen space to hold that much food, and at this point we do not have the cashflow to afford it all at once. Also, I’m not sure why anyone would expect you to buy all of your milk and produce at once.
I was one of those weekly grocery store shoppers, I would make out my menu on Sunday night and then go grocery shopping on Monday- I pretty much always stuck to my list, but there was a lot of times when I would forget things for certain meals or forget that we were out of something random and have to run to the store later that week to grab it and yes spend a lot more than just getting that one item.
My simple plan is this- I do a monthly menu planning session and then I shop at 2 stores- Aldi & Walmart. First I pull out all my cookbooks and go through them, what's the use of having them if I only cook recipes off of the internet?! I also label days of the week as different types of main proteins- for instance Monday is chicken, Tuesday is fish, Wednesday is beef, Thursday is vegetarian, Friday is pizza etc. A It can be hard to give up your favorite foods…instead, find new ones that you will enjoy that may replace some forbidden foods.

This past Sunday we did ALL of our grocery shopping for the rest of February and ALL of March. It SAVES:  we will save money in gas, we will save money on impulse buys every week, and it saves TIME!
I marked off everyday we will be out of town, out to eat (friends, family, or restaurant) and one night a week to have leftovers (if I don’t plan for leftovers, I forget about them). I wrote down a recipe name and book page number in each day slot on the calendar to make the recipes easy to find on the days we need them.
We get milk, baking supplies, juice, lemonade, snack foods, chicken, salad, bread, peppers, celery, apples, carrots, garlic, non-perishables, plastic freezer bags, cheese, and more. The sauce lasts me about 10-14 months (depending on how often we eat homemade pizza) and only cost $7.99! We recently purchased a cow and pig with some co-workers and our chest freezer is PACKED with delicious meats!
I remember my dad would not even buy gas for the car on Sunday, or pay bills to friends on that day. The sweaters above (bespectacled bunny, dandy cat and hamster king, respectively) as well as the range of 10 shown up top are all part of Mr. This woman (below) is experiencing unprecedented levels of fun while grocery shopping thanks to her hamburger sweater. We have so often rewound the clock since our grandparents got a shock when they listened to the rock.

Some of you wanted to know the cost, while others were skeptical that my grocery haul would last a full month. I knew that part of our problem was the frequent grocery trips and although our meals were always inexpensive, we always managed to add something extra in each our trips. I will double or triple most of our meals because I needed to keep our meal plan as simple as possible. One thing I want to clarify is that we don’t own a separate freezer (looking into buying one!), and our refrigerator is on the small side.
That means that we are eating our bananas first (I bought two bundles, one which was still green) and clementines. Once I finally calculated everything our grand total came out to $392 which also includes a huge supply of toilet paper and paper towels that will likely last beyond a month.
She is a God loving, happy wife, mom of 3, that loves indulging in a delicious cup of coffee paired with a great book.
I have always shopped and meal planned once a week, but my life is so much busier now that I think I could benefit from doing this. I loathe grocery shopping, but wouldn’t it be great if someone would offer that service.
I also don’t have a ton of pantry space, and have a smaller frig, and I really don’t want to be storing groceries in the spare room!
I enjoy cooking most of the time and planning a menu wasn't my most dreaded domestic duty, but sometimes if monday morning came and I hadn't figured it out I started to stress, and to be honest sometimes I just didn't know what the heck to put on the menu so I would sit on pinterest forever trying to figure it out every week. I mark every recipe i'm going to use with post it notes and once I have gone through the cookbooks I'll then go to pinterest and fill in the gaps. I blocked off the middle two weekends because I will be out of town and i wanted to plan freezer meals for my family. A You will need to read labels of ALL foods…from meats, to cheeses, to grains, to spices, to condiments and more!
A This will force you to visit the produce section, meat department, dairy (alternative dairy) and possibly the frozen department. A For example, coconut flour is a great resource for baking and it’s gluten and dairy free. Turns out those indentations on the side of milk cartons are to allow for expanding when the milk is frozen! And it was good that we didn’t have to drive so far and included stores in two days. It is based on a genuine conviction that the way we dress ourselves really matters for the future of our continent.
Every dollar helps, be it $2 for a cup of coffee or $59 for a psychedelic-cat-with-glasses-sweater. I didn’t devote the time necessary to plan our meals, so I would scramble at the last minute trying to figure out what to make for dinner.
I wanted to get as much as possible to ensure we didn’t have to make any runs to the store.


And considering that we bought organic brown rice, low carb tortillas, THM-friendly pasta, olive oil and several other items that are a bit pricier, I think we did pretty good for our first attempt.
I refuse to add these items to my grocery list, simply because they get to be incredibly expensive! I am hoping to be at least every other week shopping by the end of this month, so this gives me great inspiration!
My husband gets paid every two weeks, so I think it makes more sense to break down into two trips, for both space and budgeting reasons. So for instance say I pick fresh tomato basil pasta and pop it into the third thursday of the month, then next thing I do is go through the ingredients add what we don't have to the master grocery list and if it calls for fresh produce (which it does, tomatoes) then I will add the tomatoes to week 3 of the farmers market list. I simply divide the sauce into leftover containers in the proportions needed and freeze them!
We were driving around Thurs and decided since we were so close we got the things that were on sale at Biggs $5 and went to Krogers, $40, but had rewards of $20 to help out and because it was the last day for double coupons.
So that was $87 for “the week?” I found out I bought a couple of things I already had! Yes, this is a bit more aggressive, but I honestly think it will save us more money in the long run.
I went shopping with a very detailed grocery list to ensure that I didn’t buy extras. We also invested in a Brita Pitcher and will get the return in our investment in less than a month. But if I am going to the store for the groceries, I’m fairly decent about not picking up extra things. It has been way too long since I made a detailed list, and didn’t have to go back to the store once or more a week. It saves us so much money and is completely worth the investment, because I can stock up on meat at rock-bottom prices and so many other perishable food deals, too.
A You should be able to divide your shopping list and buy about 75% of what you need at the main store and the other 25% at the specialty store. Gugu and Miss Go are kind of like the Eastern European hyper-stimulated parallel universe versions of Mr.
They both will show you what is worth wearing not only today, and not only tonight, but tomorrow and the age after tomorrow. Let Mr. Well-known producers, too, who once produced better collections, now only use the simplest ideas to make you look stupidly the same.
I’m not kidding when I say that it made me sick to my stomach to look at that figure. I would grab something here and there, or have my husband pick up items I needed on his way home. The price is no different than our local grocery store, so we won’t be spending any extra money for this convenience. I will let you know if I decide to try it and I would love to hear an update at the end of the month. When I was shopping more frequently and with less of a plan, I was definitely spending more! Granted, you may know that your family always drinks x-amount of milk in a week, so then multiply that for the month, you need y-gallons.
The world has gone mad today, and good is bad today, and black is white today, and day is night today.
I also get a lot of produce from my parents throughout the month, and I will likely make one trip this month to our local farmer’s market. Plus, if I shop during the day alone, I have to haul it up stairs into the house by myself.
So sometimes, smaller trips to pick up a few things here and there when I’m in town running other errands and may only have a short amount of time works better. I stopped paying close attention to our expenses since we had a little cushion to fall back on. If it’s something that is going to cost the same no matter what, there is no sense in trying to get it in your major shop, so there are no worries of it going bad! Our budget is currently at $240 a month for my husband myself and a toddler (with baby on the way). It’s a challenge but I love saving our family money in practical ways like these where I can SEE the savings instantly.
