I will make one and only one exception up front though – pictures (photo albums, etc). I’m a big fan of garage sales, and giving things away to charities and second hand stores. Below are some of the general suggestions for decluttering missions and items to not forget to visit in your quest to lighten the load in your home, that didn't really fit into another category. Whether you've done these missions when I've scheduled them during the year, or any other time doesn't really matter to me. Set up a donate (and perhaps a sell) box or bags to serve as a collection station, and then donate or sell regularly to get that stuff out of the house! The best way to keep a home clean and organized is to get rid of the things that you no longer need. Place the sorting pile in a large, clean area so that you can see everything and organize it.
First pile: Pile number one should be the things that you mostly use on a daily basis and the things you "love".
Second pile: Pile number two should include the things that you use at least once a week or once a month. Third pile: Pile number three should include the things that you have not used for at least six months or a year. Try not to do this when you're tired, such as after a day of work, but if you must do so after work, try to do a little bit at a time.
Remember that there is a difference between clutter and items that make up the mood and environment of wherever you are cleaning. If you’ve completely forgot about something after just a month, do you really need it anymore? I just know that if I threw out everything under $100, I’d be left with like 5 things. I really find doing it a little bit at a time is much more effective than the overwhelming feel of having to go through a lot of clutter. If you have made it that long, and you know whether you have used it or not, and the item is not seasonal (winter jacket, boots, etc) then you should go ahead and get rid of it. If you have old clothing, bedding, or linens, but they’re too worn to be reused, ask at your local Salvation Army if they still need them. If you’re ripping out cupboards, getting rid of carpet, changing faucets, or anything like that, you may be able to drop it off at such a store. Ask around about what people involved in missions would like–your clutter may be gold! You can also try churches with clubs groups during the week, or Boys and Girls after school clubs that are always looking for things for the kids to do. Take all the clothes that don't fit or make you look awful, and put them in the sorting pile.

We just went through a move 6 months ago and my husband thanked me for not hauling extra stuff to the new place. If we don’t make time to take care of ourselves, to re-energize and re-vitalize ourselves we make it impossible to do, give or achieve our best. I specifically chose the year period because it allows you to get through all 4 seasons, if you life in such a climate. Just keep these donations separate from the wearable clothing, and be sure to let the Salvation Army know what you’re giving them. After all, do you really need those magazines which you have collected since 1998, but have rarely read? Be sure to give yourself a 15- or 20-minute break as a reward in between hours -- look at email, have a cup of tea, lie down on the couch.
