On Saturday, Chrissie, Jess and myself visited Pick Me Up contemporary graphic arts fair at Somerset House. I was very excited about visiting this exhibition as last year I intended to go, but was unable to, so this year I put extra effort into attending, and made sure I booked my ticket a good week in advance just to be sure. Some of the highlights for me were seeing work from Jessica Hische, Tom Gauld, Andy Rementer and Robbies Brown Shoes, all of which have different styles and approaches to their work, and it appeals to me in different ways.
Tom Gauld is a cartoonist and illustrator who’s work I have been a fan of for a long time as it never fails to put a smile on my face.
I am quite new to Andy Rementer‘s work, I recently saw some on a blog I reguarly visit and instantly fell in love with his quirky sense of humor and fun illustrative style. A good friend of mine pointed me in the direction of Robbies Brown Shoes work as it turned out he is a fellow North Devon chap himself. All in all we had an amazing time working our way through the different areas of Somerset House, discovering charming new work and stumbling across work we were familiar with and loved.


Here kitty, kitty: Playing with my cats or just watching them get up to crazy stuff is a great pick-me-up. With the best new work from around the United Kingdom being showcased, both prints and original works are available for purchase from just ?10. I was familiar with a few pieces of his work already, but it was great to see his prints in person.
There is nothing more relaxing and mindful than watching the ocean and hearing the sound of the waves.
I still maintain that my kitties {along with the gym} helped me cope with my break-up last year. His spoof celebrity illustrations really humored me at the exhibition, especially his Andi Peters print.
I always have a bottle {or 6} of red wine at home and I have a glass or two at the end of the week to just melt away stress in general.
Like most normal people, I have my down days, my anxious days, my frustrating days and well, my stressful days.
So yes, even if I feel flat after dark, I can pop in my car and head down to the beach and either walk along the esplanade or sit on the sand mesmerised by the sights and sounds around me. Generally this works best in the car because that way I’m not disturbing flatmates or neighbours nor am I scaring the cats! FRIENDS in particular is my feel-good show and it’s like having your own friends around.


It’s like they know when I feel like shit and will just quietly curl up on my feet or my stomach.
However, there have been times when I have felt shitty after a day at work and will have a glass mid-week.
Sure, the problem doesn’t go away but the mood is a whole lot better and I feel fitter. The only thing is, I need to choose this option wisely given that the books I tend to read can in fact be emotionally draining.
Even if we are all psychologists, it’s not the time to get into problem-solving mode necessarily.
Yeah, not recommended {The book is highly recommended though…just not when you are going through a difficult time!}. But if it’s fantasy {Harry Potter, anyone?} or just a light read, I find it quite relaxing and uplifting.
