A very clear picture of a feline oral resorptive lesion and periodontal disease plus gingivitis.
A feline oral resorptive lesion (FOTL) is damage to the tooth itself in which at the least serious end of the spectrum involves the enamel being "barely" penetrated to loss of the "entire crown" of the tooth in the more serious cases1. Twenty-eight to sixty-seven percent of adult cats suffer from feline oral resorptive lesions1. Siamese and Abyssinian cats (purebred cats - these are very popular cat breeds) are, it seems, predisposed to this oral health problem. Alpo used to have a very large marketing campaign and was basically synonymous with dog food.
Looking at the food, it’s hard to understand just how this could be sold as real food for dogs.
Very cheap grain including corn and soybeans, very poor animal protein sources, by-products, brewers rice, salt is way too high.
It would seem that dogs are primarily carnivores so I don’t understand how a grain could hold a lot of nutritional value, be a quality or preferable protein source, or be that essential to a diet for all dogs. If you’re looking for reference material I recommend one of the many good books on canine nutrition. I’ve been reading up on this for 4 years now and corn in dog food has been highly frowned upon.
Although some grains may have some nutritional value, many contain inflammatory glutens, and also microtoxins. For anyone switching over from high filler dog foods let me tell you from first hand experience that your pet will eat less of the new food than the high filler food.

Standard source of zinc, protects against free radicals, essential to insulin formation and immune function. Used to cover up rancid meat and fat, can cause kidney and heart disease, hypertension — used to encourage cats to drink, source of sodium chloride.

Standard source of Vitamin B2, necessary to energy production, fat and carbohydrate metabolism.
Standard source, immune stimulant, major factor in protein metabolism and red blood cell production. Manganese is necessary to development of strong bones and enzyme activators, enhances immune system. Many cat owners prefer to make their own cat litter, rather than buy the commercial varieties available at the store.
For instance, ground corn is the top ingredient, which is known to be difficult to digest and not nutritious for dogs. We have more by-products, and then brewers rice (another cheap addition with limited value). I have given my dog different brands of food because sometimes is just convenient and in my opinion nutritious as well.
The more expensive like acana and performatrin ultra and blue buffalo my one blisters and looses his hair but is perfect on alpo and ol’roy so what ever yu feel fills yur dogs needs I say feed him it. Since I am a lay-person without any professional training, I would love to expand my knowledge so if you could cite or provide links to reputable sources of information that uphold your position that would be greatly appreciated.
Good grains, vegetables, fruits, and other ingredients can provide nutritional value to our dogs in the same way they do us. There have been tests that show corn can produce highly digestible protein, but that doesn’t say the corn in your dog food will. Grains also lack in most of the amino acids, and other important nutrients found in high quality protein meats. Maybe you could even tell me another food that is easy on my pocket but good for my dogs they are like family and I want nothing but the best for them. Also, salt is high on the list as flavoring, which is bad for the animals just like it’s bad for you. Vets have a very poor understanding about pet nutrition, primarily because they get very little nutritional training, except from pet food manufacturers, who in some cases will of course tell you Corn is good for dogs.

After trying a few different alternatives, I have found one that works great and is much less expensive! Here is what to do and how:I use equine bedding pellets.
Beef & bone meal is the ground up stew of some of the most undesirable parts of the cow, along with some bone thrown in. A 40 pound bag is about $7 at any feed store and lasts as long as the same amount of kitty litter would have lasted you.
I add the same amount of the equine pellets to the litter box and mix in about 2 cups of baking soda. Then I add about 1 cup of water (don't worry - it gets soaked up quickly by the pellets). It’s a stew of animal parts that would probably make most people vomit upon seeing or smelling it. They break down into a powder when they get wet, the pine helps with odor, and they cost considerably less. To avoid bringing unwanted pests into the house, bag or cover clippings with black plastic and leave it in the sun for a couple of hours to heat up. This would be used more like the old style litter and be changed out completely every week or less. We found out by accident how well this works when one of our cats decided she preferred to live in the garage.
After some experimentation, I came upon the bagging method to kill any bugs that get mixed in with the clippings.
