The Canada Organic Regime is the Government of Canada's response to requests by the organic sector and consumers to develop a regulated system for organic agricultural products. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is responsible for the monitoring and enforcement of the Regulations. Products that make an organic claim must be certified by a Certification Body that has been accredited, based upon the recommendation of a CFIA designated Conformity Verification Body.
Operators must develop an organic production system based on the Canadian Organic Standards and have their products certified by a Certification Body accredited under the Canada Organic Regime.
As of June 30, 2009, any product with an organic claim must comply with the requirements of the Organic Products Regulations. Only products with organic content that is greater than or equal to 95% may be labelled as: "Organic" or bear the organic logo. Multi-ingredient products with less than 70% organic content may only contain organic claims in the product's ingredient list. Certified organic products must also bear the name of the certification body that has certified the product as organic. Organic products sold within the province of origin are subject to provincial organic regulations, the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Regulations and the Food and Drug Regulations. US standards for organic certification do call for field testing of crops and livestock to make sure that they do not exceed well-defined limits of pesticides and herbicides. According to the CFIA’s definition of organic foods, there is no mention of safety, purity, nutrition or sustainability criteria that are all readily and inexpensively verifiable through basic lab testing. Canada’s organic food system must meet all food safety and regulatory requirements, including random testing for chemical residue. However, they don’t claim that regular field testing is required, but is at the discretion of the certifier.
In addition to testing for the presence of pesticides and herbicides organic products should be tested for the pres  ence of pathogens which would crop up if manure, for example, were to be improperly composted. Suffice it to say that standards for organic foods are mind bogglingly lax, especially in Canada. John LawrenceJohn Lawrence graduated from Georgia Tech, Stanford and University of California at San Diego. Let’s not forget one could label hemlock as natural and organic, and without some preservatives bread has a shelf life of a few days. In the pursuit of purely organic status I’m afraid to say one is liable to expose themselves to a lot worse dangers than some of the things that preclude such labeling.
There is no greater gift than a child, but all moms-to-be could probably do without the symptoms that pregnancy brings.
Peppermint  –  Peppermint has been touted as a great way to ease morning sickness, whether consumed or inhaled in aromatherapy form. Crackers  –  Before you get out of bed in the morning, nibble on a couple of saltine crackers to help stop nausea before it begins. Stick to Appealing Food  –  While pregnant women should make an effort to eat a well-balanced diet, women who have suffered from morning sickness know that certain foods can trigger an attack.
Eat Frequently  –  Rather than eating three meals a day, make a point to eat between six and eight small meals each day during your pregnancy.
Ginger  –  If you can’t stand peppermint, food and drinks that contain ginger have also proven to be effective against morning sickness. While many pregnant women have to deal with morning sickness, there are ways to soothe the symptoms. When McKenna Pope’s 4 year old brother asked for an Easy-Bake Oven, her and her parents were surprised at what they had found.
Rightfully so, McKenna didn’t want her brother to feel awkward about wanting an Easy-Bake Oven that is so obviously targeted to young girls instead of boys. Will you see gender-neutral Easy-Bake Ovens on the shelves soon for the little one in your life?
Today on Wednesday, 12-12-12 (sorry, couldn’t resist putting that in writing!), I found Beartha in the Customer Service department! According to the CPSC and Health Canada, the stroller frame can potentially fail to lock completely and therefore collapse, causing a fall hazard to the child in the stroller.
Consumers should immediately stop using this stroller and contact Baby jogger for a free replacement frame. Within the past decade or so, the emphasis on our health and the environment in which we live has increased tremendously. The NOP defines organic as “a labeling term that indicates that the food or other agricultural product has been produced through approved methods that integrate cultural, biological, and mechanical practices that foster recycling of resources, promote ecological balance, and conserve biodiversity. So we’ve covered how to say no to your kids, but what about when your child is dying for a toy that you’d literally rather poke yourself in the eye with a pine needle than allow your child to have? Perhaps you’re an eco-concerned parent and every toy in the house better be BPA-free and lacking in phthalates.
In the very broadest sense, inorganic chemicals and compounds are defined by what they are not; they are not organic in nature, such that anything beyond biological, hydrocarbon, and other similar carbon-based chemicals may be considered inorganic.
All of these chemicals and compounds have application in every aspect of the chemical industry-including catalysts, pigments, surfactants, coatings, medicine, fuel, and agriculture. Chlorine (Cl2) is produced at the positive electrode (anode); hydrogen (H2) and Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH, caustic) are produced at the negative electrode (cathode). Inorganic synthesis, the process of synthesizing inorganic chemical compounds, is used to produce many basic inorganic chemical compounds. These compounds are widely used in many applications, including electroplating, dye and precision casting, alcohol distillation, and papermaking. Bio-Inorganic Compounds - natural and synthetic compounds that include metallic elements bonded to proteins and other biological chemistries.
Coordination Compounds - compounds where the central ion, typically a transition metal, is surrounded by a group of anions or molecules.
Solid State - diverse class of compounds that are solid at standard temperature and pressure, and exhibit unique properties as semiconductors, etc.
Most inorganic chemical reactions fall into four broad categories: combination reactions, decomposition reactions, single displacement reactions, and double displacement reactions. Reactions where the anions and cations of two different molecules switch places to form two entirely different compounds. A special kind of double displacement reaction takes place when an acid and base react with each other.
Hydrofluoric Acid (HF) - a weak inorganic acid that is highly reactive with silicate, glass, metals, and semi-metals. Oxalic Acid - a relatively strong inorganic acid commonly used in cleaning and bleaching applications.

Inorganic salts are neutral, ionically-bound molecules and do not affect the concentration of hydrogen in an aqueous solution. Inorganic compounds, in a broader sense, consist of an ionic component (an element from the Periodic Table shown below) and an anionic component. Ionic compounds may be produced from a combination of an ionic component and an anioinic component where stoichiometric and other rules are met.
Flash point is the lowest temperature at which a liquid can form an ignitable mixture in air near the surface of the liquid. Concentration is the actual quantity of a chemical or compound present in a bulk solid, liquid or gas. Did you know that actually up until the beginning of the twentieth century ALL foods were known as organic? Not until we started pumping our animals full of hormones, dousing our plants with pesticides and adding synthetic chemicals to our foods did our food take a turn for the unhealthy and become something that could not be categorized as organic. In these countries livestock cannot be fed antibiotics or growth hormones and are generally treated much better than slaughterhouses that abuse and pump their livestock full of hormones to increase the meat production for an earlier slaughter. Starting in the late 1990s however the organic good industry growth had increased nearly 20% a year. It has been reported that as of second quarter 2009 organic food sales were between 1 and 2 percent of worldwide food sales. If a food is organic the ingredient label will reflect no artificial food additives, and far fewer of the following; food irradiation, genetically modified ingredients and chemical ripening.
As if you need any reasons to purchase and eat organic foods while supporting organic farms however, organic foods are truly the healthiest for your body and mind and organic farms are the greenest resource of food! Plants and animals that are traditionally bred to achieve specific characteristics such as breeding dogs or cross-pollination of plants.
Genetic modification may include the ADDITION OF DNA from species that would NOT BREED in nature.
Cross-species – or transgenic – genetic manipulation has gone so far as to COMBINE FISH DNA WITH STRAWBERRIES and tomatoes. It took decades for the dangers of Trans-Fats (another artificial food) to become understood.
Mice fed GM pesticide-producing corn over four generations showed ABNORMAL structural and chemical changes to various organs and significantly reduced fertility. Polls consistently show that a significant majority of North Americans would LIKE TO BE ABLE TO TELL if the food they’re purchasing contains GMOs. In 30 other countries there are bans or restrictions on the production of GMOs because they are not considered proven safe.
The Organic Products Regulations define specific requirements for organic products to be labelled as organic or that bear the Canada Organic Logo. Under the Regime, Certification Bodies are accredited based on the recommendation of CFIA designated Conformity Verification Bodies.
A product can be certified if it is produced using the methods outlined by the Canadian Organic Standards. The provinces of Quebec and British Columbia have organic certification systems in place, while other provinces are considering developing their own system. If Canadian organic products (which have been found to contain herbicides and pesticides) cannot be completely trusted, it does not follow that people should trust supermarket foods not to cause harm.
The authors claim that organic farmers want organic certification so they can claim their foods are organic and, therefore, charge more for their products without having the scientific scrutiny that would actually prove that their products truly meet organic standards. It is sufficiently mature that it could support a better testing standard which would not be prohibitively expensive. So Canadians are faced with the prospect of consuming foods that originated in other countries having the Canadian organic label and consuming them as if they were grown in Canada.
Testing is, and always has been, one of the many enforcement and inspection mechanisms available during surprise spot-checks or when an inspector determines that testing is merited. We are shocked by the media attention this has received, which is obviously intended to generate controversy where none exists.
Since Canada has a free trade agreement with the US for the importation of organic foods, these foods from Canada and imports into Canada from other countries can wind up on US store shelves labeled organic. While not all pregnant women suffer from morning sickness, many women will find themselves dealing with bouts of nausea during the beginning of pregnancy. Sip a cup of peppermint tea when nausea strikes, chew on a peppermint hard candy or inhale peppermint essential oil from a diffuser to help calm your stomach. Having a little something in your stomach before starting your day can help offset the beginnings of morning sickness. Sip a cup of ginger tea, snack on a gingerbread cookie or drink a glass of ginger ale to curb nausea and help alleviate morning sickness. Try one or all of the methods listed above to help curb nausea and vomiting until you find a method that works for you. It’s not everyday you see an organic rhino and elephant participating in a joust with an elf and piggy. Even at the age of 13, McKenna was taken aback by the obvious gender stereotyping on the packaging of the Hasbro Easy-Bake Oven.
The petition has been picking up steam, with more than 40,000 signatures and a surplus of comments in support of her argument. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada, in cooperation with Baby Jogger, has issued a recall of nearly 10,600 City Versa™ strollers. This shift in our world view is absolutely necessary and a welcome change to many – including myself-, yet it can be confusing.
The National Organic Program (NOP) specifically deals with this matter under the USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service. It is simply natural and conducive to preserving the environment, just the way it has always been, and arguably the way it always should be. A company claiming their product classifies in one of the below categories is subject to approval by a certified third party accredited by the USDA. It’s a tough situation, especially with the holidays in full swing, and gift givers everywhere are on the prowl for the latest and greatest in toys that you may very well not approve of.
Or perhaps, the absurd beauty ideals subliminally attached to many dolls on the market today are not the values you want instilled on your sweet daughter, or son for that matter? Sure, children go through great lengths to compose a wish-list fit for a king, but sometimes, everything on their list simply cannot be bought. If your child is dying for that Barbie with the skin tight outfit that you are just simply not comfortable with, opt for a different outfit.
The hydrogen ion in the acid reacts with the hydroxyl ion in the base causing the formation of water.

These countries are the United States, Japan, Canada and Europe and they demand that organic producers in these countries meet and maintain certain regulations.
Many consumers do not know this and think the plants, vegetables and fruits they are buying have never been by pesticides. Due to this it was somewhat difficult to find and purchase organic foods because usually these farmers sold to farmers’ markets and small locally owned grocery stores.
This trend brought about an increase in manufacturers, and producers of organic foods as well as the ability to find organic foods.
Please download the latest version of the Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, or Windows Internet Explorer browser. The Certification Bodies are responsible for verifying the application of the Canadian Organic Standards.
The CFIA is working with Conformity Verification Bodies to accredit Certification Bodies under the Canada Organic Regime.
Owners of products bearing organic claims are expected to demonstrate that the product is organic. Inspections consist of checking out the records at organic farms to see if the paperwork is in order, but the actual products are not tested making it more likely that the records could be falsified.
While the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) goes to great lengths to make sure that regular supermarket non-organic food is safe and conforms to all labeling claims, pulling food from store shelves and inspecting it before it leaves the farm, organic foods are not so rigorously tested. What should happen is that Canadians should demand rigorous field testing of their organic products just as they test other products in the food chain to ensure that Canadians (and citizens of other countries they export to) are getting certifiable organic products. The authors contend that Canada will become a backdoor for the importation of non-organic food under the organic label since large corporations realize that there is a lot of money to be made in this high end market, and there is even more money to be made if organic standards are allowed to be debauched.
And there is money involved since the private CFIA certifiers are paid by the farmers themselves as they are in the US. The Canadian standard continues to put more emphasis on bureaucratic paperwork than on scientific analysis and this is the way the big players in the organic industry want it. This back door into Canada also permits these products to be reimported into the US as if they were Canadian certifiable organic products. Organic farmers and processors undergo mandatory annual third-party audits and site inspections.
While consumers pay a premium for organic foods, are they really getting what they pay for? He founded the San Diego Jazz Society in 1984 which had grants from the San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture and presented both local and nationally known jazz artists. Normally, these symptoms subside within the first trimester but, whew, it can be painful and frustrating. Even if you eat the same foods repeatedly, it’s better to have something in your stomach than no nutrients at all. The casing was completely tailored to girls, from the pink and purple colors to the lack of boys on the box. The landslide of signatures has not gone unnoticed at Hasbro, and she is now set to meet with executives on Monday. If you did happen to talk to Beartha, give us a call back, the message may not have been clearly received.
Purchased from July to October 2012 from stores nationwide in both the United States and Canada, the recall includes all Baby Jogger City Versa™ model strollers. We are constantly exposed to terms like all-natural and organic, but do we really know what they mean?
Or perhaps you’re like me, and think Furby is the freakiest thing since Chucky and would honestly be uneasy housing one under your roof, let alone in the room of which your child sleeps!
It reduces the pressure on the shopper, and you’ll be sure you and your child are happy with the result. An example of a decomposition reaction is the decomposition of mercury (II) oxide into mercury and oxygen when the compound is heated.
These regulations on certain non-organic pesticides are of course determined by the special certifications needed by the organic farmers or producers. In the United States in order for a food product to be considered organic it must contain 95% organic ingredients. All organic products bearing the organic logo or represented as organic in interprovincial and international trade must comply with the Organic Products Regulations.
Mischoff and Popoff claim that the lack of organic food field testing is the result of lobbying efforts by the global environmental movement, but perhaps corporate farmers wishing to enter the lucrative organic market are the real culprits here. The US should demand the same before they accept imported Canadian products and give them the USDA organic label. His website is Social Choice and Beyond which exemplifies his interest in Economic Democracy. Thankfully, there are several ways you can ease the symptoms of morning sickness during pregnancy, at least a little. They make the point that regular supermarket food should not be criticized as containing undesirable chemicals if organic foods have to rely, more or less, on farmers’ vouching for the purity of their products. There likely is collusion between the two entities amounting quite possibly to the level of fraud.
Growing truly organic food products would not only be an inconvenience to them but might possibly detract from the bottom line. She created a petition on Change.org in hopes of downgrading the very obvious gender roles depicted on the product. Maybe… But in all seriousness, what you may see as unethical or just plain weird is more than likely nothing that your child will ever see or absorb.
This is a problem not only in Canada but also in the US where big corporations entering the organic industry seek to lower organic standards in order to cut costs.
The incentive for collusion between farmers and certifiers needs to be eliminated, and field testing needs to be rigorously enforced or, in the case of Canada, instituted.
However, when we wind up in the grocery aisle with tons of marketing phrases leaping out at us, it can cause a lot of confusion.
From organic to all-natural to 100% organic, it’s extremely overwhelming to figure out what means what.
