Using a variety of simple, effective meditation techniques, as well as music and mantra, you will learn how to quiet your mind and enter into a deeper part of your being.  It is in this tranquil inner space that the infinite potential of the human spirit is experienced. There will be a free, four-week continuing meditation course open to those who attend the meditation workshop.
This meditation workshop is part of the Festival of Meditation and Spirituality taking place March 14-20 in Manhattan, presented by the Sri Chinmoy Centre. Every year in September, we organize free meditation classes in all 5 boroughs of New York City as part of Meditation Week NYC. If you would like to attend one of our classes before then, please check our schedules for Manhattan and Queens, where we offer classes more regularly. When people think of meditation they often visualise a remote cave in the Himalayas as the ideal place to meditate.
4 times a year, we offer 2-day free meditation workshops in Manhattan, followed by a 4-week introduction session, and concluding with an in-depth 3-month sessions held in the downtown NoHo (North of Houston) area as a community service to the people of Manhattan.
We offer a modern approach to meditation, combining time-honored techniques with music, mantra and sports and the role of a teacher as well as practical tips on how to establish a daily meditation routine. Meditation classes are given by Sri Chinmoy Centre International members who are seasoned meditation instructors, many of whom have lectured in North and South America, Europe, Africa, Australia and Asia. The newest of the Sri Chinmoy Centres was established in 2008 in downtown Manhattan specifically for NYC residents. The twice-yearly New York area Songs of the Soul concerts feature meditative music composed by Sri Chinmoy.

Life in a hectic city such as Manhattan is so busy and noisy that the atmosphere appears far from conducive to meditation. Sri Chinmoy lived in Queens, New York for over 43 years between 1964, and his mahasamadhi in 2007. When conducted in the right frame of mind, sports infuse the individual with dynamism, enthusiasm and happiness, further enhancing the goals of meditation. Yet, it is because our lives can get so busy and pressured that meditation becomes increasingly important.


Sri Chinmoy was born in India where he studied meditation for many years before travelling to the West and teaching meditation to seekers in the US and over 60 countries worldwide. This a method wherein we calm the mind using proven meditation techniques  in order to enter the spiritual heart. Hence, an athletic practice is the perfect companion to each individual’s meditation practice, or in some instances, becomes the actual meditation itself.
Meditation does not require a retreat from the world, it can be practised in our ordinary everyday lives – no matter where we live.
That is to say, if I have a peaceful moment, even for one second, that peace will come to me as solid strength in my sports, whether I am running or jumping or throwing. That strength is almost indomitable strength, whereas if we are restless, we do not have strength like that. In our inner life if we have the strength of an elephant, then only in our outer life can we be peaceful.
