I have only worked one thru hiker season at Mountain Crossings, but the patterns are obvious. Open up your first aid kit and separate it into everything you know how to use and everything you don’t know how to use. People go overboard on clothes, but having the proper clothing keeps you from carrying too much. It can seem harsh to riffle through someone’s pack and tell them to get rid of things they have thought long and hard about bringing. After getting a Fine Arts Degree in Photography, I set out and thru hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2013.
Why do people like you always endorse expensive products when far less expensive options are available? I totally agree, conditions are totally different here in Australia, and our Cellular Network coverage is almost nonexistent for most providers outside of capital cities. Hey Jim, go back and reread the article…she specifically mentions pepper spray and how carrying it dishonors the trail. I carried a small thing of pepper spray the whole trail (mostly for my parent’s peace of mind). When you get a cut or a scrape, you usually have your own first aid kit to help out with that, don’t you? I’ve been thinking about this a bit lately, and thinking about what I would prepare for myself for those ‘off’ days.
A journal that you use specifically for writing about things you like about yourself, and things that you’re grateful for in your life. I’ll also take this opportunity to indicate that meditation and yoga have been really useful for me to centre myself when I’m feeling angry, lonely, or upset. I know it might be a bit of strange idea – after all, mostly we’re encouraged to look after our physical selves and not to give much attention to our mental health until something goes wrong.

Occupational First Aiders complete a 3 day course and receive a FETAC certificate valid for 2 years, after which they must participate in refresher training. The first thing that comes to mind is ergonomic issues – make sure you and your employees have proper seating (5 castor base) with good lumbar support, correct seat height, and seat material conducive to extended periods of sitting. Accidents in the shop can be very severe, requiring more than a few band aids and an instant cold compress.  How about a bottle of Betadine wash, so you can sterilize deep cuts?  A bottle of sterilized water should you get something in your eye?  And, for the very worst case scenario, a one gallon zip top bag should you have to bring a severed body part with you to the hospital. I figure controlling any bleeding is the major concern by far, so I am stock for that, including a few Quik-Clot chemical cauterizing bandages.

Even though people living in areas exposed and often afflicted by hurricanes and tornado’s generally are aware of all the precautionary measures, people still do tend to lose lives in these disastrous situations. This is why we’ve come up with an article outlining all the necessary preparations for weathering a storm.
To start with the most basic of needs, the problem here doesn’t necessarily lie only during the timeline of an actual storm, but for days of craze and distortion that ensue afterwards. One gallon of water per person per day, to last three days at the very least, not only for drinking, but sanitation and other needs, as well. This, of course goes without saying, seeing as how injuries are a frequent occurrence in situations such as that of a storm. Emergency services will probably be overwhelmed, perhaps even physically unable to reach you.


Even minor injuries can cause sepsis and further complications, if not treated within a reasonable time period.
Antibiotics – whether it’s ointments, or pills, supplements that prevent bacterial infections are of vast importance here. Prescription medications – you need to have reserves of necessary pharmaceuticals that you or your family members might potentially require. These include insulin, heart medicine, asthma inhalers (you wouldn’t believe how easy these are to misplace, so you better have at least a couple of these stockpiled within your first aid cabinet). A whistle – ridiculous as it may sound, these items can turn out to be real life savers – no one laughs at a whistle sound during or after huge storms, no matter how ridiculous it may seem to an observer.
Towels – these have a wide variety of utilization abilities, from preventing bleeding out, to drying off, in order to avoid hypothermia. When it comes to infants, you’ll need a large number of diapers, to avoid risking infection, as well as an instant formula, for obvious reasons. It is smart to have pliers and a wrench, if nothing, than so as to be able to turn off utilities, such as pipes, or age-old electrical equipment.
These cover most of your essential needs for a storm, as well as other types of a disaster. A lot of the time when we’re feeling low, just having that sense of safety and warmth is enough to make us feel even the tiniest bit better. I’m not encouraging people to spend time ‘living in the past’ – that would be counter-productive.
I know it sounds ridiculous – why would you want to sit around seething for twenty minutes? Mindfulness is to do with being in the present moment and being ‘mindful’ of everything that’s happening without being stressed about it.
Social work can be extremely challenging, working with some really difficulty, heavy issues.
Playing sports, going to the gym with a friend or heading to the dojo for some training are all quick and healthy ways of burning adrenaline and releasing endorphins.
If you only have 1 First Aider onsite and they go on holidays, take a sick day, are at a funeral (the list goes on…) and you have an accident, you’re screwed!
When deciding which PPE is suitable for your employees and the work they will be carrying out, a full assessment is needed to make sure you have the correct equipment.
Tools such as tweezers and scissors – not only are these absolutely necessary for first aid purposes, but might come in handy for a plethora of impromptu situations. Of course, a bit of extra consideration might go a long way in helping you weather the worst of weather conditions out there, so feel free to add a couple of your own ideas to the list. A year later I took it one step further into the outdoor retail world and started working for Mountain Crossings at mile 31.7 on the Appalachian Trail in north Georgia. I just think it’s a technological safeguard that should be used by anyone doing any hiking or travelling alone or in unfamiliar territory. Some people are better equipped for dealing with these sorts of things – some people (though I must admit I haven’t met one) don’t actually have these little ‘episodes’ of feeling blue.
Showing gratitude can make you feel good whatever mood you’re in – just saying thank you to yourself for knowing when to rest and take time out is great. You can ask them specifically to write a nice letter for this venture if you feel comfortable with that, or you can simply exchange letters and keep them together if they make you feel happy.
It doesn’t have to be a stuffed animal or a blanket, it can be an action figure that you loved playing with, or even just something that reminds you of feeling safe and loved.


I’m just suggesting that by having this box of things that bring you joy, your low mood may be easier to handle, and may not hang around as long. One good technique is to think of five things that each of your senses is experiencing – that is, five things you can see, five things you can hear, five things you can smell, five things you can feel, and, if you can do so, even five things you can taste. One social worker once said that the way he gets through those hard, heavy days is by keeping a notebook on him at all times.

If your clothes get soaked in the rain and you’re cold in camp, slip your town clothes on to sleep in but put your dirtier hiking clothes back on in the morning.
I guess that a biodegradable plant extract ingredient soap called Campsuds isn’t romantic enough.
Knowing that they weren’t worried about me allowed me to relax and enjoy my hike so much more.
Parents worry, a few extra ounces is nothing in the situation where it can save a life or ease a fretting parent.
Extra clothing just means more laundry because it either gets dirty, or simply adds weight to the pack. Many people will have their own specific first aid kits depending on the area they live in and what they’re prone to – and how cautious they are. For those of us who do could it be possible to prepare a sort of ‘Mental Health First Aid Kit’ for yourself?
This technique just helps to take you out of the situation that is upsetting you and put you back in control. We leave our old, comfortable lives behind and come out to the woods with everything we think will we need. As far as pepper spray goes, the Appalachian Trail is a place to restore your faith in humanity. But then I think back to RPH Shelter in New York almost 1,500 miles into my thru hike when I finally got rid of all the pointless shit in my pack I hadn’t touched yet.
It was definitely worth the weight, and I only used one set of batteries the entire 6 month trip!
It kind of sucks to even need to carry a cell phone, I didn’t on my first hike in 06, but the pay phones have all disappeared. Even if it wasn’t in actual physical box or bag, and just a list of things that you keep in a journal or your brain – what sort of things would you put in there? So, even techniques can be put into your mental health first aid kit – you can write down a few things that you know can help and put them in there, too. Problem is, we all have way too much stuff in our lives and we live in way too plush of a manner. Good luck breaking your leg during thru hiker season and not having 10 hikers come along and help carry you out.
Then when you shower in town you can put relatively clean clothes on while you are doing laundry.
Truth be told, that doesn’t translate very well when reverting back to a nomadic, nearly off the grid way of life.
There is no need to be so strictly monitored and its goes against the soul of your journey. Throw out the StingEz and burn gel because you’re an adult who can withstand a bee sting and you also promised yourself you wouldn’t get so drunk as to fall in the fire.
So before you even walk through the front door of the badass, climate controlled shelter you live in, chuck these things out of your pack! Solar charges also fall under the group of way-too-heavy-and-way-too-expensive-to-be-worth-it.
Really all you need are a few Band-Aids and a bunch of pills; things for achy muscles, diarrhea, gas, cold symptoms, a few sleep aids for the snore symphony nights. In cold weather carry a set of base layers, any necessary hats and gloves and a heavy insulation later like a down jacket but don’t double up on anything. Simply carry decent enough clothing items that you will be sufficiently warm without doubles. Carrying the entire bathroom cabinet of emergency items waiting for a just-in-case scenario is an excellent way to carry extra weight you will never be able to justify.
Just let go, live a little, in the moment, with your own known how and capabilities, and you will find you forgot your phone wasn’t charged for half a day as you rolled into town for burgers and beers!
