Winton House is a fifteenth century castle which is now an exclusive use hospitality, team building and wedding venue. As well as the 5k and 10k Survival Races, there will be a Bear Grylls Kids Race and a fantastic Bear Grylls Outdoor Festival; truly a day unlike any other! Sign up for the main event, the Bear Grylls Survival Race and Family Festival or visit the Bear Grylls Survival Race website. The races are a range of challenging survival scenarios including jungle, mountain, desert and arctic environments, encompassing all manner of physical and psychological obstacles to overcome.
Our lucky participants will experience a range of ultra-dynamic obstacles all inspired by the tremendously adventurous life of Bear Grylls. The 10k Survival Race cranks up the pressure and is strategically designed to test even the toughest adventurers. The Bear Grylls Kids Race is exactly as it sounds; we want to see all of our little ‘Bears’ challenging themselves at the BG Kids Race.
With the 2015 Bear Grylls Kids Race seeing over 1,000 amazing participants make it out for the day of fun and thrills, we’re anticipating even more this year. This unique part to the day underscores the entire ethos of the survival race; getting together with friends and family and spending the day doing something unforgettable. The event itself is done in collaboration with and sponsored by a huge variety of exciting partners. While having a ton of fun, we also place a huge focus on safety, and to provide medical assistance on the day, Exile Medics will be there on hand. Of course, with so many different elements to our events, we need some fantastic outdoor gear. Festival & Race Tickets for all events are available at the Bear Grylls Survival Race website.
Bear Grylls stars in a new six-part adrenalin-fuelled series for ITV in which the adventurer takes eight celebrities into the depths of one of the most unforgiving Central American rainforests, where they will be competing in an epic 12-day survival mission.
In Bear Grylls: Mission Survive the celebrity expedition team will be pushed to their physical and emotional limits. Joining Bear are actors Emilia Fox and Laurence Fox, singer and actor Max George, double Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes, TV presenter and singer Jamelia, comedy actor Tom Rosenthal, DJ, model and presenter Vogue Williams and Former England International Rugby Player Mike Tindall MBE. Testing the celebrities at every turn on the fundamental principles of survival: shelter, water, fire and food, the celebrities have to abseil down ferocious waterfalls, cross perilous rapids, trudge through swamps and negotiate razor-sharp vines - not to mention contending with scorpions, snakes and sand flies.
Bear will guide the celebrities on their punishing assignments, sharing with them his expertise, mindset and skills. Meg and Scott will be Bear’s eyes and ears throughout, observing the progress of the famous faces as they advance through the jungle. It was great to pull in such high calibre guests but I guess this journey is unique in the sense that it was a genuine expedition like no other. I had got so used to life at home, I wasn’t doing anything to push myself out of my comfort zone.
I have done so many great things since I retired but nothing where there was a physical element and I was really taken out of my comfort zone. I love any opportunity to try something new and thought this would be a once in a lifetime chance where I would get the chance to learn about another country, another environment and about survival from someone as experienced in this area as Bear Grylls. Designed for survival in the most extreme conditions, the Bear Grylls ultimate survival pack from Gerber is the all-weather workhorse of the Bear Grylls survival line. The multitool has 12 components, including pliers, wire cutters, a partially serrated blade, a wood saw, a small flathead driver, a bottle opener, scissors, a crosshead driver, a piercer, and a medium flathead driver. The compact, rugged Tempo flashlight has an anodized aluminum body and a bright white LED light source that produces a 7-lumen output with a 30-foot distance.
Before making a purchase, please check the local, state, and federals laws governing where you live to ensure the item you are interested in purchasing is legal for you to buy and own. Interest in basic human survival has surged since the productions of television shows like Man vs. In order to best prepare yourself for the unpredictable, it is important to have a certain amount of knowledge regarding these factors. Without a consistent supply of oxygen, you can experience a condition called cerebral hypoxia which affects our brains. In hot weather it is recommended that the average person needs to consume two quarts of water a day to replace the amount lost due to sweating, respiration and excretion to maintain a balance of body fluids.
When the hydration balance is unable to be maintained the body will start to go through the dehydration process. The length of time one can survive without water depends on activity level and environmental temperature. The first two to three days without food, the body will depend solely on the fat reserves to run the muscles of the body. After day three, the liver begins to synthesize ketones (short strand fatty acids) that can cross the blood-brain barrier.
Without the ability to keep a constant temperature, a person runs the risk of hypothermia or heat stroke. On the other end of the spectrum, a temperature of 107.6 degrees results in a breakdown of the central nervous system.
Extreme temperature fluctuations can cause hallucinations and illogical behavior, which can cause a person to fail to take the proper steps to keep himself alive.

Although the mechanisms of sleep are not well understood, the problems associated with lack of sleep are.
There are other things you could add to this list like sex, emotional connection, sense of belonging, etc. Beyond our health, the simple fact is that our entire society is based primarily on the existence and leveraging of these five factors.
Average Outdoorsman is an excellent resource for outdoor activities, educational, and informative goodies. All about living off the grid, sustainable living, homesteading, prepping, survival, solar power, wind power, renewable energy, permaculture, hydroponics, recycling, DIY projects, and natural building. That’s right, the Bear Grylls Survival Race and outdoor festival has now arrived in Scotland for the very first time and will be taking place in the beautiful grounds of Winton Estate in East Lothian. The Bear Grylls Survival Race team to oversee the festivities and bring to life Bear’s world renowned spirit of endeavour, fitness and adventure.
Participants will be encouraged to survive by completing our unique survival challenges including (but certainly not limited to) fire-lighting and air rifle shooting. Open to children aged 4-13, participants will make their way through the jungle, desert, mountains and arctic all in one course!
From gourmet pop-up food stalls to a fully licensed bar, there are also craft shops, bush survival demonstrations on the main stage and a ton of festival entertainments for all ages including a bungee jump, Water-zorbs, Segway and even live music, para jet flying shows, falconry and…for the brave, a bush-grub eating contest, plus so much more…There will also be race-viewing points within the festival and the opportunity to dabble in some of the Survival Challenges featured in the race. To start us off, we are all too aware of the importance of good hydration on the race, and Aquacai will be our official water sponsor for all of the events.
Even though we put on a grueling course, safety is priority and through our partnership with exile medics, we will see between 25 – 75 qualified medical staff on event day.
Run for Charity is the only website dedicated to charity running and provides information and support to more than 15,000 new fundraisers every month. With a slim profile and full tang construction, the Survival Hatchet is just the right size for survival situations. Issued daily mission briefings by Bear, they will have to navigate treacherous obstacles and journey through dangerous dense jungle, testing their ability to adapt, improvise and overcome in one of the world’s most hostile environments.
He will also be assisted on the ground by his much trusted right-hand colleagues, survival experts Megan Hine and Scott Heffield. And at the end of the series, there will be three finalists and ultimately just one Mission Survivor. It was without doubt a tough expedition, but also a very life-enhancing adventure for everyone involved. We see unlikely heroes emerge and those we might think are invincible often actually crumble!
So few people get the chance to do this for real as well as testing themselves and learning skills that will stay with them for years. I liked the stuff Bear did and I thought this experience would be completely different to anything I have ever done. It features an easily pocketable multitool with 12 components, Gerber’s Tempo flashlight, a fire starter rod, and a textured plastic sheath for durable yet convenient storage. All components lock for safety and dependability, and the tool is housed in a tough rubberized handle that’s perfect for gripping in the elements. It’s powered by a single AAA battery (included) for up to 4 hours of run time, and the LED bulb has a life rating of 100,000 hours. This list presents the five very basic physical items that people need to survive on this Earth. Each of these items represents fundamentals that have kept humans alive from the dawn of time to today.
After 15 minutes without oxygen, the brain damage can be so severe that most people will not recover. A 2.5 percent loss in water volume in a person leads to a 25 percent reduction in blood volume. A body that does not have food can survive for quite a long time by subsisting on the fat reserves in the body and, eventually, the glycogen reserves in the liver and the proteins in the muscles.
This lack of clear thinking can be detrimental on its own, if coupled with a lacking in any of the other basic needs areas it could be life threatening. The difference is that although sex is needed for the species to survive an individual can live without it. Adding to events is the fact that the settings for these epic adventures are in some of the UK’s best locations. The 5k Survival Race is packed with exciting and fun challenges, designed for all levels of fitness and it is a fantastic event to tackle individually or better still in a group with friends. The general aim being to uncover their inner ‘Survivor’ through a series of professionally constructed themed zones. Bear himself is a big believer in the idea that kids are the next generation of survival experts and we hope we can be part of how their adventuring starts.

Overbury, the UKs leading outfitting specialists have kindly built four fantastic obstacle scenarios…without giving too much away, one of them includes a dizzying 15 metre drop! Our events also would not be the same without fantastic contribution from Ex Royal Marines and Bear Grylls Survival Academy Instructors.
Our charity partner for the Bear Grylls Survival Race is stand up to cancer and we work with over 300 charities through our run for charity programme. I would set them daily survival missions and would then regularly back away, leaving them to their own devices, so that they would learn by doing it and making mistakes.
I am really proud of those that were standing at the end- and the journey that they personally had gone through.
I am happy and I enjoy my life in the city but I have never had to find a shelter, get food or worry about the primary issues to do with living. You always think you are going to be a manly man until you are put in a situation where you have to be a manly man. Each item in Gerber’s survival series is thoughtfully designed by Bear Grylls and Gerber to offer features that can help keep a smart adventurer alive in the wild. The multitool has an overall length of 6 inches and a closed length of 4 inches, and it weighs 11.14 ounces. In addition to the fire starter rod and plastic sheath, the ultimate survival pack also comes with a pocket guide on the priorities of survival by Bear Grylls. This list presents only the basic human needs to survive; people may need other items to grow, adapt and thrive.
Even though they don’t explicitly mention these five basic needs, Bear Grylls and Les Stroud spend each episode of their respective shows giving tips that expound on these to everyday people who may run into a survival situation while they brave the outdoors.
While each of these has changed and been adapted over the millions of years humans thrived, the principles remain the same. Some foods can also provide you with water, though you should avoid food and drink that could dehydrate you. This means the blood gets thicker and the heart has to work harder to pump nutrients throughout the body.
Once the fat reserves are used up, the body will begin breaking down the musculature into proteins that can be converted into amino acids that are then transformed into glucose.
Signs of starvation include apathy, listlessness, withdrawal, changes in hair color, flaky skin, and massive edema in the abdomen and lower limbs, all of which lead to a higher chance of infection. Emotional connection and a sense of belonging are group needs, not individual survival needs.
Without air, water, food, sleep or shelter, none of us would see it past our first few days on Earth.
While a physical element is required, the 5k survival race is also a fantastic opportunity for those with limited experience of this type of event to push themselves and make a positive impact on their own health and fitness goals.
The Bear Grylls kids race is of course a fantastic race opportunity for young ones, but it’s also a great tool for parents and grown-ups; a perfect chance to get the kids back outdoors and off their computers to begin their relationship with adventure. The memberships provide effective strategies to minimise costs and increase fundraising levels. I wanted to go on a show where it is a much more authentic life and where everything is a lot simpler. I wanted to have an incredible experience in a country that I had never visited before and learn some new skills.
I really do respect Bear, I watch his show, I’ve watched his DVDs and I love what he does. Environmental risks such as high amounts of smoke, high altitudes or carbon monoxide can prevent you from breathing in oxygen.
This lower blood volume also reduces flow to the extremities, leading to numbness in the fingers and toes. Cold temperatures and high winds can strip away valuable moisture as quickly as high temperatures can cause sweat related loss.
Sleep deprivation can cause a myriad of problems ranging from decreased body temperature to cognitive impairment and hallucination.
The truth is, there are only five basic needs; Clean Air, Water, Nutrients, Shelter and Sleep.

Some medical issues may prevent your body from receiving oxygen like cardiac arrest, stroke, drowning and others.
The thicker blood also has a harder time making its way through the small capillaries in the brain.
Once this process has completed there is no other internal source of energy and the body dies. A shelter should consist of a place to make fire to create heat as well as protection from the wind and rain.
After 144 hours, hallucinations ensue and there is a considerable loss of attention and manual dexterity. The lack of oxygen to parts of the brain can make it impossible to concentrate or focus for any period of time.
