Creating incremental backups with DropSync
When you use DropSync to back up personal documents, photos, music etc, you'll be taking advantage of the following features.
- Incremental Updating: DropSync only transfers the parts of files that have changed since the last update, so if you want to backup data regularly over the internet you'll minimise the amount of bandwidth that's needed.
- Folder-based: Since it's often not possible to backup all your data because of limited space, DropSync allows you to pick and choose individual folders
Example; backup an iPhoto library to a remote (ssh accessible) server:
- Create a directory on the backup server to hold your iPhoto backups. For example
/users/iracooke/backups
- Create a new SSH Synced Place and name it Backup Host or whatever you like
- Configure login credentials for the backup host
- Set the Synced Place root path to the backup directory created in step 1.
- Set the Local root path to the topmost directory you would like backed up on your local computer. For most people this will be their home directory
- Exit the Configure Synced Places window or click Apply to save the new synced place
- Drag and Drop your iPhoto Library directory onto DropSync
- Click the green up arrow to initiate the first sync.
- After the preview appears take note of the information it presents to check that you've got everything right
