If your company doesn’t offer telecommuting jobs but you still want to work from home, you can read my recent post called 8 Ways to Make Extra Money From Home. When you are working on your own, in the comfort of your own room you can set-up your own working schedule (most of the time). Forcing someone to work early (or late) doesn’t necessarily lead to better results.A night owl can be just as productive (if not more) than an early riser, they’re simply more productive at a different time. Normally I would try to prepare my lunch at home however since I wasn’t a morning person I would usually run late and either not make my lunch or forget it in the fridge.
When you work from home it means you are your own boss or it means that your boss (in the office) doesn’t see you.
Home office offers a great deal of distractions; the fridge is always calling your name, the laundry needs to be done, the dog wants to go for a walk and one of my personal main distractions – friends and family. An office usually offers the social aspect that your home simply can’t offer, unless you start talking to your pets or to your computer screen. If you are your own boss you can also join local meet-ups where you can meet some very interesting people, network with professional from your field and make good friends. Bosses suck the creativity right out of you, by doing so this leaves the employee feeling worthless in resulting of working harder at the same pay in a connection of “ I need to prove myself”, this contradicting condescending attitude happens way to often in the work place. Bosses will harass you to give them, everything you know, contacts, network- If you know how to do it you are expected to do it, even if it isn’t on your job description, If not you will be a target. To help workplaces answer this question, Caterina Sanders led a discussion on flexible arrangements at the annual Your Workplace Conference. To enhance productivity and get results from our people, one of the first things we need is to understand what motivates them to come to work, and it’s not all about the pay cheque. These three factors help create a culture where people are excited to do their best work, which is the kind of environment needed before considering flexible arrangements. As an advocate for flexible work arrangements, Sanders acknowledges that being flexible can have a downside.
Consider the following chart when thinking about allowing members of your team to work away from the office. Without a culture of autonomy, strong hiring, coaching, and clear accountabilities, you probably have some work ahead of you before you start to lay a more flexible groundwork. Another consideration is the level of novelty a flexible arrangement presents: Is this a completely new idea you’re introducing? If you’ve read this far, and you are still thinking a flexible work arrangement is just what your workplace needs, Sanders has some advice on what steps to take. Assess: Establish an understanding of your overall situation, including the level of demand and what the demand is for. Though Sanders is obviously partial to flexible work-arrangements, she is the first to admit that the cons do exist. Flexible arrangements were first implemented at Habanero in 2003, when both founding partners had young families. Implementing flex arrangements at Habanero was simple, and part of the reason is because the right people in the right positions with clear expectations and regular coaching. Sanders estimates that every employee at Habanero has taken advantage of the flexible work arrangement at some point, and that these arrangements are different for each individual. And just because the terms of work are flexible doesn’t mean the company sacrifices quality. With clearly defined goals, agility in determining the path to get there, and flexibility in how employees achieve results, it is no wonder Habanero was named #1 in Canada’s Best Workplace Awards for 2013!
Most deals are typically given out by merchants rather than service providers, although service-based deals are also available. There are lots of sites out there that try to help you save money, from regular deal sites that simply recommend items on discount to cash back rewards sites like Ebates and BigCrumbs. Those people who take advantage of daily deals will typically save between $10 to $30 on what they buy. The average expiration time of a deal is 24 hours, and there are new deals offered each day (with a countdown). You can check out Daily Deal Sites and their forums so you can connect with like-minded shoppers.
Daily deal and group-buying sites are a huge trend right now, and we as consumers can take advantage of their huge discounts to save on everything from hotels to food to clothing. I unsubscribed from Groupon after reading this story about how a business lost a lot of money because of it. It’s not a big loss for Groupon though because I never did buy anything, came close a few times, but never actually ended up with anything.
I’m a new follower to your blog and I just had to comment as this post really resonates with me! In the past decade, online learning has become more accessible as potential students discover that no matter what their daily obligations, they can find a way to obtain a degree working with their own schedules.
With little excuse for not pursuing higher learning in order to obtain a degree, more and more people are turning to online classes in the hopes of fortifying their careers and obtaining a good salary. If you are employed, have a family to raise, are housebound, live in a rural area, or are constantly on the move, distance learning provides a viable virtual setting where you can fit classes into your schedule.
Working on a semester or trimester system, even four to six week course blocks, is another positive aspect of online education. Because taking online classes is usually less expensive than taking courses at traditional on-campus universities, many people who could not afford a degree now can do so. A great disadvantage of taking online class is that if you are not thoroughly committed to getting your degree, it can take years to obtain.
Not socializing in real time with live human interaction can be either a plus or a minus, depending on the type of person you are. Physical areas for studying that help you concentrate are not always as readily available when you are learning from home, rather than on campus. Sitting down with your professors for face-time conversation is not possible with virtual studies, where essential elements of non-verbal communication can also be lost.
One of the most delicate areas when it comes to the pros and cons of taking online classes has to do with accreditation. Sometimes an online university will present an unrealistic timeframe for completing your courses en route to a degree. To learn more about the pros and cons of online education, discuss which option best suits your learning style and lifestyle, and begin earning your degree, contact us today. Each month, our crack team of Marshall Location Scouts will be given a dummy project of programming, design, and content work and sent to an exciting new locale for a full work week, and then reporting their results back to us in a handy chart.
Welcome to the Marshall Creative blog, brought to you by a bunch of employees at Marshall Creative in Chicago and elsewhere. Lack of movement – as much as you try to move as you go to fill a glass of water on every two hours, for example, there is an indisputable fact: you sit on a chair almost all day long. You can follow your inspiration – if your work is creative, then you probably have found yourself in a situation when you have difficulties and then suddenly you get inspired.
You can relax as much as you want – that is something that generally is not possible at the office. It will be hard to find anybody to go out with – working at home does not necessarily make you asocial.

However, you must know that working from a home office offers a few cons, not only the pros. You get up early, get in your car and spend 1 hour in the traffic jams – unpaid for your time, of course. I did try to take public transportation but getting to work took just as long as being stuck in a traffic jam. You could start  your work later and finish earlier or you could throw in the extra 2 hours into your working day… or you can browse Youtube, it’s still more fun than commuting. Let’s be very conservative and say you are getting a minimum wage salary which is about $10 per hour (average between USA and Canada).
Many people hate the feeling of someone constantly watching over their shoulder and become a lot less productive. It will take a long time for your friends and family to actually understand that you are WORKING while in your house.
One of the biggest disadvantages of working from home – you need to be very self-disciplined. Hypocritical behavior is an added flaw in the workplace, some advice, don’t ever talk about your personal life as it will be used against you. If you are getting attacked everyday surrounded by people that have a very condescending approach to you, then will you do a good job, even thou you love what you do.
To implement a successful and sustainable flexible work program, it is essential to go beyond the policies and procedures manual. We can encourage autonomy at our workplace by giving people control over how they do their jobs, and this can be expanded to include where and when they do their jobs. We need to make sure that our people feel like they are getting somewhere, or they will become frustrated and eventually give up. If your company considers creating or expanding flexible arrangements, it is essential to understand the advantages and disadvantages, and the implications they might have for your team.
This is where a classic Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) analysis can come in handy. This includes guidelines that are equitable, understandable and beneficial to both employer and employee. She is also confident that these arrangements are worth exploring and suggests that if you have the right organizational culture, a lot of the cons end up taking care of themselves. It made sense for them to stay home an extra day a week to keep an eye on their young ones while doing work when convenient. Depending on a person’s needs and responsibilities, employees may sometimes work from home, take temporary leaves, or go part time.
I seem to go through different cycles of really enjoying it and then times when I find it really hard. The grass is always greener on the other side but sometimes I think it’s easy to glamorise certain aspects of jobs. I have recently started working from home after quitting my job and it’s much harder than it would first appear! I currently live & work in the bottom of my parents garden, down the path & through the fence in a wooden house. Because so many credible universities are now offering distance-learning programs, students can have their pick of institutions no matter how far away they may be. Regardless of your obligations, the flexibility that an online university affords has become the major attraction, regardless of some of the drawbacks that exist. The ability to study on your own time, as well as repeat classes and lectures if you need the review is an extremely attractive factor when it comes to choosing between online or on campus learning.
Add to this the innovations that are constantly developing in teaching protocols due to advancing technologies, and the attraction is clear. With fewer purchases when it comes to materials and no travel costs, students may be able to save money while earning their degree. But, and this is a big “but,” only if you have the self-discipline to maintain the continuity of a structured self-made schedule to keep yourself on track. Doing your assignments, reading the required materials, interacting with your professors and peers, and taking exams are all up to you. Additionally, if you do not trust that the courses you have chosen are indeed essential for the knowledge you need in your given field, you may drop out through lack of interest. Most campus-based universities have libraries and computer and research labs that can help keep you focused. With networking functioning as an important element in connecting for work opportunities, it is up to you to take advantage of online alternatives in order to achieve similar results.
Scheduling online appointments with your teachers is extremely important to ensure that you get the right kind of feedback on your work, as well as to prevent you from being an anonymous student instead of an avid learner who understands that personal connection is one of the best ways to move forward in a learning environment.
Even today, many online educational facilities are not accredited, which means that your degree and qualifications may not be recognized or taken seriously by professionals such as potential employers. Making sure that your capability to complete your educational tasks in a timely fashion is possible within the obligations you have elsewhere in your life is an essential ingredient that determines success or failure.
There are people, who make their own everyday ‘rituals’ – a cup of coffee in the morning, then having a lunch break, another cup of coffee in the afternoon, etc. Still, when you work with a computer, you pretty much look at the screen most of the time and therefore you do not speak to anybody. For employers, having an office is an additional expense, especially if it comes to a rented room or rooms. If you are working currently at an office, then it is recommended to do some physical activities after or before work – fitness or dancing. Freedom to schedule your personal time – now you have more time for your family, friends, hobbies and anything else, actually.
You can get distracted easily – when you work at home, you can get distracted by plenty of factors. But if most of your friends have full-time jobs, then they have less free time than you do. Some of us are early birds and would prefer to start working at 6 in the morning and some are night owls who prefer to sleep in until noon. The 600 unpaid hours that you lose while commuting to and from work – that’s $6,000 per year. Many will believe that you “’aren’t doing anything at all” so they will come over, call you all the time and sometimes even ask you to run some errands for them, since you are “home and not at work”. However working alone will motivate you to attribute more value to your evenings and week-ends. Some of my friends actually attended same online forums as I did and eventually we started meeting up for a drink or a coffee and brainstorming some business ideas. If you buy something don’t tell anyone- If you do buy a nice car, motorcycle, Expensive jacket whatever, do not leave them in plain sight as jealousy from bosses will rise quickly, this will result into a competition of who has the best of the best between the boss and the rest of the employees leaving you in confusion. This is especially true for flex arrangements, where people need to be internally and not externally motivated. Sanders suggests that when we clearly define expectations, and then trust our people to figure out the best way to do something by themselves, they are not just happier — they are motivated to work harder.
We can encourage a sense of purpose by helping our employees see the big-picture impact of what they do.

Ask yourself if your organization, and each position, have clearly defined and communicated purposes. Don’t forget about communications, as well as coaching and training for both employees and managers. Do everything you can to create an atmosphere of autonomy, mastery and purpose, and ensure coaching relationships are in place. Their productivity was still high and goals were still met, but this arrangement gave them extra time to be home. If someone is not accessible enough, he or she will get feedback from peers, and a discussion will take place to rectify the problem. We offer a secondary market for sellers who no longer wish to use their coupons and buyers who have missed a local deal sale window.
At the moment we’re in the position of saving to buy our first home so I’m not in the market for a studio away from home as it’s an outgoing that I don’t want to spend. I totally know what you mean about missing human interaction, but overall I think the good parts outweigh the bad…especially when the weather is miserable like today!
Having all of your study materials, including lectures and texts, accessible online whenever you need them is extremely handy when it comes to taking advantage of a flexible environment.
When the virtual community can come together through tools that inspire interaction, such as message boards, chats, work groups, and other innovations, there emerges a viable simulation of an on-campus experience that can be very suitable to learning and exchange. The freedom you have taking online classes can become a detriment if you are not a self-starter. As opposed to an on-campus experience where your sheer presence in a classroom filled with other students and a present professor helps to add pressure and urgency to fulfilling commitments, when you are on your own there is a greater temptation to ignore these obligations.
Taking online courses requires a certain amount of trust in the program and a steadfastness that comes with discipline and drive.
Conversely, online interaction can be equally as stimulating, but it can also make you feel like you are all alone in your coursework because of the inherent lack of physical presence. Making sure you have plenty of undisturbed quiet time in which to absorb information is key. It also means that your credits may not be transferrable to another university if you choose to pursue your education at another college. There are plenty of professions which require only time and Internet access as the place does not matter. That way, they feel like their time is well-organised which leads to effectiveness at work.
But after all, you are not alone in the room and there are other people around, which is a great plus. Not to mention the costs that may arise in the event of moving their business – end of tenancy cleaning, removal charges, etc. So, sometimes it may be difficult for you to find a company for an afternoon walk in the park or a spontaneous journey. Add fuel costs, insurance, car repair or a bus fare if you use public transit – that’s at least $7,000 per year that could be saved if you work from home.
Since you are all alone during your working hours you would be very excited to see your friends in your spare time. However, since no one is controlling your every step you can simply take a long walk around the block and I promise it will make things better.
As a creative individual unfortunately I learned the hard way- once I put all the pieces together. While big names like these make headlines by giving up on flex arrangements, we hear more and more about the demand for them.
Another cultural consideration is how engaged your employees are, and whether mastery is a valued undertaking for your staff. I think because I’ve said that to myself it’s made me resent working from home a little because I feel like it’s not a choice.
But it can also be really difficult at times too and I think it’s important to share the reality of freelancing as well as all the good stuff. For many busy people who want to move ahead in their lives, learning at your own pace, day or night, is the only way that obtaining a degree is possible.
With the freedom to take courses at your own pace comes the need for greater responsibility, requiring the proper organization that allows you to create a workable schedule that you can adhere to. If you are easily distracted, you may procrastinate, and worse, if you do not have your eye focused firmly on earning your degree, you may drop out if you don’t feel inspired.
This can become a costly mistake if you have chosen your university incorrectly, both in terms of time and money.
You can always ask somebody for assistance and vice versa – you can always help somebody who needs your help. So, if employers believe that their employees will do a quality work, complying with the deadline, then they do not need to have any physical contact with them. But if you prefer not to spend your free time in domestic cleaning, then you can always rely on the professionals and go for a workout in your local gym. Find the best time for work – you may be more productive in the mornings or even in the evenings. That is why you need a good self-discipline in order not to waste a single minute but implement your tasks in the best possible way.
It’s no wonder organizations are wondering whether these measures are right for their company.
And if employees don’t take advantage of flexible arrangements, then the program is never going to be successful. It is a choice though because even if I did have the money to spend I’m not sure if I would 100% spend it on a shared studio…The reason for this post is I thought it would be fun to start a new series on the blog documenting some of my own struggles of being a work-at-home illustrator combined with the things I love about it, tips, inspirations and ideas to make the most of it and to enjoy it. My main struggle is probably lack of human interaction so I’m always trying to think of ways to get a conversation with someone into my working day, even smiling at a stranger or saying two words really makes a difference to a day where you would otherwise not have that connection. For these people, home is a place for rest, relaxation and any other activities, but not working.
In other words: employers do not have to check constantly and follow the working process closely.
If you would like to share your own experiences, advice or suggestions for future posts please leave a comment below, I’d love to hear from you.Do you work from home, are about to quit your job to start freelancing from home or are considering your options?
Over the next few weeks I’m going to be writing about things that I do and have helped me so if this is something that interests you please stop by again!
Then I asked myself, do I really want to waste my creativity and knowledge with narrow-minded animals? Last but not least, when you have colleagues, there is always somebody to drink your cup of coffee with, spend the lunch break or even go out after your working day is finished. Who have no appreciation of what I have to offer or better yet my values as a person, This gave me a whole new perspective.
