I have the pleasure of running into my high school coach every time my team has a meet at Haverford (not to mention my college coach as well!).
Rose (as we all called him), then told me a story about an end-of-season banquet that he held in Chinatown (I had graduated).
Coaching is a process that happens over time.  Since it is a patient driven service, the patient will need to be dedicated, committed and willing to develop themselves. Together the patient and coach will assess the patients strengths and weaknesses and learn how to compensate for those weaknesses and develop personal styles to draw on the patients strengths. The coach can also be very helpful in reminding, encouraging and helping the child to stay focused and on task.
We would suggest a regular, at least weekly, meeting at a regular time slot, for between 30-45 minutes. However there are good shortcuts – where you can find someone who has done something before and ask them how they got there, how they did what they did. If you wanted to improve your tennis groundstrokes, a cricket shot, or a golf swing, you probably wouldn’t hesitate to look at the coaching options would you? After all, who is better to learn from than a qualified, experienced coach in any one of those sports?
A good traffic shortcut relies on someone having been to the destination before (sometimes several times) in order to be able to relay accurately where the best routes are and also importantly, where the pitfalls are. The same applies to coaching – you need to get a coach who has done what you want to do, who has achieved what you want to achieve. You wouldn’t employ a tennis coach to teach you golf, so be specific in your business coaching needs too, and get someone who knows exactly what the route to the success you want is.
This is another massive benefit of the right coach – they make us question our beliefs and see how they impact our actions. One of the first things your coach will do is get you to talk about yourself – where you are now, where you want to be, and why you want what you want. This is hugely insightful…in many cases, people start to look at themselves and realisation dawns on them before the coach has even said much.
However for those people clinging onto to a belief, or way of doing things that is holding them back, this is the point that those beliefs can be challenged.
People hold onto damaging habits or behaviours for all sorts of reasons – often due to fear…fear of the unknown, or fear of what a change may bring. This is one reason why people stay in jobs they hate, rather than leave and do fulfilling work, or start their own businesses.
