This is the whole oat without the hull, toasted and cleaned, before it has been cut or rolled.
Also known as Irish oats, are groats that are cut into two to four pieces with a sharp, steel blade. They are similar to old-fashioned oats except that the groat is steamed longer and rolled thinner. Instant oatmeal is steamed longer and rolled thinner than even quick-cooking oats, and then dehydrated.
Nutrition: 1 packet has 100 calories, 19 gm carbohydrate, 4 gm protein, and 3 gm fiber, and 75 mg sodium.
All oats, with the exception of flavored and sweetened instant oats, have a relatively low glycemic index. Choosing which variety of oats to use comes down to personal preferences and how you plan to use them.
July 21, 2015 by Julie 33 Comments These Easy Watermelon Pineapple Popsicles are refreshing, delicious and only require three ingredients! Blend watermelon, pineapple and fresh mint together for a summertime treat that’s healthy, perfectly cold and slightly sweet! If you’ve popped by PBF over the course of the past few weeks, you’re probably well aware of my ongoing love affair with watermelon.
It’s borderline ridiculous because I truly feel like at this point in my life I could happily exist on watermelon alone. Plus, watermelon is in season right now and always seems to be on sale at the grocery store, so I’ve been adding it to my grocery cart for months and eating my way through an embarrassing number of melons during my pregnancy. I used watermelon as the base for some simple three-ingredient popsicles that I made over the weekend and Ryan and I could not get enough of them.
I simply blended watermelon, frozen pineapple and mint leaves together (there’s no need for additional liquid thanks the amount of juice that comes out of the melon!), poured the mixture in popsicle molds and forced myself to wait until they were completely frozen to dig in. The result was a sweet, refreshing summertime treat that Ryan and I both absolutely adored. If you decide to give this recipe a try, I hope the popsicles cool you down and make you smile on a hot summer night!

Watermelon and pineapple are definitely two of my favorite summer fruits so these Popsicles look so amazing and refreshing and easy to make! I am definitely going to make these soon – it’s been so hot here, and these look so refreshing!
With your watermelon obsession in full-force I think you would love this recipe for a watermelon frosty! They cook quicker than steel-cut oats, and you will get a creamier texture while keeping the nutty flavor. This is the most processed form of oats and it often contains added sugars, salt, and other additives.

Not Quite Amish is a community blog for those who love Amish communities, simple living, vintage style, and have a desire to be in growing relationships with friends, family, and God. I am now on a mission to make watermelon popsicles with a variety of fruit flavors by swapping out the pineapple for everything from frozen strawberries or blackberries to mangos or peaches! I’ve been all about both watermelon AND pineapple the last month or two so these are right up my alley.
But if you wander through the breakfast aisle in any grocery store, you’ll find numerous choices when it comes to oatmeal: steel-cut oats, Scottish oats, old-fashioned oats, quick oats, instant oatmeal, and even quick-cooking steel-cut oats.
While not usually used for baked goods, they work well for cooked cereals, and are well suited for overnight cooking in the slow cooker. Eating foods with a low glycemic index is thought to help keep blood sugar stabilized as well as keep you feeling full for a longer period of time. I had gotten a huge watermelon and it ended up giving us three huge containers, and I ended up freezing the chunks since they were close to turning bad and I didn’t want to waste it all.
I’m 35 weeks pregnant now and like you, can’t get enough of watermelon and other juicy fruit!! They work well for cooked cereals or a variety of baked goods, like muffins, granola bars, cookies, or breads.
Because they are processed less, steel-cut oats will likely keep you feeling full longer than their quick or instant counterparts.
Every month we'll also highlight like-minded guests—some high-profile, some new voices, but all fabulous! I’m convinced there’s nothing better than cold watermelon when it feels like it’s 1,000 degrees outside (which it does, yet again, in Charlotte this week). I hope you enjoy little glimpses into my life and have fun trying the sweaty workouts I frequently share and making some of my favorite recipes along the way!
I tried blending frozen watermelon, frozen strawberries, mint, and lime together with a few splashes of water and almond milk to get it all moving and then ate it with a spoon from a glass like ice cream.
Overnight oats are a quick and easy way to provide a hot, filling, and nutritious breakfast the next morning. There is less in the packet than if you had made oatmeal from scratch with one of the other varieties. Most kinds of oats have anywhere from 140 to 170 calories, 23 to 29 gm carbohydrate, 4-7 gm of protein, and 3-5 gm of fiber. If you like the instant variety of oats, be sure to choose plain varieties as the flavored ones usually contain added sugar, sodium, and other additives.
