Nuclear, biological, and chemical threats will probably be faced by everyone in their lifetime and having the tools to deal with these threats will be paramount to your survival. Since the dawn of nuclear weapons, we have always been weary of a trigger happy world leader hastily pushing a nuke detonator. Each day we are exposed to nuclear radiation, some naturally and some through un-natural means. Those that live near nuclear power plants should be especially concerned with nuclear disaster preparedness; especially individuals who live in areas where natural disasters (hurricanes, earthquakes and tornadoes) could damage the nuclear facilities.
No matter where radiation leaks or disasters occur, they will affect us globally one way or another and we should be ready for them. According to “Health Ranger” Mike Adams, even growing your own organic produce is no longer enough to guarantee food safety.
One of the easiest ways to minimize the effects of radiation is knowing where our food comes from and limiting our exposure to radioactive foods and water sources.
Having an  electroscope that gauges how much radiation you are receiving daily can be a useful tool. Thoroughly wash your produce. Despite arguments to the contrary, you can wash radioactive particles off of produce. Also, by adopting an anti-radiation diet can provide natural alternatives to assist the body in ridding itself from exposure. Any food or water stored in sealed containers that have any fallout dust is safe to consume as long as the fallout dust is brushed or rinsed off the outside of the container. If you are concerned about your water sources, use filtered water in everything, including brushing your teeth and sponge bathing. Did you know that the Spiderwort plant is Nature’s gieger counter? This plant naturally has very dark purple flowers and when they are exposed to radiation or near an area where radiation is high, the flowers turn pink. Knowing in advance how much radiation you are  exposed to radiation through natural and un-natural means can help you calculate your annual radiation dose. Due to the fear of panic and gridlock that will ensue from mass evacuations, most governments will delay mandatory evacuations until the last minute. If told to stay indoors, turn off the air conditioner and other air intakes and go to a basement. Likewise, creating a sealed area near the entrance of the shelter will prevent fallout dust from entering. To go a step further, covering the windows wood, then sandbags followed by masonry bricks will create a multi-layered protection against you and radioactive particles.
If you have signs of radiation on skin soak in a tub of equal parts baking soda, apple cider vinegar and epsom salt. Getting caught out in the rain can also cause you to have more exposure to radioactive particles. When fallout is first anticipated, but has not yet arrived, anyone not already sheltered should begin using their N95 particulate respirator masks and hooded rain ponchos.
For adults, paint 8 ml of a 2 percent tincture of Iodine on the abdomen or forearm each day, ideally at least 2 hours prior to possible exposure.
For children 3 to 18, but under 150 pounds, only half that amount painted on daily, or 4 ml. When you know that the time to take protective action is approaching, turn off all the utilities into the house, check that everything is sealed up and locked down, and head for the shelter. If you are told to evacuate or bug in place due to nuclear attack or nuclear leak disaster, keep in mind that this type of disaster is survivable. This is a question that has caused much debate among the survival and prepping communities.
Here is a compilation of the most commonly asked questions about prepping, survival and emergency preparedness. If you live anywhere north of the thirtieth parallel line, then you already know what winter is like.
This is an unpaid position, your work will be rewarded with a dofollow link to your site in the same niche. Do we conduct fire drill just in one school in some remote village or in all schools all over the country?
Do we conduct safety drill just in one movie theater in an unknown hamlet or in all theaters all over the country? Should we perform nuclear emergency drills only in Nakkanery or in all villages and towns at least in the 30 km radius of the nuclear power plant? The people who lived near that plant never saw it coming… and if you live in one of the 31 states with one or more of the 100 nuclear power plants in the US, you may not see it coming either. It’s a known fact that FEMA is already making preparations for aiding the 7 million Americans who live along the New Madrid fault line (which spans several states). When you take the tablets, your thyroid becomes “full” of iodine and blocks out all the radioactive iodine from the contaminated area.

Miso is rich in iodine, which protects the thyroid and the iodine-receptor rich tissue as described above.
It’s also easier for your body to process than tablets (all minerals are easier for your body to process in food form than tablet form) and tastes delicious. Kelp, wakame, kombu, and other sea vegetables are a natural source of iodine, but more importantly they’re rich in sodium alginate, a polysaccharide, which selectively binds radioactive strontium and eliminates it from the body. Potassium Iodide tablets are easy to find and light enough to add to your survival kit and bugout bag, but I highly recommend also adding the food options to your survival food kits. Your local Asian grocery will have miso and sea vegetables, but you can also order them online. The partial nuclear meltdown in Fukushima has made it very clear that nuclear facilities are NOT 100% safe.
Nuclear power plants use nuclear fission (the breakdown of unstable atoms) to generate massive amounts of heat. The government has taken many precautions to warn you in the event that a nuclear emergency occurs, and they have plans in place to immediately deal with nuclear emergencies.
Create an emergency urban survival kit: a minimum of 3 days’ worth of food and water is essential along with basic urban survival gear such as flashlights, knives, extra clothing will be needed. Stay up to date with local emergency plans: if you live within 10 miles of a nuclear facility, your local government will likely have written material containing information about local emergency shelters, evacuation procedures, and basic information to better understand the dangers of a nuclear emergency. The severity of the crisis could vary, it could end up a small problem or it could end up into something worse than Chernobyl. Once home, throw away any food that was either not in the fridge or wasn’t in a sealed container. There are over 450 nuclear power plants on the planet with many of them in the USA, if a large enough disaster were to occur, you can be sure that many of these facilities will go into meltdown. However, according to history the two worst nuclear events that have occurred were accidental. Due to the Fukushima nuclear disaster, our food supplies, water sources, and even our health have become affected from the radiation dispersed. Keep in mind that foods, especially seafood from the West coast will be the most effected by radiation.
Clearly if the plant has taken in the radiation through the roots, it is irrevocably tainted.
Foods such as kelp, rosemary, spirulina, miso soup and niacin all assist the body in fighting radiation damage.  Other foods that may help in combating radiation sickness are foods that naturally detoxify the body. Planting these in your yard will be a great way to know if you are taking in excess radiation. This will only cause mass confusion and chaos at gas stations, grocery stores and on the streets. Seal the entryway with blankets, bubble wrap or plastic sheeting to prevent the dust from coming in. Have water and baby shampoo near the entrance to wash and thoroughly rinse any exposed skin and hair.
Skin brushing can be very beneficial, because the skin is a primary avenue for detoxification – scrub along with the lungs, kidneys, liver, and colon.
If you do have to go out in the rain, completely cover yourself. Experts are suggesting that if your clothes get wet to take them off and seal them in a plastic bag, immediately shower and change clothing. Everyone should begin taking Potassium Iodide (KI) or Potassium Iodate (KIO3) tablets for thyroid protection against cancer causing radioactive iodine, a major product of nuclear weapons explosions.
You should also have near your shelter fire extinguishers and additional tools, building supplies, sheet plastic, staple guns, etc. Staying on the phone will congest phone lines making it impossible for others in your area to make or receive calls.
However, in order to be ready for these types of disasters means you have to believe that the possibility of a threat is there. The ideas expressed on this site are solely the opinions of the author(s) and do not necessarily represent the opinions of sponsors or firms affiliated with the author(s). If you are working in and knowledgeable about the survival and prepping niche I would love to have you post on this site. Approximately 3 million people within the USA live within 10 miles of a nuclear power plant and if you’re one of them, it would be wise to make preparations for the small chance that you may one day experience a nuclear emergency.
The heat is used to turn water into steam that will turn massive turbines and generators to produce electricity. Also discuss evacuation routes, rally points, and ways to communicate in the event that a disaster occurs. To protect yourself from nuclear radiation you’ll want Potassium Iodide pills, duct tape, dust masks, disposable coverall suits, plastic sheeting, and scissors. Also keep in mind that in the event of a large enough nuclear disaster, there may not be any authorities standing to give you warning information, you may be on your own. If you’re asked to stay indoors, turn off your air conditioning and spend the majority of your time in the inner most room of your building (whatever area has the most walls between you and the outside).

A nuclear power plant going into meltdown is incredibly dangerous but with the right tactics, it can easily be survived. Chernobyl, being the first event, had a fire and explosion that released large quantities of radioactive contamination into the atmosphere, and spread over much of Western USSR and Europe. Radiation tests conducted since the nuclear disaster in Japan have detected radioactive iodine and cesium in milk, beef and vegetables produced in California (Source). This video is a great source that explains how radiation gets into our food supply. Foods that are high in potassium such as apples, oranges, pineapples and pomegranates are foods that are also good cancer fighters. Remember, it is important to replace your filters after multiple uses. Drinking apple cider vinegar can also assist in flushing toxins and  radiation from the body.
If you go outside, you will need to remove your outer clothing before coming inside the shelter. Exposure to fallout radiation does not make you radioactive, but you need to assure that you don’t bring any inside. If no tablets are available, you can topically (on the skin) apply an iodine solution, such as a tincture of iodine or Betadine, for a similar protective effect. The author may or may not have a financial interest in any company or advertiser referenced. Please consider that in the event of a global catastrophe, or large nationwide disaster that the resources used to maintain nuclear facilities will be at jeopardy, which could lead to complete meltdowns of facilities. A nuclear power plant requires a lot of water and systems to cool down the reactors, the problems occur when the coolant system malfunctions and the nuclear material starts to overheat. Your urban survival kit should also contain copies of important documents so that you can get your life back on track after the disaster. If you’re going to purchase a radiation detector, be sure to study what levels of radiation are acceptable and what levels warrant an evacuation.
If you’re asked to evacuate, quickly gather your BOB (bug out bag) and travel away from the radiation. The second largest nuclear event is the infamous Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster that occurred in 2011.
Washing your food in baking soda or peeling the skin off is a way to avoid ingesting radiation. Calcium bentonite clay is another natural substance that actually absorbs radiation. Baking soda and water is another option as it also flushes radiation and cleans the stomach lining. You can also put baking soda in dish soap, body soap, laundry detergent as the radiation will bind to the baking soda thus  neutralizes it. Having all of your items prepared and in place before the disaster will keep your family or group safe and ready to bunker in more quickly. Any action taken as a result of information, analysis, or advertisement on this site is ultimately the responsibility of the reader. If you’re an urban survivalist preparing for a TEOTWAWKI event, you must consider that there are over 400 nuclear power plants on the planet and therefore protecting you and your family from radiation should be a top priority. If the heat becomes great enough, the barrier protecting the nuclear material from the outside can literally melt away, thereby releasing nuclear particles into the air.
Know the wind currents in your area and travel sideways away from the wind direction (as oppose to downwind or upwind). Now, you’ll need to seal around the last door you use to enter with duct tape all around the edges, especially if it’s a direct to the outside door.
The radioactive particles can potentially travel a great distance if the conditions are right and cause massive damage.
If you’re traveling in a car, keep your car windows and vents close until you get enough distance between you and the incident area. Foods that are high in antioxidants will also assist your body in ridding itself of radioactive particles. If at all possible, inquire of your doctor NOW if there is any reason why anybody in your household should not use KI or KIO3 tablets, or iodine solutions on their skin, in a future nuclear emergency, just to be sure. During a nuclear incident you want to minimize exposure to radioactive material as much as possible, this will mean using a dust mask, and wearing disposable clothing that covers the majority of your skin. Foods such as green and black teas (make sure that your tea is not from Japan), garlic, cumin, nettles, dandelions, ginseng, lentils, collards and mustard greens are also suggested.
If you have Potassium Iodide, start taking the recommended dosage until the emergency is over. Toss your produce in this clay water, making certain the produce is completely covered, and let it sit for 10 minutes.
