In today’s globalized world English is the common language that connects everyone, even within non-English speaking multicultural countries.
There are three core areas you need to work on in order to improve English effectively: vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. Grammar is to language what skeleton is to the body and this is where any journey to learn English must start. Do not feel ashamed to pick up a basic grammar book to brush up your tenses, prepositions and other areas that need improvement.
Pay attention to common errors: its and it’s, your and you’re, compliment and complement are often used incorrectly in sentences.
Check online for English tutorial articles to have specific questions on common errors answered and explained. Inventing words is alright as long as the use is confined to your circle of friends, but don’t start using them elsewhere. Punctuate your sentences when you speak, read and write (even text messages) because these symbols add tone to your written voice. Good vocabulary is important not so you can impress people with flowery words, but so that you can communicate accurately. Consciously abstain from using fillers like ‘you know’, ‘stuff like that’, ‘and all’ in your sentences. Install games like Ruzzle and Scrabbles on your android phone to make learning words more fun. You cannot perfect English only by reading or listening, you must write to seal what you have heard or read. Our minds work through stream of consciousness, and so it’s not unnatural to skip details while writing because the mind is thinking too fast. When writing, never deviate too much from the topic of discussion and always be mindful of your argument. If you are unsure of your English, then run a spelling and grammar check on your documents before sending them across. To learn how to speak English fluently and flawlessly, you must actually speak in English a lot. Follow the subtitles while watching English movies and TV shows to learn the correct pronunciations of words.
After some practice, watch the English shows without subtitles and try to follow whatever is being said on screen. A simple tip to avoid a very common mistake in pronunciation: say “thee” if a word begins with vowel sound or to imply special stress and say ‘the’ otherwise. English words have stressed and unstressed syllables with only one stressed syllable in every word.
Every word counts and every word adds a different value to your sentence, so use words accurately and economically.
And finally, never ever feel small or inferior for not being as good in English as someone else is. Learning English well is really a step by step process: perfect your grammar, build your vocabulary, improve your spelling and avoid errors in pronunciation.
English Improvement Trend & Inevitable Fluency Fluctuations – Why Is It Happening to Me? The only difference between you and others might be that you’re being very conscious of your English fluency problems, whereas others would paraphrase, use small talk phrases and simply not get embarrassed if they get stuck in the middle of a sentence. But if you think that you’re not capable of mastering the aforementioned techniques and you’re doomed for a lifetime of constant struggle with spoken English…you have to understand that any process where a person’s learning and performance is involved is subject to fluctuations. We’re not machines and we can’t guarantee perfect performance at all times, and speaking is no different. I definitely have, but it’s not because I would spend so much time speaking English that I’ve started forgetting my own lingo! Even now, years after dealing with the English fluency issue, I do experience days when I’m a bit slow to respond.
In other words, unless your English fluency is heavily affected and you don’t experience total blackouts when speaking (read a full list of English speech anxiety symptoms here), you’re fine. Anyway, let’s get to the matter of today’s article which is about the English improvement trend. Well, I assume that since you’re reading my blog you’re taking measures to improve your English on a daily basis.
First thing you have to realize is that if you do use English as means of communication regularly, your spoken English improvement trend is always looking up. Side-note: I’m looking at spoken English exclusively on my blog so this wouldn’t be true if you only use English for reading, for instance. If I look at my spoken English level now and two years ago, I can notice a considerable improvement. Next thing – you have to realize that once your English fluency is constantly improving, you have to learn to ignore the inevitable setbacks.
Anyway, probably the most important piece of advice pertains the so called troughs on your actual English fluency graph. And once again allow me to remind you – I’m not talking about severe inability to think and speak English here. You should be fully confident in your ability to speak English and stop wasting your mental power and time on worrying about those troughs – they’re natural part of ANY learning and improvement process. There are basically two approaches you can adapt when experiencing the down moments of your English fluency. But you also risk getting confused even more and I often find that when I struggle to speak clearly, it’s better to slow the speech down. You can even take this acceptance one step further by understanding that you actually LEARN AND IMPROVE during the down stage of your English fluency. Thanks for reading my blog, I really appreciate it and I hope you’ll stick around for more cool content to come in the coming weeks and months! I couldn't learn to speak fluent English for 5 years - read about what I was doing to learn to speak fluently HERE - are YOU in the same situation? Then, one fine day, after years or constant pursuit for English fluency, I realized the key aspect of spoken English improvement – learning English phrases and word combinations instead of studying grammar rules and trying to construct sentences in your head from scratch!

Having good English skills is very important in today’s world and economy and if you live in Dubai, you need to know how to improve your communication skills to help get and keep a job. Improving your communication skills in English is actually very easy to do and these quick tips will help you expand your vocabulary and also find out how to write, speak, read and listen to better English.
It is commonly known that the best way to learn a language is to either live in the country where it is spoken, or to be around speakers of that language as much as possible. Find a local place where you can meet with other English speakers and make note of the words and phrases they use.
Just sitting and learning from a book is nothing compared to meeting and speaking with others or getting one-to-one coaching and training.
This might sound odd – but using songs that are sung in English can help you learn new communication skills and techniques.
You may not like the song you are watching, but looking at how the singers mouth moves will help your communication sound better.
Languages you are used to, such as Arabic, are spoken very fast when you are fluent and the same goes for English too.
Trying to get the words out of your mouth as quickly as possible will only make things worse for the listener. Try to think what you need to say first and then speak slowly and properly and this will make it much easier for you and for the person you are speaking to. If you have access to record your voice (most mobile phones have a feature that will help you do this) then try making a recording and listen to what you sound like.
Practice makes perfect when learning any language and the more you do, the better you will get. You can also watch some English films or TV or listen to the radio (Internet radio is great for this) and then try to discuss the program in English too.
The more you get English communication skills into your life, the easier it will become to learn and master.
So, you go to your English classes and you speak English at work and at home – but this may not be enough to help you learn and get better and better.
You could do something as speaking to a local English company (face-to-face or on the phone) about their services. This first tip is pretty much the same as trying to speak English as often as possible – listening is also just as important. There are many different dialects, slang words and abbreviations used by native English communicators and getting to understand, not master them, is an important way to make you understand what is being said to you. Most people from English speaking countries use their language in a very lazy way – adding extra words and phrases when they are not really needed. As we have already said above in the speaking tips, being surrounded by English as much as possible will help.
Podcasts are one of my favorite ways to help my students with their English listening skills, because it is easy to find Podcasts that are about learning to do something. You might not want to learn how to repair a car engine, but taking note of the instructions and understanding the steps will make sure you are able to be an effective listener.
You can download Podcasts from iTunes – read this guide on how to get them onto your computer.
Once you have finished the conversation, you can try to repeat back to them the key points you understood.
Developing habits is a great way to learn English and writing something, anything, every day is a great way to start. If you are writing every day, there is not much point unless you are going to get someone to make sure that what you are writing in English, makes sense.
You will need to find a way to get your writing checked as often as possible and this might be easier if you have access to the Internet or email. If you can make friends online with a native English speaker, send them an email with your writing in and ask them to check it.
It might be best to start with the friend only pointing out small mistakes, rather than noting every single problem.
A swipe-file, is used in Marketing to keep together examples of advertising that can be referred to when looking for good ideas.
Create your own English language swipe-file and write down new words, phrases or sentences you can use. As I mentioned earlier, English people can be lazy when they speak and this sometimes happens when they write too. In my opinion, using shortened words or text speak, will make you look very unprofessional and might make you look quite silly. These are situations where you must use the correct words at all times, otherwise you risk making your company, organisation and yourself look bad. Let me introduce a very special guest blogger, Lisa Postles, my sister and an excellent speech and language pathologist. People who are working to improve their English conversation skills often want to improve their pronunciation skills as well.
Effective communication being the key to professional success, knowing how to speak English has become more important than ever.
Well, here’s a rule of thumb: locate the subject noun and use the verb that is appropriate for that noun. For example, ‘Good’ and ‘brilliant’ are both positive adjectives, but the degrees of positivity they signify are different. Chances are that more than 50% of the words used will be new to you when you read a poem for the first time. But the reader will find such writing to be disjointed for he is unfamiliar with the context. Knowing how to speak English correctly is just as important as knowing how to read or write it. If confused about the correct pronunciation of a word, shift the stress from one syllable to another until the word sounds right.
It could be a teacher or even a friend but make sure that he himself has his English in place.

If confused about the spelling or the meaning or the usage of a certain word, look it up immediately. The learning never stops but once you’re past the rough initial stage it’s a uniform ascent therefrom.

Why, have you not noticed that you can’t even speak your own language every day at an identical performance level? It’s because of the simple reason I stated above – any human performance is going to have ups and downs. I do have moments of hesitation and inability to put my thoughts into the exact words I would want in English.
And even if you aren’t, there’s always improvement involved as far as you use English in your daily life. As you can see, the overall improvement trend is going upwards, just as we discussed previously in this article. Once you KNOW that after a trough your fluency will go up again, should you really be anxious about your spoken English performance? Well, you may even succeed because speaking fast is one of a number of strategies you can use to get rid of the mental block – I’ve discussed it at length in Step #1 of this article.
You have to go with the flow and if your mind and mouth want to perform somewhat slower today – so be it, don’t try to fight it by all means possible! You pick it up and it’s someone from the office asking you for an update on a specific order.
The better way, as you said, is ACCEPT it, otherwise we got a very bad frustration feelings. Throughout my entire life I’ve always wanted to speak in English fluently, but because of the way English is taught in schools, I always struggled with my spoken English. The use of English, especially for business is taking over the world and you need to make sure you can keep up. You can also practice your English speaking with them too, if you are able to make friends with them. There are various software tools such as Skype, that will allow you to communicate direct face-to-face to practice your communication skills. Using emotion or intonation when you speak English is a great way to make you sound less like you are reading from a book.
You need to experience as much one-on-one communication with another English speaker as possible as this will help you improve your skills faster than anything else.
When you compare this to the way that English speaking training in Dubai is taught, in a very precise way, it can be hard to go out into the real world and follow what people are saying.
Using television and (my favorite) Podcasts to learn listening skills can be very effective and a great way to learn. If you do – ask them to sit and have a break with you for at least 5 minutes and have a conversation with them about their day, their life or about anything. Make it clear that, although you are friends, you will be using them to practice your English skills. This is a good way to learn as it forces you to be formal with your writing style, but also allows you to be creative too. If you are writing in a notebook, you will need to find someone nearby who can help check your use of language and grammar. Ask them to check your spelling and use of words, rather than tell you where you missed a comma. It might be quicker to text this way to a friend, but using it in any other writing is not something you want to do. You definitely do not want to use any abbreviations when creating any English business writing or reports. For those teaching English as a Second or Foreign language in academic settings, this site is an absolute necessity. Further, as irrational as it may sound, the first impressions about ones educational background is formed by the quality of English one uses.
So, “a basket of oranges ‘is’ being brought” since ‘basket’ is the subject noun and it is in singular.
If you can manage to argue in English without erring much then you’re fluent enough already.
Common, you’re not the center of the world; there are millions of others who experience ups and downs of the ability to speak English fluently and effortlessly.
Haven’t you noticed you have days when you just can’t seem to gather your thoughts and express yourself properly even when speaking with your native speaking friends? Even if you don’t make any conscious effort, speaking regularly alone is enough to hard-wire English into your mind stronger and stronger day after day. I believe it’s the same with every foreign English speaker, and you have to agree that it’s nothing extraordinary, right? Of course, given that you regularly engage in spoken English practice; otherwise you won’t see your fluency improving to a great extent and the overall trend will remain flat or may even decline. ACCEPT it as a norm, and you can also comfort yourself with a thought that today’s English fluency trough is yesterday’s peak! You start explaining the issue, but you suddenly mispronounce a couple of words and you feel that something is wrong with the way you speak English. English speakers often say different words and phrases in different ways and songs can be a good way to note this. So instead of “contracts are being awarded to…” I said “contracts are being rewarded to…” A silly mistake, but then – who doesn’t make mistakes? Yes, try to look back on what your spoken English level was a year ago, and you’ll realize that back then you would have probably been happy to speak at the same level you speak today when experiencing somewhat slower and more hesitant speech! So what you have to realize is the following – it’s when you put conscious effort into repeating the sentence correctly that your English improves. As far as your overall English fluency is fit for the purpose – be it doing your job, studying, or socializing – you should not be overly concerned about your odd days when you feel a bit slower to respond.
