Carolyn Connor, who just happens to be on vacation at the same place as Marguerite and Julius, gets seated at the same table as the two for dinner. Georgina Kincaid has just had her heart pulled out of her chest and stomped on by the one mortal she trusted and loved, and she’s decided to let herself go down a dark path of self-loathing. Succubus Heat is trademark Richelle Mead – a fast-paced plot balanced by characters in nasty, emotional situations, all written with a deft, quippy style.
The thought depressed me, and I found myself growing sadder and sadder as I walked back to my hotel.
In terms of plotting, however, I felt something was lacking in this book compared to its predecessors. Overall I really enjoyed Succubus Heat, though it wasn’t as good as the prior books in the series. Still, I knew my boss was going to be pissed, seeing as he was the one who’d ordered me to seek counseling in the first place. My friends and I were sitting at a booth in Cold July, an industrial club down in Seattle’s Belltown district.
AnnaSeptember 3, 2009 at 1:20 amI need to get ahold of the first book in this series, but Borders never has it when I go in there! Definitely a worthy addition to Richelle’s Succubus series and it left me aching for more. AdrienneSeptember 3, 2009 at 9:09 amI agree with you and the covers that we have in the US and the super cool covers everyone else gets. 1 : a book review blog specializing in speculative fiction and popgeekery for all ages since 2008. A thousand years ago, the Angel Raziel mixed his blood with the blood of men and created the race of the Nephilim. When Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder— much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. So begins the story of The Mortal Instruments, an epic six-book fantasy series centering on the adventures of Clary Fray and her friends and fellow adventurers.
The Mortal Instruments series has been translated into over 34 languages.  You can see a variety of the international covers for the books here. Hard rock violin player extraordinaire with a drop-dead gorgeous father and a mother who is her very own fangy psychic friend’s network.
I loved the third book in Georgina’s ongoing series, Succubus Dreams, which ended on a huge gut-punch. Then Jerome is kidnapped, and all immortals under his control mysteriously lose their powers.
In that moment, I would have given anything to be with Seth again, to right the wrongs we’d done to each other back around Christmastime. I think I held off on reading this one for a while because I knew I wasn’t in the mood for some serious hardcore angst (the end of Succubus Dreams really got to me!

I get only vampire novels at home, which drives me mad, since god knows how much I like succubi… Brilliant review as always. Human-angel hybrids, they walk among us, unseen but ever-present, our invisible protectors. Not to mention Carolyn is horrified to find herself attracted to a man who is possibly 15 years younger. The humor is characteristically present in Moon, and long-time readers are reminded of why we fell for this series.
Naturally, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on Succubus Heat (though it has taken me a while to actually get to reviewing it!). Unfortunately, while Georgina is doing a great job at work, she’s also irritating her friends and her boss with her bitchy attitude.
It’s impossible to hate Maddie because of her earnestness and how good a friend she is to Georgina, but Seth knew full well what he was doing, and he made a huge, craptastic mess of things. Jerome, Carter and the usual crew of Georgina’s vampire and imp friends are in the picture as well. By night, she watches an abundance of horror movies, stays up too late, and voraciously devours ALL THE SFF.
It’s hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing—not even a smear of blood—to show that a boy has died.Or was he a boy?
But they were beginning to be repetitive and one had to wonder exactly how many times we could read about blood being delivered to an Atlantean descendent. He’s only recently rediscovered his mother, Marguerite, when she came back into his life a few years ago.
I got the insane desire to tap Carolyn on the shoulder and tell her that you would have to carbon date Julius. In fact, she pisses off her boss Jerome so much that he sends her on an out of town job up north in Vancouver for a rival Archdemon, Cedric.
Why should I pine for someone who’d betrayed me and hurt me with my friend, of all people? It’s a bit irritating that the solutions are so obvious to the books, and Succubus Heat is a little more predictable than the others in the series so far.
The Shadowhunters obey the laws set down in the Gray Book, given to them by the angel: their mandate is to protect our world from the interdimensional parasites they call demons, who travel from world to world, razing and destroying everything in their path.
This is Clary’s first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. Understandably, Georgina is a mess after Seth has taken up with Maddie and it’s even worse since Maddie is so innocent and likable (she never knew that Seth and Georgina were together, otherwise she never would have started dating him). But there are a few unexpected faces from the past that show up here, as well as introductions to new characters – all of which are engaging and believable.
A little subtlety will go a long way, and I can only hope that the next installment will be less transparent in terms of its villains. Theirs is also the task of keeping the peace among the warring Downworlders: the human-demon crossbreeds we know as warlocks, vampires, werewolves, and faeries. It’s also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk.

Back when Marguerite and Julius’ story was told, I had a feeling that fresh air would come in the form of the Notte family. The fact that her jerk of a deceased husband arranged it to be this way was little consolation.
Plus, the vampire has 500 years of not having a life mate to make up for leading to some intense shared sexy dreams. It was painful to read this book, with Georgina’s heart flayed open over and over again. The writing is solid and I read through this book in a single sitting…but I want something more from Georgina now. In contrast, look at how gorgeous these other countries’ versions of the covers look!
Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace’s world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. Everything seems to be going according to plan until Jerome disappears, summoned by some human magician – and Seattle suddenly becomes fair game for power-hungry demons.
I love that she isn’t afraid to take chances with her characters, keeping things complicated, hurtful and, well, messy. Their lips and eyes sewn shut, the Silent Brothers rule over the City of Bones, the necropolis below the streets of Manhattan that holds the dead bodies of slain Shadowhunters.
For Georgina, this means she can no longer shapeshift…or draw on the lifeforce of her lovers. Initially I couldn’t help but feel a little angry at Georgina as well as she wallows in self-pity and loathing, blaming herself but never Seth.
Another thing I kept thinking to myself while reading Succubus Heat was how Georgina keeps seeming to make the same mistakes over and over again.
They also watch over the Mortal Instruments, the three divine objects the Angel Raziel gave to his children. She’s supposed to be over a millennium old, and yet she continues to blunder with her emotions and decisions. At first I questioned this – would a creature this old be so silly and petty and continue to make these errors? She’s been doomed to an eternity of servitude for Hell, borne of a bad decision she made during her lifetime. But that was before the Uprising, the civil war that almost tore the Shadowhunters’ secret world apart.
Though Valentine Morgenstern, the Shadowhunter who started the war, is long dead, the wounds it left behind have never healed. Rumors run rampant through Downworld that Valentine is back, at the head of an army of Forsaken warriors. Mead creates with her succubus, and I find myself enjoying Georgina’s journey immensely.
