Founded in 1986 by Jim and Janice Dougherty, Petsmart bases its dog training on scientific principles of operant conditioning, focusing on positive reinforcement methods.
Group lessons and private lessons are complemented by a personal training camp for dogs boarding at the PetsHotel. Claim to fame: With a wide range of resources and supplies as well as puppy, beginner, intermediate and advanced education, Petsmart strives to be a one-stop shop.
Fun fact: Petsmart training is built to address four periods of behavioral development in the first year of a dog's life. Instructors usually have eight students in a class, with a maximum of 10 as long as there is an assistant trainer, and use positive reinforcement and clicker training techniques. Claim to fame: Clients leave it to Wags and Wiggles to train their dogs and help their pets gain a better understanding of socialization.

Fun fact: Wags and Wiggles puts on agility demonstrations to encourage people to become involved with its training programs and, at the Rancho Santa Margarita location, it holds Client Appreciation Days, where owners and their dogs come together as a group and walk around Rancho Santa Margarita Lake. What began as a mail-order veterinary supply business in 1965 is now one of the nation's largest pet stores, and, nationwide, trains about 10,000 dogs per month. Claim to fame: Petco's training staff strives to help "pet parents" build a lifetime bond with their dogs through fun education and reward-based training. Fun fact: A half-dozen or so free 30-minute seminars cover subjects such as potty training, loose-leash walking, handling shelter dogs and doggy body language.
The training department's vast curriculum offers workshops and private and group classes on topics including beginner puppy training, obedience, agility, special therapy and "nose works," or scent tracking. An appropriate class is offered for a dog in any life stage, such as an eight-week course for a month-old puppy and a six-week class for adult dogs in need of advanced training and reliability strengthening.

All trainers must pass through three levels of the training apprenticeship, complete 300 hours of apprenticeship per level, become members of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers and pass certification tests. Puppies as young as 8 weeks can receive basic training of commands, learn the importance of socialization and, of course, have fun.
Dogs 6 months or older are welcomed to basic training workshops but can be placed in higher-level classes focused on specific topics and adult dog problem solving.
