On Monday, September 15th 2014, the Morris County Chamber of Commerce in coordination with the Mental Health Association of Morris County hosted an eight hour training course in Mental Health First Aid. This was the third course that Marissa and Tracy have taught since they were certified back in December of 2013.
Congratulations to all the hard working individuals now certified as Mental Health First Aiders! In addition to the Adult Mental Health First Aid course, Marissa and Tracy also became certified instructors in the Youth Mental Health First Aid course this past May 2014. Mental Health First Aid is a public education program that introduces participants to risk factors and warning signs of mental illnesses, builds understanding of their impact, and overviews common supports. Mental Health First Aid is included on the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP). Like CPR, Mental Health First Aid prepares participants to interact with a person in crisis and connect the person with help. Mental Health First Aid is an 8-hour training course designed to give members of the public key skills to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis.
MHFA is the help given to someone experiencing a mental health problem before professional help is obtained. Course participants have been very varied, including employers, managers, teachers, police, nurses, case managers, support workers, social welfare staff, employment agency staff, personnel staff, members of the general public, and staff of national and local government departments. If you are responsible for staff, interact with the public, or just want to improve your knowledge MHFA is for you.
MHFA was developed in Australia and is an internationally recognised training course that has been adapted for the English context.
Participants of the 12-hour MHFA course receive a course manual and also a certificate at the completion of the course.
As the course is heavily subsidised, organisations are asked to pay a one-off (non-refundable) fee of ?60 per delegate, with a maximum of 3 delegates per date. One in three Canadians will experience a mental health problem at some point in their life. Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. The MHFA Canada program aims to improve mental health literacy, and provide the skills and knowledge to help people better manage potential or developing mental health problems in themselves, a family member, a friend or a colleague. Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the help offered to a person developing a mental health problem or  experiencing a mental health crisis.

Anyone who interacts with young people: teachers, counselors, social workers, law enforcement, coaches, family members, first responders, health care providers, community leaders, foster parents, babysitters. Provide help to prevent the mental health problem from developing into a more serious situation. Take the Mental Health First Aid Course in our Coquitlam venue, conveniently located near the Coquitlam Centre Mall or book a date for a private course at your location. When I first heard of the course I did not understand what it would cover; and I am a life coach specializing in working with people with anxiety and depression!  I now know what needs to be done for people before they come to me for recovery. For HR managers, first responders, supervisors, team leaders, first aid attendants, life-coaches, pastors and those working with people that may have life change issues this course is a must do! Yes, mental health issues are at the core of billions of lost dollars in productivity, a huge part of absenteeism and near half the payout of insurance programs in the workplace.  I strongly encourage each workplace to ensure that at least one person on each team has this training certificate as well as the understanding of how to truly be of support before problems escalate. Carla is a Master Trainer for the MHFA course on behalf of the Mental Health Commission of Canada and delivers courses across Canada. Carla is an experienced trainer who can deliver sensitive information in a professional manner.
Taught by certified instructors Marissa Ferrito and Tracy Cappiccille, participants learned basic information about mental illnesses including signs & symptoms, warning signs, risk factors, and how to intervene if someone is experiencing any mental health problem. Each class has been a huge success and people have commented on how informative the course is. This course teaches skills for providing initial help to young people experiencing mental health problems.
This 8-hour course uses role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to offer initial help in a mental health crisis and connect persons to the appropriate professional, peer, social, and self-help care. First Aiders do not take on the role of professionals — they do not diagnose or provide any counseling or therapy. However, it does teach people how to recognise the symptoms of mental health problems, how to provide initial help and how to guide a person towards appropriate professional help.
This is normally delivered as a two day course but can be delivered as four 3 hour sessions. The MHFA courses have been accredited with the National Open College Network (OCN), as 3 credits at level 3. Those who have completed the course have been very positive about the knowledge and skills they have acquired. This fee must be paid in full before the first day or September 30th for the second course. Just as physical first aid is administered to an injured person before medical treatment can be obtained, MHFA is given until appropriate treatment is found or until the crisis is resolved.
We run courses throughout Metro Vancouver (Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Surrey, Richmond, Burnaby, New Westminster, Vancouver, North Vancouver, Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, Langley or Abbotsford).
Now that I have participated in this course it is with sincerity that I provide a recommendation of this program to others. It is also required for people with emergent issues in the area of well-being; mental health. Carla’s passion is to empower people by providing them with the understanding, knowledge and effective strategies needed to support an individual experiencing or developing a mental health crisis.

Her energy, enthusiasm and humour help her create a positive learning experience for participants. The program also teaches the common risk factors and warning signs of specific types of illnesses, like anxiety, depression, substance use, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, and schizophrenia. Instead, the program offers concrete tools and answers key questions, like “what do I do?” and “where can someone find help?” Certified Mental Health First Aid instructors provide a list of community healthcare providers and national resources, support groups, and online tools for mental health and addictions treatment and support.
