CDC has staff on the ground in West Africa and more working on the response from CDCa€™s Emergency Operation Center (EOC) in Atlanta. September 15, 2014 by Shannon 8 Comments Sometimes families have to rush out of their homes due to disasters. It’d be great if you could take your entire disaster preparedness kit (the kit you’d use if stuck in your home for a few days to a few weeks) with you in the event of an evacuation. Creativity Unleashed, Whatever Goes Wednesday, Coffee and Conversation, Works for Me Wednesday, Capture Your Journey, One Project at a Time, Titus 2 Tuesdays & Homemade Tuesdays. This was full of insights I had not thought of so I now have to do some evaluation and fill in the blanks. Food, water, and full minor medical is included along with basic emergency warmth and shelter and lightsticks for high visibility to rescue units. The container stores safely anywhere inside or outside your home and can be used for emergency sanitation purposes.
Electricity may be out for weeks leaving you in the dark and causing water treatment plants to stop working. This emergency survival kit contains the most critical emergency preparedness supplies to prepare for any disaster including emergency food, water, lighting, radio, first-aid, sanitation, and shelter.
It contains a 72-hour survival supply for 1 person including US Coast Guard Approved 5-year shelf-life food and water. If you find a kit of equal or greater value advertised for less, we will refund you the difference. If your family is like mine and has a member with special needs, then it is important that you consider some additional topics. A disaster can prevent you from contacting your doctor and interrupt the distribution of medications and supplies to local pharmacies.
If you use an electric wheelchair, a dialysis unit, or any number of other pieces of medical or mobility equipment that require electricity, then you need to consider what you’ll do if the power goes out.
Family members with mental impairments and children (with or without special needs) may be unable to understand your family emergency plan.
If no one in your family has a driver’s license or no one owns a vehicle, then it is critical to get in contact with your local government to find out its plans for evacuating residents without private transportation. If someone in your family utilizes a service animal, be sure to include food, water, and other supplies for the animal in your preparedness kit and go bag.
Jordan Tappero, prepares to don goggles before entering the Ebola Treatment Unit (ETU), ELWA 3 in Monrovia, Liberia. Though there is often warning that an incident such as a hurricane is about to occur, warning is rare for disasters such as wildfires and industrial accidents.
Let’s look at what exactly should be contained in a family emergency plan and then, if you desire, you can document your plan using the handy printable I’ve included towards the end of this post. Family members may be at work, school, or other locations when a disaster strikes, so it is important to document the name, address, and phone number for the location where each family member is likely to be located. Many hotels and evacuation shelters will not accept pets, so it’s important to keep a list of pet-friendly hotels, kennels, and shelters that are along your evacuation routes.

It is wise to place a note on your go bag that reminds you to grab your keys and wallet so you don’t rush out without them!
As you note, any evacuation will be stressful on your son, but having a plan can at least make it easier on the rest of you! Professionally balanced for portability and self-sufficiency and weighing in at only 8 pounds, this durable kit is the perfect basis for the prepared individual. You may be forced to travel great distances and endure extreme weather conditions as you walk to a safe location or to meet up with loved ones. It is important to have what you need on hand so you can make it until the communication and transportation infrastructures are in working order.
Make sure neighbors, school teachers, personal care attendants, and other individuals who have regular contact with these loved ones are aware of your family emergency plan so they can help your family member get to your meeting place.
If someone in your family may need special assistance coping with a disaster, then you may want to consider what, if anything, can be done to help facilitate this coping.
Please see the About tab on the menu for details about the site, including privacy, advertisement, affiliate link, and comment policy information.
If work, school, or other activities have your family separated when a disaster that requires evacuation occurs, how will you get in contact with one another? Identify areas where traffic or other impediments may cause delays and plot alternate routes.
The next best option is having a “go bag” (a bag to expedite evacuation, not long-term survival). If your medication requires refrigeration, consider how to store it if the electricity goes out.
Would it be beneficial to have a “rehearsal” where you practice the things that might occur during a disaster? This is so you have a valid option available in case the disaster also wreaks havoc in the vicinity of one of your destinations. If you have advanced warning for a disaster that could knock out the electricity for days or weeks, sometimes the best course of action is to evacuate. Are there security items (a blanket, a stuffed animal, a trinket, etc.) that need to be kept on hand because they might calm your family member? Likewise, at least one of the destinations should be a couple hundred miles from your home in case the disaster is catastrophic.
Make sure each family member knows something he or she can do to help this loved one cope if a disaster strikes.
