I first saw this presented back in 2012 when Raphael Brandon delivered an excellent keynote at the 2012 UKSCA national conference. Back in 2011 I wrote a piece for Leaders in Performance about innovation in strength and conditioning. Once you’ve tested your innovations and checked they work you can roll them out and start using them properly.
The final stage is polishing the programme and making small tweaks here and there based on what you’ve seen from ongoing monitoring and testing and how your athlete is responding to the training programme. So whether you are working on a 4-year plan or putting together a 6-month training programme, keep in mind the  4-steps to success. From yesterday’s Writing Tip, you learned 10 ways to find content for your business blog. Many people try to do everything in one step – plan, create the content, post it, etc. Set aside an hour or so on Sunday evening or Monday morning to plan your content for the week. Once you know the content you will need to create for the week, the next step is to turn your plan into an actual schedule to get the content created. Once you’ve planned your content and made a schedule for creating that content, the next logical step is to simply follow your schedule and create your content. Follow these 4 steps and you’ll soon find it much easier to create quality content that serves your target market and builds your business. 5-Module E-course to Jumpstart Your Writing Career! This e-course will help you develop a focus for your career based on your education, background, and experience so you create a writing career you'll really love.
As a business owner I have found that the biggest challenge for me personally is how to balance quality of life with quality of business.
Go through every business process and write out the steps currently needed to complete a task. Deduct additional employee items such as retirement and savings plans, health insurance, charitable contributions or garnishments, if applicable. Enter amount of check, date, employee name, and any additional notes into accounting program manually.
Now that we had documented the process, it was easier to see what steps could be improved or eliminated to consume fewer resources and complete tasks more efficiently. Enter in gross hours for each employee into payroll system, which automatically adjusted for various pay rates, withholdings, Federal Income Tax, Social Security Taxes, Medicare, state and local taxes, and any additional deductions per employee as applicable.
Enter check number, amount, date, employee name, and any additional notes into business’ accounting program manually. I’ve always tried to automate as much of my own companies’ processes as possible, and so this was right up my alley. We created a software program that tied our scheduler and digital employee timekeeper directly into our outsourced payroll program. Now what we did is an example of extreme automation – like I said, this is what we do – but there are modifications on this theme that any business owner can do for themselves.
Business inputs outside of your company’s control change over time, and manual and automated processes should be upgraded regularly (we do a yearly automation audit) to maintain maximum efficiency. As more and more businesses incorporate technology, the really exciting ability to conduct business through automation will become widespread. Dan Abbate is the owner of several companies and has bought and sold countless others that use automation to reduce costs and increase efficiency. Are the current problems things that can only be addressed by a large group rather than a small collaboration or task force? As business owners and managers who are ‘long on work and short on time’ it’s important that we are able to identify the performance objectives that will have the greatest impact on employee and business performance. Now make a list for each one of your employees and delete any attribute the employee is already demonstrating to the standard you are satisfied with. You should now be left with the list of he attributes your employees are NOT currently demonstrating. Lack of clarity on expectations is the single most important reason why employees don’t perform to the standard their managers require.

DonorsChoose.org helps people like you help teachers fund their classroom projects, from art supplies to books to calculators. Once you have captured your audiencea€™s attention, ita€™s important to make the rest of your introduction interesting, and use it to lay out the rest of the speech.
After the attention-getter, the second major part of an introduction is called the link to topic. Leta€™s look at the first anecdote example to demonstrate how we could go from the attention-getter to the topic. In July 2009, a high school girl named Alexa Longueira was walking along a main boulevard near her home on Staten Island, New York, typing in a message on her cell phone. In this example, the third sentence here explains that the attention-getter was an anecdote that illustrates a real issue. The ancient Greek writer Aesop told a fable about a boy who put his hand into a pitcher of filberts.
In this example, we added three new sentences to the attention-getter to connect it to the speech topic. Once you have linked an attention-getter to the topic of your speech, you need to explain to your audience why your topic is important. The next part of a speech is not so much a specific a€?parta€? as an important characteristic that needs to be pervasive throughout your introduction and your entire speech.
First, to make yourself appear competent, you can either clearly explain to your audience why you are competent about a given subject or demonstrate your competence by showing that you have thoroughly researched a topic by including relevant references within your introduction. If, on the other hand, you are not actually a recognized expert on a topic, you need to demonstrate that you have done your homework to become more knowledgeable than your audience about your topic.
The second characteristic of credibility, trustworthiness, is a little more complicated than competence, for it ultimately relies on audience perceptions.
Today Ia€™m going to talk about why I believe we should enforce stricter immigration laws in the United States.
While clearly not all audience members will be open or receptive to opening their minds and listening to your arguments, by establishing that there is known disagreement, you are telling the audience that you understand their possible views and are not trying to attack their intellect or their opinions.
A thesis statementA short, declarative sentence that states the purpose, intent, or main idea of a speech.
A thesis statement helps your audience by letting them know a€?in a nutshella€? what you are going to talk about.
The weak statement will probably give the impression that you have no clear position about your topic because you havena€™t said what that position is.
The strong statement not only specifies plagiarism but also states your specific concern (loss of creative learning interaction).
A thesis statement should appear, almost verbatim, toward the end of the introduction to a speech.
When your thesis statement is sufficiently clear and decisive, you will know where you stand about your topic and where you intend to go with your speech. Leta€™s say you have a fairly strong thesis statement, and that youa€™ve already brainstormed a list of information that you know about the topic. If you begin your research with only a general topic in mind, you run the risk of spending hours reading mountains of excellent literature about your topic. While this statement may be true, you could find industrial, medical, insurance literature that can drone on ad infinitum about the details of all such accidents in just one year. Three factors contribute to most accidents involving drivers over fifty-five years of age: failing eyesight, slower reflexes, and rapidly changing traffic conditions. Mature drivers over fifty-five years of age must cope with more challenging driving conditions than existed only one generation ago: more traffic moving at higher speeds, the increased imperative for quick driving decisions, and rapidly changing ramp and cloverleaf systems. Second, the framing of the thesis provides you with a way to describe the specific changes as they have occurred between, say, 1970 and 2010. When your thesis is not clear to you, your listeners will be even more clueless than you area€”but if you have a good clear thesis statement, your speech becomes clear to your listeners. Now that wea€™ve looked at why a thesis statement is crucial in a speech, leta€™s switch gears and talk about how we go about writing a solid thesis statement. The first step in writing a good thesis statement was originally discussed in Chapter 6 "Finding a Purpose and Selecting a Topic" when we discussed how to find topics. One of the hardest parts of writing a thesis statement is narrowing a speech from a broad topic to one that can be easily covered during a five- to ten-minute speech. The second question to ask yourself when narrowing a topic is whether your speecha€™s topic is one clear topic or multiple topics.
The last question a speaker should ask when making sure a topic is sufficiently narrow is whether the topic has direction. Once youa€™ve narrowed your topic to something that is reasonably manageable given the constraints placed on your speech, you can then formalize that topic as a complete sentence.
On the other hand, if your topic is persuasive, you want to make sure that your argument, viewpoint, or opinion is clearly indicated within the thesis statement.
Once you have written a first draft of your thesis statement, youa€™re probably going to end up revising your thesis statement a number of times prior to delivering your actual speech. Can you adequately cover the topic indicated in your thesis within the time you have for your speech? Does your thesis statement clearly indicate what your audience should do, how your audience should think, or how your audience should feel?

The final part of an introduction contains a preview of the major points to be covered within your speech.
Linking the attention-getter to the speech topic is essential so that you maintain audience attention and so that the relevance of the attention-getter is clear to your audience. Establishing how your speech topic is relevant and important shows the audience why they should listen to your speech. A clear thesis statement is essential to provide structure for a speaker and clarity for an audience. An effective preview identifies the specific main points that will be present in the speech body.
Make a list of the attention-getting devices you might use to give a speech on the importance of recycling. Discuss with a partner three possible body points you could utilize for the speech on the topic of volunteerism.
Fill out the introduction worksheet to help work through your introduction for your next speech.
While being on the job search is a daunting task for most, it’s important to enjoy the process.
I like the logic and whilst he used this to illustrate how he approached working with an athlete over a 4-year Olympic Cycle, I think the steps can also be used over shorter time frames when putting together training programmes. Dan John talks about testing out new training ideas in his book, Never Let Go (well worth a read).
Decide what topics you will blog about, for example, and what information needs to be in your newsletter or other emails that you will send to the people on your mailing list. For example, if you plan the content for 2 blog posts each week during step 1, the next step is to schedule time to write these 2 posts.
With all the planning out of the way for the week, and a specific time scheduled for creating your content, you’ll be able to create that content rather quickly. I don’t even remember what it was – a report perhaps, or maybe just answering emails, either way I was deep in the paradox that is modern technology: the benefit of being able to work from anywhere means… we do! We are fortunate to have the flexibility to spend more time with family and friends doing the things that make us happy, but the difficulty is how to enjoy this time without distraction or worry. Any task or process in a business that is repetitive can be automated through the use of technology; furthermore, it SHOULD be automated. The only way to really make this effective, was to automate it – in other words, ‘teach’ a computer to complete as much of the task as possible, independent of human oversight (surprisingly, most business processes can be fully or almost fully automated using today’s technology). The initial schedule was entered into the computer by a human and of course employees “punched” the clock as expected, but when it came time for payroll, employee wage information was automatically calculated via the system data and uploaded to the payroll program on a pre-determined schedule, in our case, every second Monday.
One of the things I have found, however, is that you have to be wary of too many stand-alone systems.
The little bit of time and money spent to keep all business processes efficient pays 10 fold (or more!) year over year. His most recent business, Robotaton Corp, automates company-wide business processes for mid-market companies.
Since one of the goals of a community partnership is to meet on a regular basis to strategize and implement, you want to recruit people that are open and available to meeting in person.
People who want to build a business they can retire with versus those that want to get in, build profits and get out quickly will likely lean toward different industries and terms.  Knowing where you stand before you entertain the variety of franchise possibilities will help keep you clear and focused.
Applying your target demographic research to traffic, visibility and accessibility will serve your efforts well.  By putting carefully thought and considerate efforts in now, you will position yourself in a favorable footing for franchise success. Here’s an approach for ensuring that, when it comes to objectives, you are getting the best bang for your buck! If you still have ‘Meets targets’ on your list, have you specifically described those targets? This is why writing and agreeing performance objectives for these ‘attributes’ are so vital when you are seeking to improve employee performance. See the license for more details, but that basically means you can share this book as long as you credit the author (but see below), don't make money from it, and do make it available to everyone else under the same terms.
However, the publisher has asked for the customary Creative Commons attribution to the original publisher, authors, title, and book URI to be removed. In this section, we are going to explore the five remaining parts of an effective introduction: linking to your topic, reasons to listen, stating credibility, thesis statement, and preview.
The link to topic is the shortest part of an introduction and occurs when a speaker demonstrates how an attention-getting device relates to the topic of a speech. Not paying attention to the world around her, she took a step and fell right into an open manhole. We call this the a€?why should I care?a€? part of your speech because it tells your audience why the topic is directly important to them.
The first method of demonstrating competencea€”saying it directlya€”is only effective if you are actually a competent person on a given subject. The easiest way to demonstrate your competence is through the use of appropriate references from leading thinkers and researchers on your topic. One way to increase the likelihood that a speaker will be perceived as trustworthy is to use reputable sources. While some unethical speakers can attempt to manipulate an audiencea€™s perception that the speaker cares, ethical speakers truly do care about their audiences and have their audiencea€™s best interests in mind while speaking. With a good thesis statement you will fulfill four basic functions: you express your specific purpose, provide a way to organize your main points, make your research more effective, and enhance your delivery. Additionally, the term a€?academic cheatinga€? can refer to many behaviorsa€”acquiring test questions ahead of time, copying answers, changing grades, or allowing others to do your courseworka€”so the specific topic of the speech is still not clear to the audience. A thesis statement helps the audience get ready to listen to the arrangement of points that follow. Having a clear thesis statement is especially important if you know a great deal about your topic or you have strong feelings about it.
Instead, focusing your thesis statement will help you narrow the scope of information you will be searching for while gathering information. This thesis statement at least provides three possible main points and some keywords for your electronic catalog search. Because of these challenges, I want my audience to believe that drivers over the age of sixty-five should be required to pass a driving test every five years.
First, several terms need to be defined, and these definitions might function surprisingly well in setting the tone of the speech. When you stand in front of your audience presenting your introduction, you can vocally emphasize the essence of your speech, expressed as your thesis statement.
A thesis statement is related to the general and specific purposes of a speech as we discussed them in Chapter 6 "Finding a Purpose and Selecting a Topic".
Once you have a general topic, you are ready to go to the second step of creating a thesis statement. While five to ten minutes may sound like a long time to new public speakers, the time flies by very quickly when you are speaking.
An overgeneralization occurs when we classify everyone in a specific group as having a specific characteristic.
If your basic topic is too broad, you will never have a solid thesis statement or a coherent speech.
If your topic is informative, your job is to make sure that the thesis statement is nonargumentative and focuses on facts. If you are going to argue that Barack Obama is a great speaker, then you should set up this argument within your thesis statement. Ia€™m sure wea€™ve all seen signs that have three cities listed on them with the mileage to reach each city.
Make sure that your thesis statement is narrow enough to be adequately covered in a five- to six-minute speech. Planning ahead like this each week can save time when it comes to creating your content because you won’t have to spend time wondering what to write about or otherwise create as content when you get to Step 3 of this process.
If you need to send out a newsletter, then schedule time to create the content for it as well.
You won’t have to waste precious writing time trying to figure out what to write about. For example, during this step, when you post to your blog, send an email to those on your mailing list with the headline of your post, a short paragraph describing the post, and a link to the post itself. Allowing tasks to be performed by automation increases efficiency and reduces costs by shrinking payroll and related overhead (if you have less human labor inputs, you also don’t need as much office space, benefits programs, payroll taxes, electricity, etc). For instance, we were gathering information from a multitude of sources to determine payable hours – that could be optimized to determine which of our sources would be the “bible”, in this case it was the scheduled hours as they appeared in the computer portal (information available to all employees).
There are a number of ways to approach this: you can find a free online source, you can get an in-house developer to make something, or you can outsource this to a professional company to create a complete company-wide automation system (this is what my company, Robotaton, does).
Information was simultaneously fed directly into our accounting package so everything tallied up correctly.
It’s important that any automation you implement makes your life easier, not more difficult.
Robotaton focuses on event-driven automation, meaning computers talk directly to other computers to accomplish day-to-day repetitive tasks with little to no human intervention. Partners should work and live in the targeted area; be interested in working with a diverse group and familiar with some of the roles and responsibilities that come from joining your partnership. Once you have your list of people that are interested in your idea, have the group meet informally to discuss your idea further.
You may also download a PDF copy of this book (61 MB) or just this chapter (3 MB), suitable for printing or most e-readers, or a .zip file containing this book's HTML files (for use in a web browser offline). But when he tried to pull them out, his hand wouldna€™t fit through the neck of the pitcher because he was grasping so many filberts.
Sometimes you can include the significance of your topic in the same sentence as your link to the topic, but other times you may need to spell out in one or two sentences why your specific topic is important.
Imagine sitting through a speech about a new software package you dona€™t own and you will never hear of again.
As mentioned earlier in this chapter, credibility is ultimately a perception that is made by your audience.

If you are an undergraduate student and you are delivering a speech about the importance of string theory in physics, unless you are a prodigy of some kind, you are probably not a recognized expert on the subject. When you demonstrate to your audience that you have done your homework, they are more likely to view you as competent.
Often speakers must speak in front of audiences that may be hostile toward the speakera€™s message.
I used to believe that open immigration was a necessity for the United States to survive and thrive, but after researching this topic, Ia€™ve changed my mind. A strong, clear thesis statement is very valuable within an introduction because it lays out the basic goal of the entire speech. Many speakers say that if they can create a strong thesis sentence, the rest of the speech tends to develop with relative ease. If this is the case for you, you need to know exactly what you are planning on talking about in order to fit within specified time limitations.
Using your thesis statement, you can select only the information that (1) is directly related to the thesis and (2) can be arranged in a sequence that will make sense to the audience and will support the thesis. You may have little or no idea of how to tie your research all together, or even whether you should tie it together. Your definitions of words like a€?generation,a€? a€?quick driving decisions,a€? and a€?cloverleaf systemsa€? could jolt your audience out of assumptions they have taken for granted as truth.
Many speakers pause for a half second, lower their vocal pitch slightly, slow down a little, and deliberately present the thesis statement, the one sentence that encapsulates its purpose. For example, a speakera€™s thesis statement that a€?all members of the National Council of La Raza are militanta€? is an overgeneralization of all members of the organization. For example, if you start off with the topic a€?Barack Obama is a role model for everyone,a€? what do you mean by this statement?
As your speech develops, often your thesis will need to be rewritten to whatever direction the speech itself has taken. Not necessarily what I would consider to be an  innovative idea but for this support team it’s been a revelation! This not only gives you content for your newsletter or other emails, it also helps drive traffic to your blog. We eat a cold dinner, alone, while everyone else goes outside for a golf cart ride (hey – I live in Florida, it’s a perk J ) because we couldn’t step away in a timely manner. We also went with a payroll system that was directly tied into our business bank account which automatically calculated withholdings, optimizing several steps into one.
Direct deposits were created, and email and text notifications were sent automatically to employees alerting them to the payroll dispersal. If you have one system to automate this and another system to automate that, at some point you will be creating more work for yourself.
Make a contact list of namesthat you can call to discuss your idea and find out if they have a similar viewpoint and would be willing to listen to your idea. For example, if you look at the attention-getting device example under historical reference above, youa€™ll see that the first sentence brings up the history of the Vietnam War and then shows us how that war can help us understand the Iraq War. We are so wired into our technology that we forget to see whata€™s going on around usa€”like a big hole in front of us.
Instead of dropping some of them so that his hand would fit, he burst into tears and cried about his predicament. Conversely, if your number one hobby in life is collecting memorabilia about the Three Stooges, then you may be an expert about the Three Stooges.
In these cases, it is very important for the speaker to explain that he or she really does believe her or his message is in the audiencea€™s best interest. While I may not change all of your minds today, I do ask that you listen with an open mind, set your personal feelings on this topic aside, and judge my arguments on their merits.
We strongly believe that it is worthwhile to invest some time in framing and writing a good thesis statement. On the other hand, when the thesis statement is not very clear, creating a speech is an uphill battle.
Knowing where you are and where you are going is the entire point in establishing a thesis statement; it makes your speech much easier to prepare and to present. In essence, a strong thesis statement helps you keep useful information and weed out less useful information. If, on the other hand, you conduct your research with a clear thesis statement in mind, you will be better able to zero in only on material that directly relates to your chosen thesis statement. What is a a€?cloverleaf,a€? and how does any driver deal cognitively with exiting in the direction seemingly opposite to the desired one?
When this is done effectively, the purpose, intent, or main idea of a speech is driven home for an audience.
To ascertain if your topic is narrow enough for a specific time frame, ask yourself three questions. Furthermore, a speaker would have to correctly demonstrate that all members of the organization are militant for the thesis statement to be proven, which is a very difficult task since the National Council of La Raza consists of millions of Hispanic Americans. For informative speeches, the goal of a thesis statement is to explain what the speech will be informing the audience about, not attempting to add the speakera€™s opinion about the speecha€™s topic. We often start with a speech going in one direction, and find out through our research that we should have gone in a different direction. You’ll know exactly when to create that content, too, because you have a schedule (Step 2).
You can also alter your blog posts by about 20% then submit these posts to online article directories for article marketing purposes. Furthermore, an automated or semi-automated workforce gives a business a competitive advantage and decreases stress and worry related to daily activities.
Additionally, we saved time and effort on manually filling out and printing checks by encouraging direct deposit for most employees.
The platform we built bridges the gap between the various programs we use, eliminating the need for a person to manually transfer info between programs and initiate the payroll process. All systems should work together, under one ‘umbrella’ so your data and processes work across platforms and are readily accessible throughout all departments.
Dan is a member of Vistage Florida, Rotary International and Entrepreneurs’ Organization.
However, you would need to explain to your audience your passion for collecting Three Stooges memorabilia and how this has made you an expert on the topic. You may even want to write your thesis statement before you even begin conducting research for your speech.
Questions like this, suggested by your own thesis statement, can lead to a strong, memorable speech. Going forward, every payroll period the system automatically calculates and completes the payroll process without direct human oversight. However, some attention-getters need further explanation to get to the topic of the speech.
Obviously, this particular speaker didna€™t do a great job of analyzing her or his audience if the audience isna€™t going to use the software packagea€”but even when speaking on a topic that is highly relevant to the audience, speakers often totally forget to explain how and why it is important.
As speakers we can easily manipulate our sources into appearing more credible than they actually are, which would be unethical.
While you may end up rewriting your thesis statement later, having a clear idea of your purpose, intent, or main idea before you start searching for research will help you focus on the most appropriate material. For example, to preview a speech on bullying in the workplace, one could say, a€?To understand the nature of bullying in the modern workplace, I will first define what workplace bullying is and the types of bullying, I will then discuss the common characteristics of both workplace bullies and their targets, and lastly, I will explore some possible solutions to workplace bullying.a€? In this case, each of the phrases mentioned in the preview would be a single distinct point made in the speech itself.
While I don’t recommend giving up on job boards altogether, I definitely feel networking is the best way to use your time wisely during your job search. Of course, there are fail-safes built right in – so a human does gets a notification if anything looks odd or out of place.
We are constantly trying to grab so much or do so much that it prevents us from accomplishing our goals. When you are honest about your sources with your audience, they will trust you and your information more so than when you are ambiguous.
To help us understand thesis statements, we will first explore their basic functions and then discuss how to write a thesis statement. I would like to show you three simple techniques to manage your time so that you dona€™t try to pull too many filberts from your pitcher. Not only is lying highly unethical, but if you are caught lying, your audience will deem you untrustworthy and perceive everything you are saying as untrustworthy.
Many speakers have attempted to lie to an audience because it will serve their own purposes or even because they believe their message is in their audiencea€™s best interest, but lying is one of the fastest ways to turn off an audience and get them to distrust both the speaker and the message.
Stay abreast of industry news (read a lot), and hopefully you took copious notes on the back of your contacts’ business cards. Taking copious notes on everything from jargon to business will help you create a more personalized and tailored follow-up e-mail. A great idea would be to leverage your digital technology skills in these e-mail correspondences. For example, if you find an article, podcast, or video you think might interest your contacts, make sure you send it their way.
This is a great opportunity to keep yourself fresh in their minds, and again, you will be adding value to the relationship! For example, people love talking about themselves and one icebreaker is to ask how the individual got started in their career. Demonstrating research with pertinent and customized questions will impress your contact because you went through such lengths to learn about him or her. This gesture will reflect well on your part, and will almost certainly persuade your contact to continue building the relationship.
