This beginners’ program combines cardiovascular fitness activities with strength training exercises to help your body build both strength and endurance, as well as prevent injuries. Cardio Walk (CW): During your cardio walks, you will walk at a fast pace, while keeping your arms at chest level and swinging them front to back–just as when running.
Mile (M): As you increase your fitness levels, the distance of your cardio workouts will increase.
Cross Training: Cross is a type of training that incorporates various forms of exercise or a combination of one or more.

Just an FYI, on the pdf download, at the bottom it says CW=Cardio Workout instead of Cardio Walk. Hey printed this off and was looking at it and just wondering how long are you suppose to strength train for on Mondays? It varies between 1 mile and 2 miles weeks one through three as you can see, and then on week 4 and 5 it's 1 mile, including the running. Over the years, I have failed to succeed on far too many exercise programs for one reason or another. So, after taking a few days away from the program, I have had time to think about everything.
By eliminating the walking sessions at week 1, I added an additional week 4 to ease the transition of ramping up the running early on.
Many of us thrive on getting outdoors and breathing fresh air during our workout routines, and there are few outdoor exercises as effective as running.
Know Your Path: A short jog can turn into several more miles than planned with just one wrong turn. Train Your Body: If you have been walking or running on a treadmill prior to venturing outdoors, give your body some time to adjust.
Get More Out of Your Run: When you’re running, your leg muscles are doing a whole lot of work! Now that you have the secrets to a successful outdoor running program, lace up those running shoes and head outside! Be sure to check out our guide to Choosing the Perfect Running Shoes. And print out our sample schedules below to get started on your new adventure!

Strength training sessions are designed to impose increasingly greater resistance, which in turn stimulates development of muscle strength to meet the added demand. Some examples of Cross Training: aerobics, bicycling, brisk walking, jogging, skating, snow skiing, weight lifting, swimming and walking.
This particular program seemed to be set up to succeed, but after a live test run, it had two bad areas in the first 5 weeks alone.
Common sense tells us that yes, we should do some kind of warm up, but in the 5 weeks I did the routine, I did not once warm up once. I start a new job on Monday, and although I will still be running in the mornings before work, I will not have time to blog about my progress.
That way we will know what settings to use to get the proper pace to make the 20 minutes, etc.
I’d really love to be a part of community where I can get opinions from other knowledgeable individuals that share the same interest. Running outside can be a lot more challenging for the body without the momentum of the treadmill propelling you forward. As your body gets used to this new exercise, you can decrease the amount of time you walk and increase the amount of time you jog. Our Running Program for Beginners will help you take baby steps toward reaching your goals. By starting out with a fast-paced walk, you’ll allow your body the time it needs to adapt to your new fitness routine. I ran the half marathon distance on schedule but there was not a half marathon race close but I kept up the running during the week as well as on the weekends. The original plan was great in it’s own sense, but after 5 weeks of following the program, I found a number of ways to improve upon it to avoid failure. And even though I had only progressed through week 5, I feel I can anticipate where there might be problems in the remaining weeks. I found that i was dreading running again so quickly, and even an additional 30 seconds could make the difference here.
Our guide to starting an outdoor running program combines useful tools to train your body, ease into your program, and strength train your muscles for a productive, injury-free running regimen that will ramp up your cardiovascular fitness, blast fat, and tone your body.

Your muscles are going to be working harder, more muscles will be recruited, and your joints take on the extra stress of hitting uneven surfaces.
On days when you are taking a break from running, do some strength-training exercises to keep your body in shape. The beginner’s running program, below, is  designed for those with absolutely no running experience.
Also, the original pace for this routine was EVERY OTHER DAY, but I think making it 4 days a week might be better. To prepare your body for this change, take the last few weeks of cool weather to train on the treadmill. Strengthening the muscles around the joints that are doing all of the work during your runs will keep you safe from injury.
Plan a route that you are familiar with and that you know other walkers and runners will be populating. For your first couple of runs, simply walk out your front door and get yourself 10 minutes away from your house. Once you get the go-ahead to start the program, pull that hair back, lace up those shoes, and let’s get started! If you find the revised week 1 too hard, simply don’t start this routine for a week and walk a week first. Try this Tough Tread Interval Run to get your body used to the outdoors before actually heading out. Once you’ve mastered that workout, incorporate these 5 go-to moves into your days off for a strong body and great run! Once you are outside, keep your first few runs on the shorter side to give your body time to adjust. Although the ramp-up there didn’t seem harsh on paper, when I transitioned myself on the track I realized it was either too quick or I was a wimp. I am not going to discount the second theory there, but as I can make changes to the program, I will do that instead of putting a label on myself.
