Today at The Estella Society, I share my thoughts about this quick and funny read, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson. Come back as many times as you want and link up any March Magics posts you write this month. Freckle Juice won the third grade division, and rightly so…super cute and you can tell they worked hard on this one. I think Chocolate Fever placed second in the 3rd grade division.  Do you see what I mean when I say it was a tough decision? Pinkalicious is one of my favorite children’s books, so I was thrilled to see this project! I appreciated my son’s teacher this year as NOTHING came home to do with any projects. It would’ve been nice to see some winners that were authentically done exclusively by the hands of a child. Like most preteen heroines of classic children's literature, Alice (of Alice in Wonderland, of course) is a mistress of misrule: bossy, resourceful and a bit of a tomboy.
There is certainly enough suggestively weird imagery lurking in Alice in Wonderland to give any post-Freudian reader pause. The audio version of this story refers to Lewis Carroll as "Arthur Dodgson." Carroll's given name was Charles Dodgson. After being raped at a party, teenage Melinda is unable to tell angry partygoers why she called the police a€” and eventually stops speaking all together. Ansel Elgort and Shailene Woodley star in the film adaptation of John Green's The Fault in Our Stars, a book that's been celebrated for its depiction of positive consent. April 1, 2016 • Today's young adult novels deal with consent, sexual assault and the pressures of sexting, among other things.
Noir has lots of connections with sci-fi and fantasy, but lets get something out of the way: Batman is not film noir.
Noir was always small stories about bags of money and women that have men wrapped around their fingers in hopes that he’ll off her husband. I’ll never forget watching DOA for the first time on late night TV, not being sure if I was half dreaming. The main character in DOA is played by Edmund O’Brien ? a regular in film noirs, who was also the lead in the noirish 1984 released in 1956. Steve Eifert is the editor of the blog Film Noir of the Week and manages Back Alley Noir: the official message board for the Film Noir Foundation.

Stein project won in the 4th and 5th grade division.  I wish you could see the detail that went into this robot and the rest of the props with it.  It was the most incredible reading fair project I had ever seen! While fairs like this are great in theory, it seems like the parents always end up taking over the best ones.
While cute and great as family projects, the adult influence is too, too apparent in these examples. Despite that perfectly starched get-up of pinafore and pantalets, capped off by beribboned blond curls, Alice chafes against convention; that's why she fits in just fine in the psychedelic netherworld of Wonderland and also why she has been beloved ever after by restless girl readers and feminist scholars. But coupled with the fact that Dodgson, an early photography enthusiast, took pictures of young girls, including a famous one of 7-year-old Alice scantily clad as a gypsy waif, Benjamin's rendering of Dodgson as a gentle ancestor of Lolita's Humbert Humbert seems warranted. RKO horror producer Val Lewton was just given titles and he came up with movies based on them ? and boy, were they good.
Robert Armstrong ? the overacting film director from King Kong ? plays a gangster that has a bad day.
Spillane based Hammer on a comic he was writing in the 50s and the character seemed to retain some comic hero characteristics in his books. Yes, it’s a big story about aliens taking over the world, but watch it as a film noir next time.
He recently wrote a piece on the pairing of Sydney Greensteet and Peter Lorre in film noir which appeared in Noir City Annual #3: The Best of the Noir City Sentinel Newsletter paperback. Mom!Mom blog and elementary school librarian sharing product reviews, giveaways, and lifestyle articles for parents. It will be fun for me because when I was in elementary school, we didn’t do any of that. No wonder the first words that Alice utters in the opening lines of Melanie Benjamin's haunting new novel about the "real" Alice a€” Alice Liddell, the inspiration for the character in the Lewis Carroll novel a€” are words of soft rebellion: "But oh my dear, I am tired of being Alice in Wonderland.
In this finely detailed snippet, Alice recalls undressing for the gypsy girl outdoor photo shoot and her dawning awareness of a more mundane aspect of her own upper-class female helplessness: I took the [gypsy] dress, held it up to me, then dropped it to the ground. NPR reserves the right to use the comments we receive, in whole or in part, and to use the commenter's name and location, in any medium. The clothing styles, stories and art-deco look were very much inspired by early crime movies. He gets executed, then brought back to life with cyanide gas serum, only to be shot in the back minutes later. A man on a business trip is poisoned by a slow-working drug ? a glow-in-the-dark, luminous toxin poison. She manages to get enough information from Armstrong to go after his hidden loot, but then she’s chased by cop Sheldon Leonard ? the Damon Runyon-spouting fixture in crime movies.

Bezzerides (the former truck driver that inked some of the best film noir screenplays ever) the film takes on a very different feel.
However, when Batman movies are made today they take inspiration from the old great looking comics ? not from noir. The semi-documentary The Naked City makes New York City look like the dankest, most dangerous noir city in the world. Seeing Kevin McCarthy run down the street like a mad man is gold: a perfect film noir in a sci-fi wrapper. She is writing those words in a letter to her son, who implores her to leave her home in England and sail to New York, where Columbia University is eager to bestow upon her an honorary doctorate and a tea party.
The occasion is the celebration of the centenary of the birth of Charles Dodgson a€” aka Lewis Carroll a€” and it really did happen. The same with Sin City and all the comic movies in between ? except for the fact that they’re almost black and white at times and they wear hats. He’s nasty ? memorably breaking the fingers of a guy played by noir vet Percy Helton.
One certainly can imagine that Alice Liddell felt both tickled by that ongoing attention and trapped. Hammer ? in the form of actor Ralph Meeker ? is in search of a box that, when opened, may be the end of the world (the glowing box would be seen again in Repo Man and Pulp Fiction). Because the tale that gave her and so many generations of readers such anarchic pleasure also, paradoxically, fixed the real Alice Liddell to a fictional identity, one that she could never quite outrun.
The dialog in Kiss Me Deadly is bizarre… as are some of the camera angles and performances.
Alice, as any Wonderland fan knows, was a daughter of the dean of Christ Church College at Oxford, where Charles Dodgson was a stuttering mathematics don. As the origin myth goes, one golden summer afternoon, Dodgson and 10-year-old Alice, along with some companions, went for a boat ride and he spun out the tale of Alice in Wonderland, which she begged him to write down. As Benjamin vividly depicts here, the young girl who became the muse for one of the most rollicking children's tales of all time may have also became, to some extent, its prisoner, pressed into the looking glass of its fictions.
