We ask that neighbors respect the Wednesday drop off time, as our compost space is limited and we need our volunteers to accept and sort scraps for composting.
If you’d like more information about composting and contributing – or if you want to get involved with composting at the ASCF –  contact us and ask the Compost Crew.
We’ve been exclusively organic milk drinkers since our daughter was old enough to drink milk (8+ years and counting!).  I’ve written about milk numerous times on topics that include the benefits of organic milk, comparing organic to natural milk, as well as reading beyond the organic label. While I believe that the benefits of organic milk are indisputable, I recently learned that there is yet another side of the story.  Do you ever wonder how ethical those organic dairy farms are (in terms of everything from how they treat their milk producing cows, to how they acquire the milk, to their overall business practices)? I hope you’re not disappointed by what you find, but if you are, now you know how to truly find a happy cow farm! There are so many more facets of going green in the modern day, and the definition of the term reaches far beyond simple recycling. However, there is a popular misconception that "going green" will "cost you green." We're inundated with green products, eco-friendly formulas, organics and mountains of options, making it seem that going green is an investment rather than an opportunity. Well, I'm here to help dispel that myth and actually show you all of the ways you can live green, keep your family healthy, and benefit the environment without sacrificing anything, including your money. When you make wise choices to gain the most benefit, relieve the burden on the environment, and save money to use elsewhere, everyone wins.
Put these tips into action, and you will soon find that you can "save green" while you "go green"! Please note that the information in this post is for general information only.  We are not experts and before you attempt to search out wild mushrooms it is extremely important to read some expert guides and to seek the knowledge of those experience in foraging. If you want to go hunting for mushrooms to pick then you must arise as early as the sun does and prepare some sandwiches with coffee to take on the trip. Once you get to the spot you want to look for the spruce and pine trees and head for them and find the mossy areas since this is where it is moist and mushrooms love humidity.
The tinting of the cap should be a brown shade from light yellow right on through to dark brown.
After the pine trees you can head towards the shrubs and oak trees and check for more convex capped mushrooms. It means getting closer to the ground and moving the leaves around and once you find them you will see that the mushrooms near oak trees tend to be lighter in color while some will still be dark brown.
The majority of the mushrooms are edible from the Boletus family making them a valuable commodity to the hunters of wild mushrooms.
Once you return from hunting you need to clean and cook the mushrooms and preserve them on the same day. Never experiment with a mushroom that you cannot positively identify.  A poisonous mushroom can kill you. Lemongrass adds a distinctive, pleasant citrus aroma to a wide range of Thai food, including tom yum soup, curry paste, and assorted meat dishes such as lemongrass chicken. We ship fresh USA-grown lemongrass via Priority Mail, quick delivery within 2-3 days straight to your mailbox. To heat, simply put the pouch in boiling water for 3 minutes then open and serve alone or over rice.

For 15 years we've specialized in demonstrating truly authentic Thai recipes, with Tom Kha being one of our website's most popular, for good reason. As business grows, employment is expanding and some workers are getting plenty of overtime: wage income that spreads throughout the community. Prevents slimy veggies and gross smells – plus freezing helps the food begin its breakdown process!
You can turn your fruit, vegetable and garden scraps into a dark, crumbly, nutrient-rich soil conditioner.

It began, as a little girl, when I helped my mom gather the recyclables and deliver them to a recycling center. My life is far from being as green as I would like it to be, but I’m trying…and I’m learning. The process of hunting for mushrooms can be time consuming but one that ends up being a lovely activity in the outdoors with lots of fresh air. One good reason to start early is the early morning sunrise helps you spot the mushrooms and it is easier to smell them in the refreshing air as the sun reaches over the horizon. Then once you spot mushrooms you have to look for those with the outward curves which are convex formed on the cap of the mushroom because the majority of edible wild fungi have convex caps. This at times is difficult due to the many leaves on the forest floor from the many trees and because the leaves and mushrooms blend well together because of many shades being similar then it makes for a challenging effort. Following the oak you can check our shrubs and birch trees where you will find reddish caps and light brown caps on the pore fungi. There is a lot of energy expensed in mushroom hunting and preserving but they must be done since some will not last the night not even in your fridge.
Lemongrass adds a wonderful flavor, but a key point of using it in Thai food is for the aroma--to add the sensation of the scent, or to mask any undesirable odors of beef, poulty or fish.
You use only the inner white portions of the stalk, so remove the tough outer layers first. Premium ingredients and sophisticated preparation ensure that this rivals anything a Thai restaurant serves. Tom Kha Smoked Salmon: Tom Kha served with smoked Alaskan wild salmon is a combination made in heaven. For this particular finished product, we're not sharing the recipe (it took years to perfect); but there is no question that it tastes authentic, otherwise we woudn't do it.
The combination of coconut milk, galangal, lemongrass, lime juice and chile peppers creates a sensational flavor that somehow transcends taste preferences around the world. We're passionate about delivering a premium product, and confident that after years of experience dealing with the finest growers and purveyors, nobody can do it better.
The galangal we use is sourced from Hawaii, chosen at the perfect stage to ensure excellent taste and aroma. We carefully select the best fresh limes from a wholesale market in Seattle and squeeze the limes on location.
We use the perfect mix of fresh red Thai chiles and lemongrass sourced from the market in Southern California. We use the highest quality fresh shallots, which come from a small farm in Washington State, and our garlic is a special variety grown in Oregon.
This soup is packed in the great Pacific Northwest in a new facility that rose from nothing and is now creating jobs for hard-working people.

Composting benefits the environment by recycling valuable organic resources, and supports our garden by improving the fertility and water retention of the soil. When layered or mixed in proper proportion with adequate moisture and ventilation, these materials efficiently decompose, producing fertilizer for the garden. It continues today, as a mom myself, when I teach my own children those same responsible virtues.
If there are other pickers they tend to keep to themselves and if all goes right you are back home by mid-day ready to spend the afternoon cleaning your mushrooms.
Lemongrass is also known throughout the world for it's medicinal effects, including general pain relief, reducing blood pressure, reducing intestinal gas, helping to improve the appetite, it detoxifies vital organs, and is known to reduce cholesterol, excess fats and other toxins.
Ready-to-eat, premium quality, authentic and delicious Tom Kha soup made in small batches using the highest quality ingredients.
Our soup rivals anything made from scratch in any famous Thai restaurant (it's *that* good) and simply blows away the existing competition from the likes of Lobo or Por Kwan in their premade Tom Kha instant mixes -- there is no comparison. Every stalk and every chile is selected with our own eyes and cut by hand the same day our soup is made.
As a direct importer from Thailand for many years, we've established ourselves with what we believe is the best producer of all-natural coconut milk.
The pouch is modern, BPA free, simple to use, relatively inexpensive, and far easier on the environment than cans. This product is produced under the watchful eye of American regulatory authorities who set strict guidelines on food manufacturing. We're doing our part to not just support the local manufacturing economy, but also American farmers & fishermen.
From food choices, to cleaning your home, to saving money on your monthly utility bills and consumption; the choices are vast. Our soup is cooked entirely in the pouch in a modern facility using high heat and a relatively long cooking time, under high pressure. Our soup has already gone through a rigorous analysis, the process has been approved, and everything has been registered with the US FDA. We know that our cooperative is a group of small farm families that are creating healthy soils, healthy animals and of course healthy dairy products. Lemongrass tea, shown below, is very simple to make and is known as a natural remedy for depression, and jet lag. Step 3, with a good cleaver, whack the lemongrass firmly several times to bruise it, this releases the oils.
For long-term storage, cut into 2 or 3 inch pieces (see below, how to prepare lemongrass), and freeze in a ziplock bag. In 2006 researchers at Ben Gurion University in Israel discovered that the lemon aroma in lemongrass kills cancer cells while leaving healthy cells unharmed. The findings were published in the scientific journal Planta Medica, which highlights research on alternative and herbal remedies.
