As Emergency Managers, we preach the importance of exercises and drills to just about anyone that will listen to us.  We must train our muscle memory to use what we will need during times of crisis. In fact, we have trained ourselves so well, that we have become culturally comfortable creating wild scenarios and sharing them with those we are preparing to respond to disasters.
What happens, however, when this results in fake scenarios being shared in real-time media?  What are the risks and possibilities that short exercise messages could be interpreted as real events?  What happens when a fake message ends up being tweeted into a different stream via hashtag and is misunderstood? I recently spoke on this very issue at the #140 Character Conference in Vancouver, Washington. When people are recovering from an addiction, they are seeking ways to restructure their lives with meaningful activity. Besides providing much-needed daily structure, exercise also helps boost a person’s physical health.
The benefits of physical exercise are endless, and will also help boost a person’s self-esteem. One of the hardest parts of addiction recovery is the inevitable mood swings that happen during the recovery. Being active isn’t just important when you’re trying to lose weight – exercising regularly also means you’ll have a decreased risk of heart disease, diabetes, strokes and even some cancers. You might manage to get to the gym three times a week at first, but soon, you’re back to going a couple of times a month at best. That’s because your lifestyle’s changed: you may have kids, a busy job, even a health condition that makes it tough to do certain types of exercise.

Don’t feel that you have to stick to some “perfect” exercise plan from a magazine; instead, find ways to incorporate exercise into your life with as little disruption to your day as possible.
Try starting with just 5 – 10 minutes of cardio activity, and add a little more every week.
Perhaps you’ve got a cold, or you’re really busy at work, or you forgot your exercise kit when you hurried out of the house in the morning.
Perhaps you’d ideally like to do a total of 40 minutes cardio, plus some weight training: but you’ll settle for a minimum of 20 minutes cardio. That could mean writing down brief details of what you did during each session, and how you felt afterwards, or it might simply mean putting a check (or a gold star if you want!) on your calendar. You may also spot patterns emerging: perhaps you find it tough to exercise at the weekends, for instance. If you always use the same cardio machine at the gym and always lift the same weights, you’ll find yourself getting bored.

You may also run into problems if your favorite machine isn’t available, or if you can’t get to the gym at all. As well as stopping you from getting bored, and helping to make your routine flexible, this also ensures that you keep getting fitter (if you do just one type of exercise, your body will eventually adapt to it, and you won’t see such good results). As people get older and settle into hectic lives, usually filled with work and family, physical activity is sometimes left on the backburner.
Physical activity can help someone in addiction recovery reclaim those areas of their life. Whether it’s swimming, walking, or riding a bike, particularly being out in nature gives the individual time to reflect and be alone in one’s thoughts. Physical activity helps give a person a release from stress and anxiety, so it doesn’t keep that up at night. Depending on the person’s personal preferences, joining a class or an exercise group can help keep physical activity fun, and even make some new friends.
However, physical activity should be taken as seriously as eating healthy and getting enough sleep, because of the long-term health benefits it has. They can even find a partner who will help motivate them to stay on track and share the experience with. Combining nature and physical activity is a therapeutic activity that can give a person time to reflect on life. Besides giving structure to a person’s life, exercise also releases chemicals in the brain that heighten positive moods and feelings.
Forming healthy sleeping patterns, can also help a person stay away from situations at night that might otherwise make relapse tempting.
There are many different types of activities, such as yoga, kickboxing, aerobics, and Zumba workouts set to music. By incorporating regular physical activity and sleep, people can help change the negative patterns in their life that had previously led to addiction.
When someone is recovering from addiction, the individual has to be whole physically and spiritually, and physical activity helps to heal the body and mind. Physical activity is an integral part of recovery, and should be built into a person’s everyday schedule.
