Many times I’d make an announcement to my friends that I loved animals too much and was going to try be vegetarian for a year. Whatever the reason, if you’re considering taking the plunge and going vegetarian or just want to take a break from meat and try it out for a while, here are some of my favourite recipes that are delicious and will fill you (because I am still adamant tofu will never fill me like a good old 300g T-bone).

Now, you can add meat to this recipe, but when you do, the magnificent flavors of basil, toasted pine nuts, and garlic as well as the sweet and delicate flavor of the eggplant slices get lost. Adding meat to a recipe like Eggplant Rollatini doesn’t make it better; it only makes it different (and, in my opinion, worse). If you’ve decided to introduce more vegetarian meals into your meal plans this year, don’t fear that you’ll be restricted to bland foods, vegetables or weird tofu-esque meat substitutes. Having said that, there are different types of vegetarians, and depending on how strict you choose to be, your type may reduce the pool of ingredients you have to work with, and possibly, the way you cook them (or not). The two derivatives of this are lacto-vegetarians and ovo-vegetarians, depending on which of the two they choose to include at the exclusion of the other. The word “pescatarian” is occasionally used to describe those who abstain from eating all meat and animal flesh, with the exception of fish.

The macrobiotic diet, revered by some for its healthy and healing qualities, includes unprocessed vegan foods, such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and allows the occasional consumption of fish. It’s unlikely that someone interested in or embarking on a vegetarian diet or lifestyle is going to jump into the deep end before he or she learns to swim through meatless waters. Lastly, I’ll share a wonderful vegetarian recipe I recently created for our Gourmet to Go Department using Potato Gnocchi. Cook packaged potato gnocchi in boiling water approximately 3 to 5 minutes or until it floats.


If you want to become vegetarian just for the sake of being vegetarian, chances are, you won’t make it for a long time.
Since your meat recipes are still fresh on your mind, a great way to turn vegetarian is to cook the same meals but to substitute the meat with non-meat. This is entirely up to you, because some vegetarians eat dairy and eggs while others don’t. The biggest misconception I hear about turning vegetarian is that you automatically become healthy.

I personally know of many vegetarians who are unhealthy because they eat a bunch of vegetarian junk food. If the vegetarian experience starts to become a restrictive experience, then chances are you won’t last long at all. It won’t be long before your collection is boasting 10 to 15 delicious vegetarian recipes. Bottom line, you can keep eating what you love eat, but just choose their meatless alternatives. This is partly because they contain a significant amount of saturated fat relative to soy alternatives. This is also helpful because they will know ahead of time what to cook, if they are inviting you over for instance.
